All children with physical or mental problems touch us in a special way. Peter is so easy to love and pray for. Our Eternal Father gave Petie such an engaging personality, together with a smile that lights up his face and all those lucky enough to hold him close. Thank you for sharing him and the rest of your family with us.... even Pete's very smart puppy.❤❤

My son was in a custom wheelchair up until he was 11 yrs old due to health issues which drained his energy. We traveled to Sweden, Barbados and Florida with him and his wheelchair. For all flights we contacted the airline ahead of time to actually "reserve" the onboard space for his wheelchair as well as get a liaison assigned to him. They contacted us a few times and arranged for someone to bring us through the security and customs. One important thing to note is to make sure if they are not boarding from a ramp but from the tarmack, that they arrange for a lift ahead of time otherwise it's only stairs up to the plane. Also, the opening to the luggage storage under the plane carries, make sure to find out the size of the opening for your particular plane to ensure your wheelchair will fit without removing head rest etc. if it needs to be stored under the plane

I travel solo most of the time. I have a rigged frame chair with quick release rims. Tips: 1. attach a baggage id tag to the body axle tube and one to each of the wheels with instructions that, if a wheel pops off during flight, carry it with you when you bring me the chair and I will put it back on before I sit down. 2.I always take my chair to the gate. I fold down the back myself because I don't want anyone attempting to do so without supervision. 3. During flight transfers I insist my chair meets me at the gate for the layover. Then I am certain the chair and I both made it on the connecting flight. 4. I never check luggage because it can be a nightmare to pick up luggage from a carrousel. I pack a backpack that drapes over each side of the chair's back and hangs in the middle. The strap is sandwiched between my shoulders and the chair back so it would be impossible for a thief to steal it without causing a big commotion.

Worse case scenario is the TSA claims they did a random search and they had to dismantle or break pieces to look inside any hollow spaces. They leave a disclaimer card expressing their apologies and claim they are not responsible for any damage that occurred while they were trying to inspect it.I was livid. There were parts and screws missing. Because it was imperative that they gain access to these areas they are not responsible for damages that occurred.😮

Actually it should be obvious that people like Peter are treated with care anywhere, as well as their aiding devices (like a wheel chair), without extended preparations of the care taker. Just naming the wheel chair must be enough. I use a mobility scooter myself and my experience is that some companies lack the obvious, often simple measures to make things easier, saving effort and time. I am happy to hear though that your findings with Delta were great. I like your kid and his wonderful smile, and your lovely loving family. Sweet regards from Deventer, The Netherlands.

- Check with the fine print on the airline. Their "we break it, we pay it" isn't enough to cover most chairs. Especially not power chairs. - Make a laminated sheet on why NOT to remove batteries from power chairs. Gel batteries do not need to be removed since they do not leak. But some airline cargo guys will still remove them. - Anything that can come off with a lever being moved or whatever, take it off. - If a power chair, do a laminated instruction sheet on how to disengage/re-engage motor so it can be pushed vs driven. - Find out how much the powerchair weighs because they will ask - As for TSA checks, it is up to you if you want to hobble through the screening process to have chair checked separately to avoid the embarrassing hand check of your body in a public place. I stopped the hobbling because there usually was not a chair for me to sit in while I waited. - Before going through checkpoint, remove EVERYTHING from chair that isn't the chair itself. Bags, holders, etc. These should be removed at home anyway and put in the luggage. If the cushion has a bag attached to it, do not hide it. My Supracor had a small pocket on the front and I tucked it under once. No, sir, there's not a bomb in there. - There is a chair called an "aisle" chair that can be used to wheel you from airplane door to your seat. Frankly, unless you are Twiggy, it will be uncomfortable. Luckily I can walk a short distance and choose to stumble my way there. It is one of the reasons I usually fly 1st class if I can afford it or bulkhead row if I cannot. - Don't put too many instruction sheets on the chair. Most of the time they ignore them anyway. Not their fault, they are on a timeline and aren't given much leeway to deal with it. My chair usually delays the flight since it is powered and big. I'm sure there's more.
