Years ago when I was a young flight instructor, a vital step on my way to eventually become an airline Captain, I had a student that I could not allow to solo after many hours of dual instruction. She simply could not fly a traffic pattern and always became disoriented on the downwind leg. I suspect that she had vision problems since she wore very thick glasses. I finally had to tell her that I could not in good conscience allow her to solo. It hurt me to have to do that because she had an abundance of determination to finally succeed. I often wonder what the end result of my actions were and if she was eventually able to solo but in my judgement, I thought it was impossible.

My instructor also has students do 2 or 3 good landings before he gets out for the solo. At first I didn't understand why, but then I realized my first landing, especially after even a small break, is usually the worst. Furthermore, he wants to check that your heads in it today. It's not a criticism of the cfi against the student it's a genuine concern for safety of the student. I wish I had understood this earlier. But that comes with time behind the yoke.

dont worry seth it took me 3 months to go solo. failed the first one and then every other attempt the weather was full blown thunderstorms, no joke. keep up the hard work and practice the flying at home and you'll be absolutely sorted. now ive gone solo with the thoughts the instructor would stop my training!

Did Seth always answer your questions or directions with "I know" ? Pretty good crosswind landings. Early in my student days I had trouble with crosswind landings because for some reason I would step on the rudder of the side to which the plane was being blown. They weren't hard inputs but I guess that's why I didn't solo until I had 19 hours. But I learned and practiced my way out of that brain fart. Good luck in you new job.

As the saying goes: "Sh..weather happens". A few weeks back I was all set for a flight on a forecast of a 'dry day' with light winds, left the ramp all looking great and had just finished my run-ups when low clouds rolled in and it started raining! It suxs, we get over it, and we live to fly another day. If there's any one thing flying training teaches you.. it's PATIENCE.

Several recent examples of student solos facing a diversion because the airport closes all runways due to an accident. They have to deal with the emotional aspects of hearing an incident and then determining where to diver to, hopefully with good weather. Good thing you set high personal minimums.

It's a RAM yoke mount for the size IPad mini I own. You can buy direct from RAM or from a pilot gear shop. I tried knee boards but didn't like any of them. I much prefer the mount.

The gear light on the left wheels did not light up so I had to ask Kissimmee tower if my gear was even down!!! Low pass at 500 and they confirmed and and I went yolo and full flaps cut power and landed from 500ft over the runway:) Kevin style! I am VERY interested in what airline you picked and think a step by step of the journey would be epic so we know what to look forward to. I was flying solo earlier today on a navigation flight. Everything went well, except one thing. The rpm would drop, or get higher, without me touching the throttle. I often had to adjust it back to ~2300rpm, because I’d find myself +- 200rpm more or less. Does anyone know what could be the cause of this? Could it be because I hadn’t ‘locked’ it with the tiny ring on the throttle? (Cessna 152)

He's a CFI. His first duty is for safety. It *might* have been fine, and if *might* have been a real problem. He made the (correct) choice to be paranoid and conservative about the weather, and not put a solo student in inappropriate weather.

Not great weather planning really, given the forecasts available these days, particularly for aerodromes. Personally I cannot get my head around the fact that Seth was deemed ready to solo and yet had zero experience landing or indeed flying the pattern for 13, Throughout pre solo training you will always have an opportunity to use all serviceable runways, weather wise, and should take full advantage of it and have the ability to utilise the options. Clearly you are going to the airlines given the A320 paper cockpit adorning the wall .

@@LewDixAviation Firstly I am no armchair pilot, I have a frozen ATPL and considerably more hours than you could amass in the next ten years added to what you have now. I listened to what you said regarding the weather and the weather moved a few hundred feet and was never going to be in your 3000 ft parameters , so like I said poor weather planning! .I worked 8 years, off and on, as a CFI and never once turned anyone solo without first making them proficient on all available runways, why,, because it is the most sensible thing to do as it prepares them for another variable that could raise its head .I had no idea that constructive criticism would ruffle your feathers so, not the best of attributes for a fledgling airline pilot!.

@@wayneelliott2462 No feathers ruffled at all on my end. All I did was give you a bit of pushback on your claims. The world nowadays doesn’t allow for disagreements for someone getting upset that you answer back. Take it as you dish it mate. It’s comments like yours that are why there are disclaimers in my videos. I’ve been doing this a long time too and always been successful with soloing and getting students through their training. You don’t know the ins and outs of the procedures at the airports we fly in and out of. You don’t know about runway closures and NOTAM’s at these airports on the particular days we fly. You don’t know why this particular airport very rarely uses the other runway, and certainly haven’t seen my students logbook which shows all the training we have done to satisfy not only the FAA requirements, but my higher minimums. Your claim about not preparing the student is completely baseless when clearly in the video we just accepted a landing on the other runway in order to TRAIN ON IT. So yea, I gave you some push back, to which in childish fashion you’ve tried to make it a competition about how many hours you have. Nobody asked haha. But as long as we are going there: my ATP isn’t frozen, and I have two type ratings with a third one on the way. Done the airline thing, went away for a while and now going back. All you’ve done here is just make yourself look very silly.
