Hi Dianne. My sink is soaking as I type this and I wanted to say thanks for the video. I have tried to declutter and get my house in order many times but I am determined to do it this time and it's the first time in a long time that I have made a new years resolution. Maybe it has to do with turning 40 a few months ago but I have big plans for this year and its all starting with a clean sink and a decluttered porch!

Thank you Diane for not deleting these! This never gets old! 3 years ago I went from chaos to sparkling clean and organised while pregnant and following your baby steps. While in a labor at the hospital a friend went to my apartment to grab some things, I think she was a little bit freaked out by how perfectly organised it was 😂 Fly lady got me there. Looking forward to going from chaos to clean once again (with a 2 year old this time)

So I’m just starting here in Albuquerque New Mexico (I’m an almost 70-year-old fourth generation Scandihoovian - Norwegian/Danish - New Mexican) after watching the videos and prepping for the thirty-one baby steps! I broke both my feet in 2019, and have been slowly recovering (just started driving my car again this week). We had to sell my house and now I live alone in the 2000-square-foot “family house” which is buried under five generations of stuff. But my shoes are on and my sink is clean! Finding you and Dana and Dawn has been life-changing for me! I’m so ready for this! Thank you!

Hello, wonderful Diaine! I”m writing in March of 2024; I”m enjoying and benefitting from this video as much as I did the first time I viewed it, several years ago! I enjoy your current 3X per week schedule so much, that I thought I would supplement it with taking a bit of afternoon coffee/self-care time too revisit your beginning 31 steps series. I knew I’d enjoy it, but didn’t realize how helpful it would be to walk back through the beginner’s fundamentals, just as ballet dancers go to the barre each morning. It’s 12;40 PM right now, but when I finish my coffee, I’m going to hop up and shine my (already pretty shiny) sink…. One of many things I’ve learned from you is the value of not stopping at viewing and wishing, but going on to do the steps you demonstrate. Cheers, and Rah Rah Rah!

I started the babysteps a couple weeks ago, and I can feel and see a difference. And my husband noticed too! I'm amazed at how much difference the little steps make. It seems like it's "a lot to do" starting the steps, the routines, etc., but once they're in place, they "fly" by, and suddenly, there's nothing to straighten up in a room or two - which feels really strange at first, LOL. But it's great. I'm fighting the urge to jump into zones - I know I'll judge myself and backslide if I do. The steps are working. The weekly blessing is next. Just a little bit at a time - one thing more than zero (like you say), and it has impact

Only missed one day so far this month and that was intentional because I cleaned the sink and started the dishwasher before we went out for a date night, but then the babysitter let the kids have a special dessert and left a few dishes. I thought that was ok to leave those for the morning. I am feeling very successful!

Thanks Diane for a well explained and non-judgemental video. I appreciate you stating to use what you have and that you explained why washing the dishes does not need to occur first. What I am willing to try: - Boiling water - Vinegar - Maintaining the sink with a mild cleanser (initial/deep cleaning would be with Bar Keepers Friend) What I do differently: - 4:05 I don't use the same scrubber/rag/sponge that is used for dishes (and even the countertop) to clean the sink because sinks are filled with germs. - 4:25 I keep my sink scrubber under the sink and not on the counter top so that it is not used for dishes. - 4:18 The closer to the stopper, the more germs are present, therefore, it is more hygenic to clean from the top-down. I start with around the sink, then the faucet, then the sink walls, then the sink bottom. The stopper would be last as sink/shower drains have as much or more germs than the inside of a toilet bowl.

Nyx773 I think perfection stops us all. Was it really necessary to say you don’t like this and that. She is trying to help people get motivated and get started. Perhaps if you have something you don’t agree with you keep it to yourself vs trying to make someone else feel bad that they aren’t doing it the way you think is right.
@Nyx7735 жыл бұрын
@@collef1136 1) I never stated "I don't like". I never scolded. I was not unkind. I never stated that I was "right". I never stated that she was doing it wrong. 2) I didn't use any "you" statements in my disagreements. I only used "I" and "me" statements to state what 'I' would do differently and why 'I' think that way. It is inappropriate to disagree using "you" statements because it comes across as attacking. 3) Since Diane gave my comment a "heart", I take that to mean that not only was she not offended, but that she appreciated my comment. Note: Unlike some KZbinrs, she does not give out hearts to every comment. 4) Since I have 3 thumbs up, I take that to mean that other people agree and/or were inspired to clean their sink in a more hygienic manner. Perhaps I prevented an illness? 5) I can't "make" anybody feel a certain way. It is the other person's choice. 6) Overall, I choose my words carefully. One reason is to make sure that I don't come across as a HYPOCRITE, e.g. someone who is being a textbook example of what they are stating is wrong about another person's comment.

A quick and eco-friendly way to thoroughly clean the sink is to first rinse the sink well with water, spray down with straight vinegar, bottom, sides, the entire sink and let it sit for a bit. Then sprinkle on baking soda and scrub out any stains or stuck on bits, the drain, etc. Then rinse with water and finish off with a pour of boiling water, dry it, then spray on rubbing alcohol or pour a little on a rag and buff to a nice clean shine. This is a thorough cleaning and disinfecting that leaves the sink spotless and really only takes a few minutes. If you just need to spiff it up a bit then you can skip the boiling water, drying out and rubbing alcohol finish.

Thank you so much for using vinegar! I use non-toxic and cheap products like white vinegar, baking soda, lemons, etc. Baking soda is a good alternative to dry or liquid abrasive cleaners. For HEAVY DUTY abrasion, like to scour grills or oven racks, you can use salt if the baking soda isn't enough. Just don't use salt on surfaces that can be damaged if scratched! You can also use baking soda & vinegar to keep sinks from clogging. Pour some baking soda in the drain, followed by the vinegar, and put a rubber stopper over it to make it expand into the pipe where you want it, rather than up into the sink. Leave it sit for 30 minutes or so and then flush it out with boiling water.

Since I inherited the house and want to retire there it was imperative to get it in working order. The system works and the house is now beautiful, calm, and organized. Ready for me to retire there in two years. I use it now as a vacation home. Fast forward to now and the flat I'm living in is completely out of control. I was in a bad accident and was unable to care for my flat properly. I find myself overwhelmed again. Somehow I forgot how useful and effective the flylady system is. Duh. Hi FlyLady Diane! I'm on board with trying the FlyLady, and I just watched your #1 video for sink shining. I must say... your sink starting out is so far ahead of mine when it's just been cleaned! The problem for me us hard water deposits that I've yet to find a solution for. Needless to say, because my sink never looks clean, I've found that I never feel motivated to clean it. It will not shine. I'm defeated before I even begin. I don't want to be this way with my kitchen sink any longer because it's so true what FlyLady says: if your kitchen sink and kitchen are not clean, the remainder of the house falls apart. Please, please help me.

Hi Darla! All we are doing is putting one foot in front of the other and making progress. One of the key parts of Flylady is letting go of perfectionism...don't focus on the 'shiny' part. Just dry out your sink every evening after dinner and keep the area clear. You can do it!

Diane in Denmark Thanks Diane for getting back to me. Yes I do appreciate the non-perfectionism attitude! What I've done is just modified the step...a little. I went online and found a vinegar recipe for hard water scale. It actually works!!! First time a combination of time and product worked for this issue. So, I'm going to spend a little extra time each day on the scale removal, and then finish up with the sink shining. That way the scale will get taken care of and I can still work my steps. I must say the fact you use vinegar in your sink cleaning may have encouraged me to try the vinegar scale remedy. So....thank you!!!

as somebody who struggles with ocd, even this is difficult for me. what exactly did you do to make it clean? is it clean from bacteria or just shiny? also, i can see you used a brush, am i suppose to toss it out, because my sink is disgusting. are you going to use that brush now to clean the dishes, or do you have a separate brush? you only cleaned the inside of the sink, but i have a bunch of water deposit and grime at the bottom of handle, how do i clean that? yes these questions are stopping me from just doing the baby step, but i get panic attacks otherwise...

Hi Ayu Umi! I would suggest that you don't stress over this step, simply dry out the sink after dinner and keep the area clear. The purpose is to have a clean area that we can maintain. Hope that helps!

What’s a good way to get rid of calcium deposits that have built up around the bottom of kitchen faucet? My sink is shining, except for this one little issue.

How often should we do this though? I wouldn’t think we need to deep clean with boiling water and vinegar that much everyday for sure...
@DianeinDenmark5 жыл бұрын
Just the very first day. After that we are simply keeping the sink empty.

Brilliant, thank you Diane! I loved doing the FlyLady stuff a few years ago but now realize I need to find my way back to it. I think your inspiring videos are just what I need to get going again! I can't find the app you mention though, is it perhaps not available for Androids?
@DianeinDenmark4 жыл бұрын
Hi Susanne and welcome! I don't think they ever got that app off the ground. I use Google Keep for Android.

Hi Diane, I've done this and the sink looks a bit cleaner but only up until where the water is. I''ve got a brown line around teh rim of the link Also my draining board has got weird stuff on it. Maybe water marks or soap marks? I've tried bleach/flash kitchen but still not working Also what do i do about my washing up bowl and my draining board? My draining board looks very dirty too? Do I throw it and buy a new one or do I try and clean it?

Unfortunately there are busy evenings because of kids' activities and the kitchen isn't cleaned at bed time. (Sometimes I stay up to clean it, but most times I'm too tired. )Should I make sure the kitchen is cleaned before wiping down the sink, or just forget about the dishes , stove top and counters and at least get my sink cleaned before going to bed? Thanks
@DianeinDenmark7 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen! Just remove anything that is in the sink and wipe it out (shouldn't take more than 15 seconds). I talk about it more in detail when we get further into the babysteps, but a great tip I learned from Flylady was to clear the counters/wash up as you are prepping/cooking dinner. Fill up the sink with soapy water before you start and put everything in the dishwasher/wash up as you go along.That way, when dinner is eaten, all you need to deal with are the plates/cutlery/glasses. Good luck!
