I made many Airfix 1/72 kits when I was a kid, and it was “one coat of Humbrol enamel brushed on, done.” No weathering, panel lines, chipping. Not sure *anyone* did that in the 1970s - I never saw anything like it. What amazes me is that you can spray within the very small panels on a 1/72 aircraft. Takes really fine control with an airbrush to do that. I’m getting psyched up to give it a try myself. 😀

I hear you. Modeling has come a long way since we were kids. I remember just rushing to get done so we could play armchair pilot. I hop you will try some of these techniques on your build and let me know what you think.

@@FlyingSModels More questions - when you use the hole punch to create instruments for the instrument panel, where do you get the plastic sheet you are punching, and how thin is it? (Must be super-thin.) Doesn't seem like you would need a very big sheet to punch out a lot of very small 1/72 instruments. Are you trying to make a set of instruments that closely resembles the real ones, or just that "look artistic"?

@@dexterscott7824 I think I have a link to some various sheet styrene in the video description but that may just be rod and other stock. You can get it online or at a hobby shop or Hobby Lobby. It's Evergreen plastic sheet and I used various thicknesses from 0.010" to 0.020" or so. And I don't try to make it exactly like the real one, just a little more dimensional than a 2D decal.

Last night I discovered how incredibly small a 1/72 instrument panel was, which I didn't appreciate until I tried to improve it using your methods. In the video it looks a lot bigger! =D
@FlyingSModels
@FlyingSModels 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, a 1/72 instrument panel is quite small. The good thing is that it doesn't have to be perfect to give a good, representative look. They say the camera adds 10 pounds. Maybe it does the same thing to the instrument panel...making it look a lot bigger :)

I've recently taken up modelling again. The last time I built something I was probably 10 years old and ended up with more camouflage and parts on myself than on the plane. I keep coming back to your videos again and again for hints and trips. I'm learning so much and I'm getting decent results. The models you make look awesome. Thank you so much. This is excellent, especially for a 1/72nd scale effort. When I first saw the photo, I thought it must have been 1/48th. Your build style is really interesting in many ways. When I first started watching your channel, I wasn't sure about some of the mild exaggeration of colors, etc., but I have come to really like the effects. I think when you are building a scale model it is often necessary to exaggerate some effects; otherwise the result is a bit too dull for something that is small. Also, the fact that you use so many varied finishing techniques has valuable instructional value because the viewer can pick and choose from those options. Finally, I think you are telling people that its okay to build what suits your eye rather than some people who tend to tell you it should be a certain way to be right. An artistic painter, after all, creates based on impressions. Otherwise we might as well just take photographs. Good work.
@FlyingSModels
@FlyingSModels 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that very thoughtful and well communicated feedback. It seems as though you understand my approach and intentions far better than most. For nearly every modeler, building is a hobby, not a profession, so approaching it from a perspective of what works and looks best to the individual builder is what it's all about. Far too often, others in this hobby crush peoples spirits and artistic "flare" by trying to confine them to a particular approach to being "right". Art couldn't be farther away from that. Look at all the various styles that are out there. Is photographing a real subject art? Sure it is. But what about impressionistic painting? I say that's equally art. So I build the way I want and what looks good to me. As you say, if we build true to life, it often looks too plain or dull....at least to me. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. All the best - Chad

I am currently building that model myself and found when removing the Control Stick from the Spure tree can be a Pain, I found that using a small Razor Saw and cutting as close as you can to remove it. One thing to remember, when holding the Control Stick between your Fingers to either paint it or install it be CAREFUL, the Heat from your Finger will BREAK IT. I gone through 2 of these already and if you need to replace it, Airfix has one of the BEST "Customer Services" I ever used next to Revell of Germany.

Great build.....A helpful hint take a long piece of narrow tape and tape under one wing and pull it taught over the top of the plane and under the opposite wing. It will pull the seams together and all you need is to cement. It works great. It's simple, and it saves a lot of time.............
@FlyingSModels
@FlyingSModels 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that, Benny. I sometimes use that approach but in this case, it would have resulted in the wrong dihedral (by a lot). I checked that first and it was at the correct dihedral with that nasty gap. I should have just put the top wing parts on after installing the lower wing and fixing the alignment to the wing to wing joints if that existed. Appreciate the feedback!

I love that you are using just a few basic colors and materials and getting excellent results. I have been trying your weathering techniques and so far I have been well satisfied with the results. Great build and weathering. Beautiful outcome.,If I may make a suggestion. When I’m doing filling I like to put a piece of tape on each side of the line. I find it easier to get the putty into the gap and keep it from spreading over the whole surface. Not my idea but it’s worked really well for me. I’ve only used it on straight lines. I love the spruce idea you used on the wing to fuselage gaps. Thanks for the tips. 👍👍🇨🇦

I have now categorised your videos as MasterClass, because your explanations & techniques definitely rank as such compared to other contributors (with respect). My Desert P40 progress through the Festive season has been somewhat slow but I succeeded with your Canopy cut and wing root-fill methods. Thanks. I wondered if you have a production that shows your colouring, modulation & shading techniques for the exhaust pipes of these types of WW2 aircraft engine? The Airfix instructions on this kit only suggest a plain dark Greyish colour from the illustration on the box, but it is not specified. I realise they are rather small scale but for future builds at larger scales I would appreciate your take on them. Your latest Mustang post is brilliant.

Just a note for next time - you're not supposed to fill those 'gaps' on the wing root. If you check drawings you'll see the wings are bent upwards in a V shape; so if you're fitting the wings and pull them up there is no gap - it'll fit perfectly :)

Great job. I watching again and again as a tutorial for advancing my techniques. I have some questions: 1. How long dry time for oil paint layers? As I know oil paints dry long enough. Maybe you have some tricks for decreasing that time? 2. Which colors you had used for exhaust pipe?
@FlyingSModels
@FlyingSModels 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Alex. I appreciate the feedback and I'm glad that the videos are helpful. As far as your questions, I don't wait long at all for the oil paint layers to dry. I find that with the use of the white spirits, they are usually good to go in a couple of hours at max. Most of the time, if you don't overdue the application of the oil paints, they are dry within 15 mins or so. It's really more about using them, along with those white spirits, to blend into the flat base colors to change the tone. On the exhaust pipes, I usually start by painting black and then come back in and airbrush a mixture of black and red brown and then some grey. I build up layers to get various effects. Hope all this helps. Let me know if you have any additional questions. All the best!

Great video. Many thanks for this. One quick question though. I couldn't help but notice that other than the black pre-shading, you don't seem to have primed the model before painting. Do you have any trouble with paint adhesion? Thanks!
@FlyingSModels
@FlyingSModels 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Tom. Appreciate the feedback. I don't always prime my models and don't typically have issues with paint adhesion. I do typically sand down the surface a little while I'm taking care of the seams just to help the paint stick better. I'll prime every now and again, especially for metal finish models or ones where I did a lot of modifications, filling, and sanding. But priming is always a safe bet, that's for sure.

I'm trying to do this build for my first kit. I am having trouble removing some of the really small pieces from the sprues like the control column and the pitot tube. I broke the control column and will have to get one from another kit or scratch build one. Do you have any suggestions for ways to remove the tiny bits from the sprues without breaking them?
@FlyingSModels
@FlyingSModels 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear about that trouble but don't feel alone. I too had trouble with the control stick on the kit and it broke in half. I just glued it back together. I tried to snip the sprue attach point off all at once and may have been better served to cut it a little at a time with several "snips". I guess you could try to lay the sprue on the bench and cut it clean with a new blade but that may put too much flex in the control column too (if you can't get the sprue and part to sit flush with the build surface). You have identified a weakness in the kit itself in that the parts are too small for the attach gates. I didn't try this (and it may not work) but you might try to put some tape on the small part before snipping the attach point. This might prevent some flex. You could remove it after the first "snip" and then clip the other end. Just a thought. Hope this helps.
