OK, here's some info for your viewers questioning your mic placement. The mic's on aviation headsets (and the hand PTT mic's as well) are Noise Cancelling Microphones. Unlike a normal mic which only has one opening for sound pickup, a noise-cancelling mic has an opening facing your mouth to pickup your voice as well as any ambient cockpit noise. It also has another opening on the rear of the mic housing which only picks up the cockpit ambient noise. Since the noise impinges upon both the front and rear of the mic diaphragm, the noise vibrations cancel each other out, leaving only your voice. When you move the mic element away from your mouth, your voice is also picked up at the rear opening, cancelling your voice vibrations. That's why noise cancelling mics require that you position them very close to your mouth.

Anyone complaining about the microphone close to your mouth has never flown with a headset and should shut up. These mics have a very assertive high pass filter in order to block out engine noise. They are designed to be right against your mouth.

I used to be a professional audio tech for live/stage events, (not a engineer). A close to source mic placement means that you can turn down the gain which ostensibly means that the mic picks up less extraneous sound. That is what you want for the vocal talent, other microphone placements (distances & types) are used for instruments and audiences. Mic placement is a balancing act with mic gain setting and how the talent behaves. I find a few too many KZbin aviators overdo the mic gain which makes for bad (crunchy) audio.

Enjoyed your video. Brought back memories of flying in that area when I was based at Fort Carson in 1970-71. I did some flying in a Mooney Ranger and a Statesman out of a small airport just south of COS that doesn't exist anymore. I think that it was called Rocky Mountain. I got my Private license about 2 weeks before I went in the Army and I managed to do a little flying wherever I was stationed. Back in the days when I could rent for about $15-$20 and hour. I also saw Bob Hoover at COS when he came into COS to do his 2 engine, 1 engine, no engine demo in what I think was a Shrike Commander because the FBO was an Aero Commander dealer. Amazing demo by an amazing pilot. Thanks for triggering those memories again.

Talking about fuel burn. When a crew chief of a 1964 C-130E USAF the fuel burn was 1100 lbs per hour per engine for a total of 4400 lbs per hour and a TIT 900 degrees C. Good thing the plane had 68,000 lbs of fuel. The normal ground load of fuel was 24,000 lbs. And when hauling freight we were lucky to cruise at 27,000 ft.

Another great video Rich, M2 is a beautiful ship... You mentioned the turboprops, so Interesting to look at the M2 numbers on this flight, and compare to the TBM turboprop. You are 22%( 70K ) faster, but you're burning about twice the fuel (+100%). Turboprops are efficiency kings by a wide margin. Next, if you had 300 lbs more useful available on this flight, the TBM would have given us 450 lbs more useful load with 2 on board and tanks full. And yes, greater chance of being on top for sure in the M2, being at FL400 vs FL310 max in the TBM. On the turbulence equation, that seems most often associated with altitudes near the tropopause where the jetstream and mixing action is going on, and right where the airlines are flying low 30's to high 30's. The TBM ride is usually always smooth between FL200 - FL300 as we are far enough below the tropopause action, and so your FL400 can be just high enough to get a smooth ride on the turbulent days depending on the jet stream action on any given day,

I agree with you on the mic placement. I also use it close, almost touching my lips. When I first started flying, before noise cancellation and modern electronics, if you didn't have the mic close to your lips, you would have trouble activating the VOX feature. Not a problem communicating with ATC because you would use the PTT button, but to communicate with pilots or passengers, you would almost have to scream to activate the VOX system. Now days, you don't even notice the VOX feature.

Hey Rich & Matteo, another great one, well done. Interesting playing with the altitude vs. TAS vs. fuel flow equation….. does your FMC give you an Optimum or Recommended flight level, accounting for actual winds? Appreciate what you say about the fuel burn being significantly better at FL400, but that 120kt on the nose must really affect the numbers. Saw you had 75kt headwind at the lower levels, … so often with jets it’s a question of do we want to go fast or do we want to go cheap!? Keeping above the weather and other traffic always good for sure. Keep up the good work guys.
@FlyingwithRich
@FlyingwithRich Жыл бұрын
We usually look at Foreflight to get best altitude. It’s mindless now to access best altitude for fuel/time with flight planning like Foreflight. It’s almost always highest altitude for time/fuel burn. Some shorter trips obviously not, but even then normally the higher the better.

I dont guess you have flown a Piaggio P.180 Avanti yet. It cruises at 365 kts easy but can do over 450 kts and do it all at FL-310 to FL-410 and burning less than a jet. While flying to Rio and San Paulo, Brazil out of Houston, we would many times climb to FL-400 after about 4 or 5 hours flying time and burning off some weight. If you want to get well above the commercial traffic, go to Fl-450 and then you are almost always alone.

@@FlyingwithRich You might be thinking about the Beechcraft Starship not catching on very well, but the Piaggio is pretty well established. With both aircraft, the sound is weird and makes you think...what Japanese monster show is on now...weird but double cool sound. If you ever come to Fort Worth let me know ahead of time and I will see what I can do about getting you in one. The guy that bought up most of the Starships and that really upset Beechcraft because they wanted them is based in Denton and there is a Piaggio service center in Denton. Nice flight back, Rich. Wonderful to see you flying something like this. Hey, gotta question for you. Your cameraman, is he also a rated pilot? I could be wrong, but if you're above FL400, do you have to be on oxygen if there isn't another rated pilot in the right seat? If so, is that above FL400, or does it start at FL400? I'm assuming since you weren't on O2, it wasn't at FL400. What's the rated ceiling for an M2?
