I work for Alaska Airlines and they excepted the policy is pretty much the same as the other carriers. I personally travel quite a bit and bring a case of handguns with me 90% of the time with no issues. Most of the issues we encounter are from travelers that are relatively, new or firearm owners that don’t quite do their research. I personally keep a set of locks on me because I’ve helped out a number of travelers over the years. This is a very good post, sir.

Other points: (1) each AIRPORT may have different TSA check in procedures. At LAS (Las Vegas) airport, once you check your firearms you are required to wait nearby for 15 minutes in case TSA has any issue. If they do not come, you can leave after the 15 minutes. At MSP (Minneapolis/St. Paul), they walk you and your firearm/bag to TSA for x-ray inspection. Once inspection is completed and if no issues, you are on your way. (2) After landing, your firearm/bag will be the LAST one off the plane. It will be hand delivered to that airlines' baggage claim office where you will need to show ID to collect it. So, allow extra time before and after flying.

Yes, every airport (and every ticket agent) is different. I’ve been flying with guns for 20+ years, and it seems like each time there is something at least a little different, and sometimes significantly different, than every other time. I definitely prefer the airports where you go directly to a TSA screening point so that you are present when they screen your bag. That way you know that it has cleared and can hand them your keys directly if they want them so you don’t end up with your locks cut or your bag left behind.

Another quick tip that I have learned from flying with rifles, when you declare that you are traveling with firearms, you only want to declare how many bags, cases, or containers have the guns in them. Even if you have ten rifles in one case, you only need to declare one firearm. The airline companies only go by the amount of cases that have guns in them, unless the airline specifically says there is a limit of firearms per case. So if you have a case with two guns in it, you only declare that you have one firearm

I once flew from San Jose to Salt Lake with about 4 guns. It was bussy they had me show that my guns were unloaded at the counter so, I made a show of it. Bullets cannot be in a magazine, can be in a plastic case , like reloaders use to store bullets (what I use), locks should not be TSA approved. Case can definitely not be pried. Bullets can be in your normal checked bag. Double check airlines websites, not all allow for 11lbs. Hand guns can be in a hard case, locked in your checked bag. I travel a lot with firearms and work for an airline. Most airlines ask you to wait 20 minutes-ish before going thru security, if TSA wants to open your gun case.

If you book a one way you can check in first (online) to get your digital wallet/printable boarding pass, and then check your gun with your bags. If you book a round trip, you can do the former on the flight there, but you can't on the way back. It gives you an error message. So yeah you just can't check in digitally on the way back because they assume you're coming back with the gun and they want to look at you again before they give you a boarding pass.

I’ve found my cheaper harbor freight Apache 9800 case to be a good tsa approved case. It’s pretty rugged, comes out to about 52”, can fit a couple rifles, scopes, few mags, and ammo. Also has wheels so you don’t have to carry it and all for about $150. Using key locks instead of combination locks was good advice. If you have to open it it’s more convenient to grab a key than to try and remember a combination.

@mateobrainardo4770 Жыл бұрын
I believe that is the weight of approximately (4) -50 rnd boxes of 9mm. Of course it depends on the bullet weight, etc. They also are trying to prevent a significantly •HEAVY• end on long rifle cases. If you were to pack 22 lbs or so of 5.56 in one end of your rifle case, it could be awkward to handle/load on the aircraft. I think they’re trying to prevent working their employees too hard!
@Androctonus8410 ай бұрын
Since this video title specifically mentions Delta, viewers should be aware that at least at some airports Delta is enforcing a policy different from that listed on their website. Previously it has always been acceptable (and apparently still is with all other airlines) to use a large hard sided container, such as a Pelican case, for your luggage and simply place the gun in this along with other items (clothes, camera equipment, etc.) and lock the whole case. On Delta’s website this option is explicitly listed as allowed: “Firearms must be packed in a locked manufacturer's hard-sided container specifically designed for the firearm, a locked hard-sided gun case or a locked hard-sided piece of luggage.” However, I have seen reports from others, and also experienced myself, that for the last several months Delta has not been allowing this option. Instead, they are requiring that you use a small locked case that then is placed inside your unlocked luggage, even though their site goes on to say this: “Handguns may be packed in a locked hard-sided gun case, and then packed inside an unlocked soft-sided piece of luggage. However, a Conditional Acceptance Tag must be used in this case.” If you don’t know this before you get to the airport and try to check your locked hard sided luggage with a gun inside, but not also inside a smaller locked gun case, you will be turned away. If you can’t return to your car and leave your gun behind, and get back in time, you will miss your flight and not be eligible for any refund of your fair. While using this method to fly with firearms is legal and has been very popular with people who either transport multiple firearms, or other valuable equipment along with their firearm, for decades, and even though their own written policy still posted on their website explicitly allows it, Delta is barring this method of transport at least at several, if not all, airports.

@@WHOTEEWHO I’ve only ever had it happen once, back in July, and they didn’t say anything on my return flight, so I thought it was it was just my local airport which has some other strict gun rules as well. But since then I’ve run across three other people, each at different airports in different states, who’ve all had the same experience with Delta. It also sounds like their issue is putting guns in a case with non-gun items, such as clothes, non-gun related equipment, etc., so that might be why you were okay.

Just a tip, i've been on many flights with guns and it makes things easier if you always use TSA locks. They wont have to ask you for your key in case they must open your case. They can open any TSA lock with their special keys. You just wait until they're satisfied and they'll give you a thumbs up or thumbs down.
@yortrofacor1593 Жыл бұрын
TSA website does not recommend TSA locks. Also according to the site you should only be the one handling the keys. Never give keys to the TSA. The TSA should not also be touching or handling your firearms. You can see the actual working of the Federal Laws on the site.
