Its wild that it took apple this long to get to where Android and/or Samsung is, but this is still informative. Im only consider and iPad due tk me wanting to get into aviation. Hopefully becoming an airline pilot

Have my Private SEL and Instrument, but the technology is so incredible now, it makes getting back in the left seat very appealing as I'm very technically oriented. Any basic applicant you have to have is Pro plus member and by the way the text IFR filing is only available in 75 largest airports is not bad enough the airport fee is very expensive

Many many thanks for this presentation ... very helpful, indeed! RMK: I am using SkyDemon - flawlessly - on an iPad 5th Gen (2017) with 128 GB Memory. With a whole bunch of national maps (Europe) loaded, I use only around 28 GB of the Memory. Same goes for my "old" (2014) iPad Air 2 that serves as my backup machine. Nevertheless ... the more memory the better. and it seems there is nothing in between 32 GB and 128 GB.

Since the FCC requires cell service to be turned off while in-flight it doesn't seem readily apparent that a GPS signal source, such as an ADS-B with GPS receiver, is needed to have the moving map and other handy in-flight features... otherwise while in-flight the iPAD / EFB application combination is more like a smart e-book without the moving map and the other nice to have in-flight features. It seems like there should be more information & emphasis readily shared and available about this. thanks for sharing

Just to clarify, when you turn Airplane Mode on (cellular service off), the internal GPS still works - assuming you have one. Of course if it's a WiFi-only iPad you definitely need a remote GPS source like an ADS-B receiver.

No, your Ipad won't get traffic unless you have an external ADS-B receiver.

This is my two cents on figuring out if using an Ipad mini is useful for me. It updates Sectional Charts automatically. That is say $24 per year, Airport Directories run about $35 You get all sorts of other info depending on what plan you purchase. Basic is like $100. So far I can see the usefulness and not be carrying all sorts of books, Sectionals, Airport Directories. Its all in one place and access to real time weather, etc. Also, if the Ipad does go blank your phone can be the back up. So far its half of the subscription for basic. I do not need it but, it seems it will make life a bit easier having it on board. Hope someone one can add more to this or give pros and cons besides my point of view.

A cheaper tablet with android and AVARE app seems to be more than enough for only VFR recreational pilots as myself. AVARE is free and essentially the same. I don't need to invest $1000 (ipad + Foreflight) to get a burger 100 miles away once a month.

To use Pre Departure Clearance you need to enroll (or activate) the function in ForeFlight for the N-Number (or aircraft registration number) of that particular airplane.

The best setup is a mid-sized iPad with an x-naught cooling platform and a portable charger. Pick any poison for your software. If running a Garmin panel and plates buying a bundle gets you free Garmin Pilot. Get a Bose Bluetooth headset which you link to your cell phone so you can make weather calls instead of tuning for them on the radio.

Yes, but make sure it's an iPad mini 5 or newer. The iPad mini 4 is pretty slow these days.

flexairz But you didn’t answer the question with your snarky response, If IT’s on the MFD (which means it is in the plane already) why would you use on an IPAD? If not in the plane you are flying then use your IPad

Actually, a great deal of benefit. I use the mini in a yoke mount, so it does not take up much room. The points are: 1. It is portable, so I use it for flight planning at home, then just plug it into the airplane and go. 2. It is the backup. I use a USB plug in the aircraft, and it would last about an hour if the electrical system went out. 3. I typically put the plate on it for the approach I am flying. I have a G500 txi display, which will georeference the plate on the display, but I like having the plate on the Ipad as well, in normal portrait mode. The mini is about the size of a plate, and I can review the profile, missed aproach instructions, etc. 4. Profile view. The Garmin display does not do profile. You can get terrain warning colors on the route, but getting the profile view with Foreflight is much more explicit for route planning. 5. Glide range. Foreflight will show a circle for glide range on power out that is adjusted for terrain and wind. Garmin SHOULD do this but does not (PS it's depressing how small the glidepath range is). 6. Weather. Foreflight does a better job of presenting weather data, and it comes from the cell network (internet). The only drawback is it is hard to set up, you have to use a cellphone to get data in midair, because the cell connection in the ipad is old tech (not V4). I have received real time weather over the Sierras here in California this way. There are others, but those are the main points.
