I regret to inform you that I *WAS* one of "those" people who said the only people who need a gun are law enforcement and the military. My politics have evolved in the last few years, and times are changing. A couple of weeks ago I went to buy my first gun and told them I'm a 65-year-old gun virgin and I felt like I was out looking to buy my first car but I didn't have a drivers license and had never been behind the wheel. They encouraged me to take a gun safety course, the same course that is required for a carry permit in VA, so I'm taking the course in 2 days and then I'll buy a gun. In the meantime, I'm watching as many useful videos as I can find, including this one. I'm already looking forward to lots of range time for practice.

Two days after the class, I went back and rented several guns and fired them, but I came back to the G19. The employee at the rental counter and the salesman I talked with both carry that gun. I'm planning to take another class for guidance and practice, and I submitted the Concealed Carry application to my city courthouse. I won't carry until I'm more proficient and comfortable. I have A LOT to learn, but I'm glad to be on this path. #backtheblue

@eniklisnihm45654 жыл бұрын
Ya that can happen with a AR, keep it pointed in a safe direction, also, the older ones didn't have the strong enough spring on the pin so when it slapped forward it "could go off" on releasing the bolt forward the firing pin could strike the center, happened to me while shooting down range and got a double shot with just one trigger pull! but in my case it was because the ammo didn't have enough gas to reset the sear on the trigger so it followed it back and hit the pinn again.

Four weapon safety rules: 1) Treat every weapon as if it were loaded. (Do not assume that your firearm is unloaded, and do a chamber check when receiving or passing off a weapon) 2) Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot. (Be aware of the direction of your barrel at all times, this will keep everyone around you safe) 3) Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire. (If you rest your finger on the trigger, there's a much higher chance that you'll negligently discharge your weapon) 4) Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire. (When applicable, not all weapons have a safety mechanism) Sometimes, a fifth safety rule is also referenced: 5) Know your target and what lies beyond and in-between. (Don't get tunnel vision. If you are shooting a target, is there anything behind it? Pay attention to your surroundings) The first four are generally the most accepted weapon safety rules, the fifth one is also thrown in sometimes. Generally, if an accident occurs, it's because someone broke at least two of the safety rules, if not more.

Nothing better than extreme long range 22lr shooting, long range hmr hunting and just hunting in general, from magpies or grouse all the way up to moose. Especially with the 22lr side, I finally found my purpose and something I am good at. Nothing cooler than hitting a 1.5inch plate at 300 meters a few times in a row. My husband has been shooting since he was a young kid. Then joined the army. He taught me very well how to handle a gun. But before we shot a real gun he taught me with a water gun. Trigger discipline, no flagging, keeping barrel down range. And everything. Then I upgraded to a airsoft gun. Same lessons.. I then upgraded to his 9mm pistol and then his AR-15.. now I can shoot his kar98k Mauser.. just in a short period with my husband he is surprised and says it's like I am a pro. :). I wanted to learn. Great advice. Thank you. There are two things I might add... 1. As mentioned in the video, don’t underestimate the effect that fear and stress can have on your ability to effectively defend your family and home. I was awoken late at night and confronted by a very stressful and unexpected situation. Before that night I considered myself pretty cool under pressure, so I was surprised by how quickly I was transformed into a feckless idiot. It was a nice ‘practice test’ and I got a C+ at best.. That won’t happen again. 2. Educate yourself about what happens AFTER you use a gun to protect yourself. Otherwise you’ll probably be unprepared for the shit storm that follows. It’s important to know what to do/say when the police arrive, understand potential legal impacts, community backlash, etc. There are a bunch of videos and advocacy groups that can educate you.

As someone from the UK hearing about how the grip on gun laws is strengthening in some states, I urge you all to fight for your rights. You only have to look at the hot and cold burglary statistics in the UK vs the US to see that even the idea of a house having a firearm is enough to put criminals off. When the people lose their freedom, the criminals take advantage, which can cost innocent lives due to not having a way to defend yourself. No matter what, criminals will always have guns, they have them here after all. So defend your rights!

777Dubliner couldn’t agree more! There are some things we do get right (NHS and certain components of the tax system come to mind) but a lot is simply nonsensical here! Our freedom comes after the rights of criminals, hell, people in prison here have so many rights it’s ridiculous, from TV to games even! It’s more like summer camp! Not to mention the criminals have guns, so why can’t us law abiding citizens? It pisses me off to no end. It pisses me off the most about land, it all technically is owned by a 20 something year old appointed for the queen! The U.S. has its issues as all countries do, but the freedom of the people comes first. That freedom to defend yourself, own land, own the weapons criminals are using! That is something I long for all countries to adopt. Guns will always exist, so arm the good guy, before the bad guy has his way. (As a side note for how backwards the laws are here, they’ve thought of banning kitchen knives to reduce knife crime.... they’re using knives because they’re the next best thing for attacks! To even own an air soft gun that looks real here you need a defence to say you’re an active player, otherwise it has to be brightly coloured! It’s honestly ridiculous).

While you have the book out and the gun at hand, take it apart and put it back together. Dry fire it, drop the empty mag, put it back in, take it apart again. Before you ever buy the first box of ammunition, play with it, learn where all the controls are by touch. The first time you go out to shoot is not the time to fumble around and make yourself look like an idiot. Embarrassment can completely ruin the learning process. If you didn't grow up getting your ears boxed for mishandling a gun learning the 4 Rules takes a real effort, it's worth it and could save you or someone else a serious injury. At a lot of ranges there are people around wearing bright yellow Tee-shirts that say "RSO", that means "Range Safety Officer", if he says "STOP" even if it is to the guy next to you it means STOP, he is trying to protect everyone including YOU. Don't argue, he may be trying to keep someone from getting hurt. Women make excellent shooters because they don't have the male ego involved and listen when told they are doing something wrong, swallow your pride and be receptive, there is always something new to learn, nobody lives long enough to make ALL the mistakes for themselves.

The main one, IMHO, is keep your finger off the trigger until sights are on target and you're ready to shoot. Adhere to that rule, and you'll be more likely to win the mega lotto than to have a ND, as your gun going off without your finger touching the trigger is exceptionally rare. All of my Glocks have Meprolight sights as described above and flip up sights as well on those very scary black GUNS I own! We have secure Guns within reach all throughout our home! Most are hidden in plain sight with rfid security! They are in places you would never expect! But they are easily accessible when needed! Most of our neighbors hate use because of the target practice! I went to the gun shoes in December and in January and spent almost four grand in ammunition! Plus I made a few small additions to our protection system that we needed! I have purchased several PCP air pellet guns, two tanks and I just ordered an air compressor to fill the guns bottles... several hundred more in pellets... My wife makes under $30k and I am a permanently disabled Navy Veteran living off the scraps of the Government! How can I do all of this? I did it over time and wish now I had done a lot more! I have used up almost all of the left over life insurance from my dead son to buy most of what I just said! I purchased all of this for our protection! There’s nothing I can do to bring my son back and I refuse to just throw my life away! Where would that leave his mother and older special needs brother? So don’t come here telling me you would never let it go and would find whom ever it was and do this and that! I have had to eat a lot of CROW and have had one hell of a time dealing with this! Till you have walked a few hundred feet in my shoes keep your pie hole shut!

The hospital she works at has closed several entire centers of care down OVER THIS! One big surgery center to be used for over flow emergency care! She works at a very famous hospital who has a very well known basketball team, go Blue! They have won a lot of championships! 4 letters & Your first guess doesn’t count!

The Dems are not anti-2nd amendment. This threat to the 2nd amendment is a myth created by the NRA to scare people into giving them more money. Learned gun safety when I was in the military. Every year we got a refresher course. First gun I bought was a 22LR plinker. Learned it inside and out and taught my grandson gun safety and how to shoot. Then bought a 12 gauge pump. Read the accompanying "bible". Stocked up on "food" for my firearms. Then bought a 1911A1 in 22LR. What you say? Why a 1911A1 in 22LR? It was to learn the ins and outs of the 1911A1 before I bought a 1911A1 in 45 ACP. Taught my grandson how to shoot the 22LR 1911A1 and the ins and outs. He's good. After I got my 1911A1 in 45 ACP, he already understood the safety and operations of the 1911A1. He was surprised at how loud it was even with ear plugs. Got my CCL, holster, and insurance (USCCA). Things haven't gotten bad out here in the boonies but 75 minutes away it's getting dicey. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

The same rules I've learned in my Basic Training in the German Army! Now I'm a hunter and still act the same way, my bolt action rifles are stored with open bolt in my gun safe, for may pistol and my AR, I have safety flags, I still have to buy one for my revolver. But I still check the weapons when I took them from the safe before I went to the range or hunting. I still check them when I took them out of my rifle/pistol case and also check them before I took them back into the case, and again before I store them into my gun safe. I was an eye witness when one of the guys in my Platoon accidently fires a blank cartridge AFTER safety check, the Platoon Sergeant wasn't very happy, especially after the fool told the Sergeant "it would just hit his foot" (we all stand next to each other). The Sergeant let make him about sixty press ups, before they have a little run about one mile!
@stephanl19834 жыл бұрын
One of our Instructors also showed us two holes in the road in front of our gym. The story was that two guys on guard duty where on patrol inside our garrison at night (when some Officers and NCO's give order to carry the rifle with a cartridge into the chamber), one of them accidentally manipulate the safety of his rifle with his belt, plays with the trigger😠, fires a shot into the ground, get in panic, drop the magazine for safety check, but didn't remove the cartridge from the chamber! This was the reason why many of our Officers and NCO's give order to carry the rifle unloaded on night, the other reason was when you stop a guy on night, and yell "STOP, or I will shot!", and the manipulate the charging handle, the other guy knows that you wouldn't make a joke, it's a psychological effect, like the sound when load a cartridge into the chamber of a pump shotgun!

He made sure I could remember them at least 30 minutes after he told me them and then 1 hour, and then 2, and then the next day when he was gonna bring me to the range, he made me recite those 4 rules and if I didn’t get them on the first try, I would’ve had to study them more and wait till the next day to go, and I got it perfectly. I didn’t understand why at the time but I’m glad he did that since I understand exactly why he did now.

So important! I am starting to see how uninformed I was and it has taken away so much fear. I think that’s a common thing in the country: people don’t have knowledge of firearms and or see themselves as a potential victim vs seeing firearms as a way to protect yourself. When that perspective switched for me, I now see how these gun control law/emotional stories work so well when people are in fear/uneducated. We need more education, so props to you for looking to learn!

In Poland we have a convenient abbreviation for gun safety: BLOS (I extend it to BLOSZ). B - from broń (weapon), always treat any of guns as loaded L - from lufa (barrel), never point it at something you're not willing to destroy (unless you have a will to destroy it, then have fun) O - otoczenie (surroundings), be wary of the surroundings of your target S - spust (trigger), keep the finger off it when not willing to fire Z - zabezpieczenie (safety), put it on, especially when not intending to use it in a short amount of time, when need arises or not having an overwatch over it I'm still to young to legally own a firearm out here, but no worries, I'll do my best acquiring a gun permit (because of the specifics of our law it'll be simultaneously on sports shooting and collecting, for more read a Wikipedia page about Polish laws).
