Skipping gears is not bad for your transmission. Just be mindful of what your rpms will be in whichever gear you’re selecting. If you’re worried about your synchros doing that, just double clutch it, but its pretty overkill

Skipping gears is called 'Block Changing' in the UK, and it is standard procedure on both the learner and advanced tests. As long as the selected gear is suitable for the road speed and the gradient, you can skip any number of them when going up or down the box. In fact, using unnecessary gears could potentially be a fail, especially in ADI2 and the Cardington Special tests (Approved Driving Instructor part Two and the Cardington Special are the two highest level advanced tests in the country, and only available to trainee and qualified driving instructors). Older vehicles require different techniques, and block changes may not be suitable for them.

@@KevinMsyah depends on the drivetrain. If you have fwd and the engine is in front you may find it beneficial to start in 2nd for better traction. Honestly I've never ever been in that situation where I'm stuck in sand to have tried it. If you have rwd and the engine is in the front or middle (basically not a Porsche) then you will need something or maybe someone 😅 heavy to sit on top of the tyres to aid traction. These are just things I know when it snows in UK and EVERYTHING stops.

I'm a veteran pro driver, and I have to say that most of the stuff you said here was bang on. I drive manual transmission cars only. I refuse to own automatics, because I enjoy driving, and don't want to be bored. I noticed that you pause a bit in your 1st to 2nd shift which is good, and will save your synchro into 2nd, and also your clutch. My 6 speed has a huge jump into 2nd, so I pause a lot more into second. I would like to see a bit more rev matching, but your driving is better than average. I have never destroyed a manual transmission, and have gotten 15 years out of a clutch. Rev matching pays off! I do drive my 6 speed around town in 6th gear. It does not have very tall gearing, and I wish it was close ratio for faster shifts. Happy motoring!

izdabombz that’s what I thought too, in fact quite the contrast manual is quite rugged compared to auto when you are doing the exact same thing, as long as you have an idea of how manual transmission works it is really hard to make it dysfunctional. I have been launching my car every single day and extreme hill start for over two years now and the car I got had already had 110000 miles when I first had it and the clutch and gearbox are still original to this very day. I think the only thing that can quickly kill it is to let someone who thinks they know what they are doing but haven’t even seen how a burnt clutch looks like to drive your car. I have seen so many blued flywheels and clutches with one side of the facing completely gone, and you can instantly tell how knowledgeable they are about cars.

Can these cars take it? Sure they can, but you will pay for the stupidity later either in replacing clutches or rebuilding transmissions. He said so at the end of the video, and he's right. This is stuff we old farts learned from our parents who taught us to drive on sticks, reinforced by having to work after school to pay any repairs caused by carelessness. It's not intuitive to younger folks who learned to drive automatics, or worse, CVTs. Going to teach my son to drive on a stick, and this will be on his required watching list.

FYI, for #3, the CTR leverages a cable actuated/remote gear shift. Resting the hand on the shifter will not strain the shift collar the same way as trans-mount shifters in RWD, or rod-style shifters like the one in your Prelude. You'd have to pull/push the shifter fairly hard in the CTR to cause any real strain. #themoreyouknow

1st gear doesn’t like being forced into, wait for the car to stop moving, I saw a few times you were fighting to get it into 1st. When you do manage to get first gear with 5mph etc. You can over compensate the work needed to move the car off- spinning the clutch, this will wear the clutch down a bit and the synchro’s are fighting a big speed difference. 1st gear is only for getting the car into motion, so if you are moving you should be using 2nd gear to take off from 5mph or go to a dead stop.

Synchronized transmissions exist, if you're moving slowly and you are in 2nd and that 2nd gear can barely keep up at 1k rpm and the car starts to shake a bit, that's when you can shift into 1st gear. Old cars dont have synchronised transmissions and you needed to fully stop to even go into first. But it doesnt hurt the transmission if you shift down from 2nd to 1st to try and get an acceleration going. Only if you overdo it or do it on a daily basis

@@tankerd1847 Or your engine, as it lugs and shakes itself to a slow death. NOT good. Just stop, and engage 1st as Steve Pasta Boy advises. It's inconvenient but it's the least damaging method. If rolling above 10 mph, you might be fine staying in 2nd gear, but that too depends on the load you are carrying and/or pulling. To many people, manual transmissions suck for these reasons (even with modern advancements, like synchronizers), but these are also the attributes that make a driving "enthusiast" a true enthusiast. It takes effort, patience, and skill. It's a challenge that is very rewarding when executed correctly. Those who haven't driven manuals will never understand.

And if you're doing it right, you'll learn not only your powerband, but the shift points for each gear ratio (hint; it's not just before redline. 5:50 Any H-patter manual transmission is designed to let you decide whichever gear you want it to be in. It's ok to "skip shift" but you want to make sure the engine meets the trans speed before releasing the clutch. Every time I do this I double-clutch, it does make it a little smoother. The only transmissions that are not deigned to skip gears are sequential transmissions, however their shifter design in sequential trans removes the option anyways.

You can skip shift just fine even while at high speed. The key is to not accelerate or give it too much gas after you're into the next gear. For example in 4th gear going at 60mph, you can safely skip to 6th gear as long as once you get into 6th gear, you let the clutch out slower and you don't slam on the gas pedal right after.

12:28 Rev matching ONLY helps out your synchros **if** you double clutch. Otherwise, rev matching only helps to avoid upsetting vehicle stability. The reason is, since you are clutched in when you shift anyway, the engine speed doesn't affect the synchros' job. What does affect it is how fast the input shaft is spinning. So if you want to down shift, the goal is to speed up the input shaft to simulate an "up shift". So you go to nurtural, let out the clutch, blip the engine (speeding up the input shaft), clutch in again, finish shifting, let out of the clutch a second time.

You forgot to mention, do not ride your clutch under any circumstance and avoid starting off in 2nd gear. Always start from a stop in 1st. Also a good tip for hillstarts other than riding your clutch, using the handbrake or utilising the hills top feature if equipped, is to blip the throttle, using the heel toe technique before releasing the clutch. The extra revs prevent the car from rolling back. Especially useful for heavy loaded trucks!! Good video! Also check engineering explained on his video about this!!

By riding your clutch, are you meaning constantly switching gears when you are coming to a complete stop? Sometimes the short stopping distance can become very difficult to downshift between each gear say starting from 5th and going down all the way to 1st. Is it best for a novice to put it in neutral if you know you're coming to a complete stop? If that made much sense. The last thing I want to do mess up the clutch since this is my first standard.

Last question because and I know this didn't pertain to this video, but have been hearing many different opinions on the subject. Is it bad to leave your car in neutral if the parking break is on? I've been told to leave it in first gear or in reverse. Does it really make any difference on what gear i have it in as long as I have the parking brake on?

I just got my first manual car a 2011 scion tc, and came across this vid, thats aweome your from PA, as am I. I started learning manual for the first time ever just 6 days ago and im already driving it everywhere from around town all the up to 40 mins away so far with only stalling a few times. Take advantage of DFCO (deceleration fuel cut-off). While in gear off the throttle above a certain rpm the ECU will cut off fuel, meaning you'll actually save gas while making the most of the decel benefits over neutral coasting. Basically, if you can rev match ok there is literally no downsides to keeping it in gear before coming to a stop (just don't stall it I guess?)

Ok, mostly good tips to know about. My first manual was a 1985 prelude I bought new. I owned 7 manuals plus a motorcycle total. Currently in a golf R. Took most of them over 100k Only replaced two clutches, 85 prelude at 115k, 98 accord coupe at 225k. Perhaps you should order the list from worst to good habit but doesn't really matter. I'll take shot, dont launch, dont slam, dont down shift without rev match (heel toe technique honorable mention here), don't skip shift without rev match, don't hold clutch when coasting, don't maintain hill hold with clutch, dont wait in first gear while stopped (MSF will beg to differ for the sake of safety, not to mention the impatient guy behind you). Good habit but doesn't really matter, dont rest foot on clutch pedal, dont rest hand on shift knob. Added one but probably missed a couple.

Thanks for the tips man! I can't believe how easy the Type R actually is to drive for me now with less than a week on it. Pro tip for anyone else with the Type R who is getting confused by the rev matching system like I was: if you touch the throttle pedal even a little this will override the system and it won't rev match. I've got a habit of resting my foot softly on the throttle and it was overriding rev matching on some of my downshifts. It also doesn't seem to rev match into first if you try to do that for some reason like I did one time when I was parking.

Rev matching also doesnt always work on comfort and sport. Example: works only if u downshift from 5 to 3 or 4 to 2 or 3 to 1. +R mode works whenever u down shift. So 5 to 4 or 4 to 3 or 4 to 2 whatever and it will rev match. Thats what I noticed

So he didn't really explane down shifting and rev matching very well. So when you are down shifting from say, 4th to 3rd, put the clutch in, then while the clutch is pressed in, blip the throttle to bring the rpms up to the desired rpm. Once you blip the throttle and the rpms jump up, change gears and release the clutch. This should all happen in the space of 1 to two seconds. It'll take time to master but once you get it, it's like muscle memory. You don't even have to think about it anymore.

A good rule to follow either the pedel is at the floor or its not pressed at all. When u really get good at driving and double clutching the pedel being in between is merely a fraction of a second.

I been driving stick for the last 17 years and I didn't even know about rev matching until about 4 years ago. I used to just lower the speed of my car until I knew the car wouldn't shunt when I downshifted. Today I definitely incorporated rev matching when I down shift! Also I remember the first year or 2 when driving stick I would also coast in neutral. It doesn't hurt the car but it's probably not the safest thing to have the engine and transmission disconnected while the car is moving. Also engine braking is great especially if you know you're coming to a stop. All good points in this video! 👍

Granted it's a few years later, but in most new manuals there is an upshift suggestion indicator for gas mileage--not only does it recommend gear skipping (at 2500rpm mine is telling me to shift from 3rd to 6th) but the result, of course, is engine lugging. I ignore it. But this clearly indicates that they're engineering the cars to tolerate skipping and lugging.

I have been driving a manual trans for a very long time through a few different cars and have always skipped gears especially when coming to a stop. I have put from brand new almost 100k miles on my car I still own and always will go from either 4th or 5th to 1st or 2nd when stopping. Rarely if ever do I go through all the gears when coming to a stop. Im still on my stock oem clutch and have put another 50hp into the engine and used to drag race 1/4 mile and it still works like new, perfectly as a matter of fact. If your new to manual don't be scared only thing to actually make your car last longer is to take care of it and not beat on it. If you are religious about changing your oil and any other fluid that needs it at the time it needs it or before, your car will last as long as it can... Some cars are just not designed very well and will need certain items replaced sooner then others, just do the reasurch on the cars problems before you buy it and you'll know what to expect. Manual transmission is by far the best way to drive a car, makes you in control of the car much more and keeps you focused on the road and by far the most important is much more enjoyable life is short enjoy it while your here.

Just an addon to what gato said about skipshifting. If you can revmatch (Bring the RPM up while the clutch is ingaged) when shifting down, or waiting for the RPM to drop then that will not damage the syncros as much. Still not a good idea when going fast but it does help your car stay healthy :)

Rev-matching really smoothly can be quite challenging. It isn't as simple as blipping the gas and releasing the clutch. It requires you to know your car's gear ratios and use the tachometer so you can blip just above the target engine speed then release the clutch. The amount of blipping depends on what gear you're in and the speed you're traveling so there's a lot of variation that takes time to learn and practice. Still, even if you don't do it perfectly everytime (and you won't), it's still better than downshifting without blipping the gas. Some cars come with auto-rev matching features that will raise engine speed to the right RPM for you but in my experience, those systems are reactionary and cannot replace the anticipation of a well trained human. I have a Corolla with iMT mode and while it works well, I never use it because I can rev match faster because I can blip the throttle (sometimes to the floor) up to the RPM I need before I release the clutch whereas with iMT mode, I have to release the clutch slowly every time so that the engine can rev up to where it needs to be but it does not do this quickly. As a result, my own shifts are much faster and if I can do it right, they are just as smooth and I feel like a total GOD everytime I pull it off. It is such a simple thing but I find it extremely satisfying.

I think of myself as a very pro driver but i cant figure one thing out, and that of all things is upshift, like im doing food delivery for 3 or so years now as student job i have thousands of hours driving in these years, but cant figure out what is the best way to do it fast but not damage anything. I was driving my friends audi disel this summer with other guy in the car not the owner and he told me i shift too slow cause the car bounced a bit forward when i upshifted and didnt rev match on the upshift. So now i kinda started slamming gears in my petrol engine and i heard that is also bad, heard you should kinda leave the trans in neutral for a moment before doing to upper gear and i just cant figure out the right way, if you could give any advice that would be great. Also i like to street race from red light, so thats mostly slamming gears, what would be the best way to lunch it. I dont get the revs up when lunching i kinda roll off normally but then slam the gas and the gears..

@@carharttblade Based off what you have said, if the car is lurching forward on an upshift it means your engine speed is faster than the speed of the wheels. It means you need to pause on the clutch bite point a bit more and/or wait for the revs to drop a bit more before fully engaging the clutch. Shifting faster will make the lurch worse and will lead to "chirping" your tires as your engine will briefly overpower tire friction. Of course, if you are looking to accelerate and quickly as possible, this is necessary but you will heat up your clutch more as it will have to do more work to match revs. This will decrease its life. You have to drive much more conservatively to have a clutch last a long time. Street racing is not really something good drivers should practice and if you do I wouldn't be admitting to behaviour that can get your license suspended on the internet. Lol I also would advise working on this slowly and working on smoothness. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Badly matched shifts at speed can break traction in a way you don't want and lead to possibly losing control. Also don't "slam" your gears too hard because the synchros in your transmission will wear out than then you will need to double clutch and drive your car like a truck. You think you shifting is too slow now, just you wait until a synchro goes bad. Hahaha... Good luck with your practice.

Thanks for the video. I’ve been driving manual since I was 15 as well and that was in the early 80s. All of my cars have been stick. I even drove 2 hours one time to get the model of car I wanted in manual. I remember riding the clutch at stops was a big no no and I think DMV back then told you to do it for safety reasons. One rule I didn’t follow. I will be teaching my daughter to drive manual this summer and I will use this video as a good tip reference.

@@rioneely2463 It can be a bit tricky. First, gear in Neutral, Hand Brake (E brake) on and holding car in place without using pedal brake. Push in clutch and put into 1st while still holding in clutch. Rev to at least 3000rpm (will differ as you get better, grade of hill and engine) Slowly let out clutch, until you feel/see the revs go down, then as you release the hand brake, push on the gas a bit more until hand brake is all the way off and clutch is all the way out. It's a bit of a balancing act.

Is it more beneficial to downshift to a stop? I always rode it in neutral, foot off the clutch, to a stop. I figured it’s more wear to the power train to down shift and brakes truthfully aren’t very difficult to swap pads/rotors, at least compared to any components that would wear out quicker in your motor. A very good and very comprehensive list, almost perfect. I'd disagree a little-bit with 2 parts only. The part "...as you're coasting to a stop..." it's not only a kind recommendation to leave it in gear, but you have to leave it in gear, never put it in neutral or push out the clutch. Especially on downhill. You were not wrong but maybe not strict enough because you have very polite personality. You lost a lot of control when you are rolling free in neutral, simply it's dangerous. The other part is the rev matching. That is necessary with sporty cars and sporty drivers only, your gramma doesn't need to do that. But as you mentioned the modern sport cars utilize the auto rev matching already, you can switch it on/off. It's worth mentioning that Civic Type R you drive has the best manual transmission in the world. A perfect car to demonstrate.

This Video is going to save people some cash. Totally agree with all your points, but for skipping gear and rev matching, need to tweak those two rules IF your trying to conserve.I'd skip into highest gear for cruising, wear and tear in this situation isn't enough to offset rewards. Given, Lower gears are working a lot harder then higher ones, giving 5th and 6th some work has little negative in long run (mindful synchronizer need extra time because of skip). Also, because of Rev hang, while trying to coast in gear, computer tends to dump too much fuel in low rpm downshifts. It's a lot easier to maximize on engine deactivation if don't rev match (which isn't too bad since rpm is low)

I disagree on skipping gears just wait an extra second before putting it in gear I have a 2016 Camaro and I always get up to speed put it int sixth gear 4 years later still drives like when I got it day 1. Some of these are just being nitpicky. Some are really good like resting your foot on the clutch and resting your hand on the shifter. Anyone thinking about getting a manual you wont break your transmission manual transmission are probably more durable than automatics there's less moving parts and if you take care of it you will have it for 10 plus years.

You can most definitely skip gears especially if you rev match. That’s what synchros are designed to do. But if you don’t want to wear the synchros then you can double clutch to any gear you want as long as it’ll be within your rpm band.

It's actually illegal in some places to be rolling on a public road with the car NOT in gear. Meaning if you see a stop sign and you are slowing down you need to stay in gear until you have come to a stop and then you take it out and ideally put it in first and hold the clutch until you are ready to move again but you should never be rolling down the road and just coasting with the engine idling.

Might you explain why holding your clutch in at a stop is necessary? We aren't talking about motorcycles. Disengaging it is not any less of a safety issue that I can see. It could be just as dangerous for the motorcyclist in front of me if I accidentally let my clutch out and I lurch forward, knocking him off his or her bike. I say, keep it in neutral and save your throwout bearing while you're at it. It's quick and easy to engage 1st gear in the even you must move quickly.

If you want your car to be fast or win a race then you should do everything opposite to what you recommend. If you want to drive "like a grandma" and keep your car forever then sure these advices are great. I've had a honda civic type R which was bough new in 2004. I drove it like a madman. Tried launching it at maximum allowed idle RPM (about 6000rpm) I later found out that it best launched at about 3k rpm. Was skip shifting occasionally, was keeping my hand on the gear almost all the time, was leaving my gear at 2 when the car was stationary or at 1 before the traffic lights to launch faster. And of course was slamming gears extremely fast very often. People who drove with me couldn't believe how fast that was. I wasn't flooring the clutch pedal doing that, only pressing it about a third of the way or less. One of my racer friends also told me that it's possible to shift without actually pressing the clutch if you do it fast enough. I kept to my "third of the way" method. So I sold my car after 3 years and never had any problem with it except for 2 of my car speakers failed and stopped working: front left and rear right. And one of the headlights also stopped working after about 1 year so nothing major. I could beat a Golf GTI various generations, golf R32, BMW 330 E46 and even older BMW 540 e34 easily. My car was always kept stock. I bought a use BMW 540 E39 after my civic and it wasn't as sporty for sure. It had about 150K km on the dash. I was abusing it as well doing basically everything mentioned above and I had to replace my clutch at about 175k km and an engine chain shortly after (which supposedly lasts forever). But you never know how the car was driven before. I've never had a manual car since then. Sold my 540i in 2012. So as a conclusion your advices are great for the car longevity but they will also make your car slowest possible. I guess everyone should choose the driving style depending on own preference. I still gave this video a like.

I skip gears from 6th to 4th when I hit a red light or things are going to obviously slow down. I rev match, so that shouldn't actually be a problem, and it's one less clutch engagement when you consider wear. I would never wait the whole time at the light with the clutch in cause, well i'm too lazy for that anyway. lol

I’ve been driving manual transmission on my own since I was 10. My dad would let me sit in his lap and steer the car when I was maybe 4 or 5. Possibly younger. I’m 36 now and still drive a manual transmission car. I live out in the sticks. That is why that was possible to start so young for me. Recently purchased a small car to reduce fuel consumption/cost during my commute. Part of my job requires driving through the Appalachians with some steep gradients. I started on a pos super high mile wrx when I turned 16 and tbh it was reliable due to the fact that I was able to be able to feel what it liked and didn’t like, realistically that’s all you need to do, riding the clutch on downshifts feels wrong, don’t do it, lugging the engine especially on turbocharged cars feels wrong, skipping gears feels wrong if you don’t double clutch or allow the rpm’s to drop to the correct moment, for the most part everything in the video is accurate, but trust me, just feel the car, just feel what it likes and doesn’t like and what upsets it, these skills can keep even a notoriously unreliable car, reliable. have owned wrx’s almost exclusively for close to 10 years now and almost no issues. This video is a good video, very true. Yes don’t launch either, blow axle, blow diff, blow trans, clutch. Any of which💀not worth it, do a one foot roll out at least

@@scorpionwins6378 it doesn't, as long as you don't try to engage the reverse while you're still rolling :) In the popular mind that famed manoeuver probably comes from the movie "The Road Warrior", when Mad Max stops his interceptor by *apparently* engaging the reverse while braking and then accelerating in reverse, making the rear wheels spin backwards (producing a lot of smoke in the process). But actually if you look close up and in slow motion, that's just his Falcon having a real bad case of axle-hopping... :)

You said no skip shifting, but you CAN skip shift AND be easy on your synchros, saving the in between synchros and shifting faster by utilizing a double clutch. Press the clutch in (or don’t if your car can take it), slide the gear shifter into neutral, then rev up/rev down until the RPMS are similar to where they need to be, then press the clutch in and slide it into gear nice and easy.

My first driving test, I was docked a point for resting in neutral at a red light. They said I should always be in gear in case of emergency. I know that's stupid cause there were cars all around us and we weren't going anywhere. But whatever, I passed the test fine.
