Interesting: Flying a drone, you are limited to Line of Sight. So in the daytime, any more than about 1/2 a mile or so (sometimes much less than that), you cannot see the drone (unless you have a visual observer out there somewhere). But with a strobe on at night you can see the strobe three miles away and you are then legal VLOS.

Hello everyone. I am newish over tbe last month flying a cheap drone...I don't have my part 107 but I do have a strobe that can be seen for 5 miles...Can I fly at night 400 feet uncontrolled airspace? There is so much info everywhere, but I want to stay legal.. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS CORRECT 😞 I want to film Christmas lights TONIGHT for a special Christmas party my sister is having. I took my DJI Mavic 3 Cine out tonight and the altitude was capped at a few meters. Are some areas capped by the software?
@uavcoach Жыл бұрын
From my experience, sometimes my altitude will be capped for 20-30 seconds as it tries to update the home point. This happens both at night and during the daytime. I usually just wait it out, so maybe try that. But let me know if it looks like a different problem. Sometimes it can be difficult for the drone because at night, most of its sensors are turned off or don't work, so it might take some time for it to register the area around it.
@otszzz79 Жыл бұрын
Had that earlier in the daytime. I tought it was because the gps was lagging. As soon the gps activated and saved homepoint, I was good to go

What's your opinion on the best color of light that can be seen at the greatest distance away? Does the FAA have a placement recommendation for the night flight lights? Thanks in advance for your time and reply.
@uavcoach3 ай бұрын
The best color of light for a drone flying at night is typically white or red. And the FAA does not specify a specific placement, but most recommend placing the light on the top of the drone to ensure maximum visibility from all angles

New pilots, remember to keep up to date with rules. This video was only posted 10 days before my comment. Rules could have easily changed in that much time. The fact that the being posted 10 days before “ my comment “ would be better phrased, “‘ sorry I made a mistake. “ The integrity meter just went down !

For flying over a street with traffic or any moving vehicles, pilots operating under Part 107 might need a waiver for that exact scenario, so hopefully the pilot was following the FAA's guidelines. You can read more about it here: www.faa.gov/uas/commercial_operators/part_107_waivers

The whole strobe light thing is a joke… Anyone flying around at 400 ft won’t even see it, until it hits it.
@fortyfour6626 Жыл бұрын
I don’t agree. I have strobes that can be seen for 5 miles. I took a few videos of them. Having said that, the law is written stupid anyway and is up for interpretation….there is no “standard” for brightness of luminosity. They say “can be seen for 3 miles”. Everyone’s vision is different and to me it’s too subjecting. The “strobe” part is also written loosely. My question is what should the timing be exactly? I’ve seen planes with strobes that are more of a blink. What defines a strobe? What pace? I put a firehouse arc V on top for all my night flights that is 1100 lumen which can be seen for miles. Again, the law is so loose. Thing is that after dark around here, nothing is flying at 350-400 anyway. Nothing. If a 767 into Tampa is anywhere near under even 1500….my drone is the least of their worries. I keep flightradar on and always decend even when I have no good reason. Just some thoughts on it. I have a couple videos of my strobes I left public if you want to see what I’m referring to.
