Lee Mason was also on VAR duty in another Arsenal match against Manchester United and he disallowed Martinelli's goal (at that point of the game it would give Arsenal a 1 goal lead) which PGMOL later admitted was a mistake.

Fouls are subjective yea, so it’s always hard to say as a fan whether or not something was truly the wrong call. But when the officials come out and apologize for making the wrong call, ima tend to believe that it shouldn’t have been a foul.
@justdavelewis
@justdavelewis Жыл бұрын
@@aaronwilliams9211 It wasn't that it wasn't a foul, per se. It was they felt like it wasnt enough of a foul to warrant pulling it back and rule out the goal. It was still 100% a foul. It just wasn't 'clear and obvious' in the eyes of PGMOL. I disagree personally, I think that's a pretty obvious mistake once it's reviewed, Odegaard booted eriksen in the leg and pushed him over, didn't touch the ball at all, so the fact they came out and said the goal should have stood still feels wrong, but they make the rules. I think it's just because they want the threshold for intervention to be lower, which I get, but I think the real issue is a lack of context from people who played the sport. Can have as much VAR as you like, as long as the people behind it are trying to stick to the rules as much as they can and not allow for sporting context then it will forever be a mess. Bruno goal vs City, for example. In the eyes of the law, Rashford did nothing wrong. Interfering with play is clearly defined and rashford didn't meet any of those criteria. Should the goal have stood? Almost certainly not, but it legally was a goal. Another issue is cameras. Why do we as fans get access to angles that the refs don't? Its just a mess. They either need to get rid of it entirely, or get their act together. VAR was supposed to stop this but its just shifted the goalposts

Difficult for me to decide which one is the worst decision of the season (so far). From an unbiased POV it's not how badly VAR have mucked up but what precedent it sets. For example when Cristian Romero pulled Cucurella's hair in the 2-2 Chelsea Spurs draw it wasn't given as a foul which sets a dangerous precedent. Especially with Soucek's save against Gallagher it sets the precedent of you can get away with handballing and potentially saving your team a point or two if you make it look like your hand was breaking your fall even if might not have been. It's the precedent it sets that makes making the right VAR call so important imo.

In the Netherlands for a while we had post-match interviews with the referees, which was absolutely brilliant cause we could hear their reasoning for debatable decisions and often it made a lot of sense, and at times they also admitted that they or the VAR got it wrong. The transparancy was very nice to see and created some goodwill when a bad decision was made. Unfortunately, the spineless shits decided to stop those intereviews because they felt the questions asked were often 'too negative', like lads the only reason those interviews were there was to clarify debatable decisions, ofcourse they wont be all rainbows and happiness.

I think Casemiro's red against Hughes has to be up there, although I have seen more united games than others as a fan. VAR only showed the worst angle, didn't even look at Ayew shoving Fred in the face & meant he missed the game against Arsenal. The draw instead of a win also stopped us over taking City in the table at the time having just beat them.

The handball rules arent the same for offensive and defensive plays. If theres any type of handball in a goal or its lead up, it has to be disallowed. Thats why barça's goal had to be disallowed. For defensive handballs theres room for interpretation, natural positions, if it bounces of a different part of the body first, etc. I still think that dumfries should have been a pen tho.

The first Tottenham goal against Chelsea in the first PL game - a Chelsea player gets fouled in Tottenham's half. When I was watching the game, the Bulgarian commentator said: "Havertz get down and that is gonna be a free kick, most likely a yellow card as well... Oh never mind the ref said play on! Tottenham on the counter! " The entire stadium saw the foul, yet Anthony Taylor didn't see it. He didn't even check VAR afterwards! Anthony Taylor has always screwed Chelsea up, but that's another question

8:35 - I feel like this is a big issue with video refereeing in general, not just in football. Just viewing a super-slow-motion 4KUHD ultra-zoomed-in three-second clip of an incident is gonna make it look way more dramatic and bad than it actually is. Rugby has really suffered from this a lot recently, especially with the issues around head injuries leading to officials coming down hard on any kind of head contact or high tackle. But just like in football, in such a chaotic fast-moving game, even a tiny accidental contact or movement can look bad if you replay it over and over again in super-zoomed-in slowmo-vision. And in rugby, they also show those replays in the stadium, which then riles up the fans and puts more pressure on the referee to make a decision. We just had an incident in a high-profile international match, to decide a major trophy, where an attacking player ran towards a defender while trying to pick a loose ball up on the run, the defender couldn't tackle him as that would be a foul (tackling a player off the ball) so hesitates, attacker picks up the ball on the run and with a split second to react, the defender braced for impact as the attacker ran into him. But because the attacker happened to collide with the defender's arm headfirst in the contact - an arm that was firmly down by the defender's side, in a natural position for bracing for impact when someone's running at you at speed - the defender was sent off for head contact/foul play. And as soon as the VAR/TMO reviews only showed the same 3-second slo-mo clip of the impact over and over, making it look way more nasty and even malicious than it was, I knew it was going to be a red. Utterly ridiculous, and fortunately upon review after the game the red was downgraded to a yellow and the player's suspension was recinded. And while I don't think it directly affected the result of the game, it still ruined the contest and left a sour taste in many people's mouths. All because the officials wouldn't use some common sense when reviewing the incident.

Just to demonstrate the further inconsistency of officiating, with VAR determining that Casemiro should be sent off for that incident against palace, it for some reason decided that Hakim Ziyech shouldn’t be sent off against spurs despite literally slapping a spurs player in the face. He was shown a red card but then the VAR somehow decided that it wasn’t violent conduct. Earlier on in the same game, Harry Kane elbowed Kepa in the face after the latter made a clearance, but wasn’t punished by either the on field referee or the VAR. I didn’t know such blatant violence was now allowed in football, but the VAR in that game certainly seemed to think so. In Chelsea’s game away to Crystal Palace, Thiago Silva clearly and deliberately handled the ball as the last man while defending a counter attack, but somehow wasn’t sent off, and what made it worse is that he then assisted Aubamayang a few minutes later. I say all of these as a Chelsea fan, where in 2 of these 3 instances the opposition got absolutely shafted against us. I don’t mind being honest and admitting when things have wrongly gone in our favour, and it just shows how bad we are at the moment that we needed one in order to beat Palace on one occasion.

Just watch the West Ham v Fulham game from earlier this season, 2 of West Ham goals were hand balls, the 2nd one you can see Antonio flicking the ball up with his hand like it’s volleyball. Both times VAR reviewed it, both times they gave the goal. Scammacas wasn’t as bad as Antonio’s but even he refused to celebrate at first because he knew it should be disallowed

Thank you for mentioning Newcastle v. Crystal Palace if it would have called correctly Newcatle would right now be 4th place instead of 5th with 2 games in hand.
