I recently saw a video suggesting that if you feel overwhelmed by a project, to do the smallest imaginable teeny tiny part of it. For example, if you want to write a book but you're afraid to start, write one sentence. Then do it again the next day. And the next. And so on. When you feel comfortable with that, write two sentences. The same goes for decluttering or cleaning. If you're overwhelmed by the very thought of the monumental task ahead of you, throw away one piece of scrap paper or one ratty old t-shirt. Then do it again the next day. This worked for me; I hadn't decluttered my living room in 5 years (yes, the papers in my piles went back as far as 5 years). I started 2 weeks ago, and I'm halfway done. Some days I only do a tiny bit, but other days I make a great deal of progress, even in a 10 or 15 minute period. I can see the surface of my coffee table for the first time in 5 years and my floor is clear of junk. You can call me a recovering hoarder.

Thank you Diane. I have just completed the 31 baby steps following your videos. I am a perfectionist and procrastinator and had to have a little laugh to myself when we started creating our control journal and you said it didn't have to be fancy etc as my immediate reaction was to create laminated, colour coded sheets on my pc with daily checkboxes. I would have spent longer creating the sheets than actually cleaning anything.

Today I've really had to be in the mindset of "anything is better than nothing." Being home sick with a head cold and wiped out with low quality sleep for a few weeks now (33 weeks pregnant) I've just had to do 5 minutes at a time or sometimes even less before I rest for several minutes. But one friend encouraged me by saying, "you're growing a human being and that's work enough for one day." :)

You are the best presenter of this system I've seen and there are many people on KZbin who show themselves doing the zones. I watched one the other day and it totally wore me out. If I were new to this, I would have said, "no way". Instead, I have gone through the babysteps and am doing 15 min a day, plus some missions in the current zone and my house shows it! My husband is also doing some changes in his routine after asking what I'm doing! Wonderful job, Flylady Diane! P.S. we are going on a cruise in April-May and one of the stops is Copenhagen for a day-do you have any suggestions for any "must-sees"?

Hello, Flylady Diane! I want to say thank you so, so much for your videos. I am amazed how well the Fly Lady system works, and your videos have been most helpful and encouraging! My almost-eight-year old daughter and I watch them together. We pick our clothes together every evening, and we have so much fun going through the missions and routines. She loves explaining and encouraging her less-motivated older sister. While I have been a long-time believer/user of a timer, somehow the 31 Babysteps have given me the direction I needed to get more done in so much less time, giving me time to do the things I love, and spend time with people I care about. Thank you so much from Montreal, Canada. Elisa

Hi Diane, I'm just finishing the 31 baby steps. You and these 31 videos have been life changing. We are in a small house and the hot spots are gone. I've got more decluttering to do but what a difference your videos on the Flylady baby steps have made. I'm anxious to continue and will be following along with your other videos. Thank you so much for making all of these videos (3+ years ago!) I've gone through the all, one by one taking about 5 weeks to get through them all and try to instill all of the habits. The washing machine died for a full week and I completely abandoned a couple some of the daily baby steps but then after the washing machine was fixed the mountains of laundry that were left over weren't so much of an insurmountable task knowing that I can just implement the baby steps again and start to see progress a step at a time. But I know that before watching your videos the washing machine dying probably would have sent me off a cliff haha. I wouldn't have even known where to start to begin again!

I am very grateful for this video. With preparing and observing the High Holidays,and my husband fainting, I haven’t done the hot spot, room rescue, or declutter for days!. But some days, I see one thing to eliminate. Yesterday, it was a Lenox wedding day platter that I never liked much. I can simplify the counter and dust faster if I donate it. But I have felt bad I’m not doing more. Thanks for saying that whatever I do is ok. MWAH!

My sink has been shiny for 46 days! I occasionally do a mission. My control journal is set up and I follow a morning routine, after school drop off and after dinner/before bedtime routine. The house looks really good. The one hiccup is my tile floor. The grout is so gross and it is rough grout so I don't feel like it can get clean enough without scrubbing. My hound drools a lot and has made some places especially stained. I still have hope that things will keep getting better. So that is good. :)
@DianeinDenmark7 жыл бұрын
Well done, Jenny! And - yes - just keep going with your routines...the tile floor will get better. Just do a quick mop during your Weekly Home Blessing (see the video on that) and enjoy a non-sticky floor! :-)

I have finished the baby steps so now along with my daily routine do I do a daily home blessing and zones or one or the other... (Sorry my question mark dont work). This has been going great for me. When it came to the folding laundry I hate that I found it really don't take long to fold a load. I spent a lot of time folding all the unfolded laundry in my bed room and got the clan laundry basket out of my room so that I get the laundry out of the dryer go across the hall from my bathroom where the washer and dryer are to my bed room and put them on the bed and fold them right then. No more pile of clean laundry in my bed room. I don"t have a big room it took a lot of room. Many other places of the house are clean or in the process. I had a lot of cluttered places. There is me my husband and four kids. So kind of crazy. Thanks sooo much for the videos. Gotta go get moving.

aaagh. My mum is here trying to get me to do HER system. Polishing everything in the house until it shines. Bleaching everything. My house will be gleaming by tonight. I keep muttering about Flylady and not burning out. Still, it's just for the day... and I'll be able to skip home blessing tomorrow and get back to decluttering and Missions!! Plus I'll have a head start on those zones. I'm sticking to your sysem... whatever my mum says :) x

Hello Diane I did your 31 baby steps from 1st to 31st of October '20 as a present to myself as it was my bday month. I did them every day. One major achievement was mission cleaning my kitchen cabinet. I now love getting dressed to 'house' shoes. I also love that my kitchen is mostly tidy now. It's a work in progress, however I feel proud of my achievements so far. During November, I managed to keep up baby steps, although my mission cleans have not been as regular as I would like.. But yesterday, I continued with cleaning moss off front gate. My question: You didn't cover the zones in the 31 baby steps. Now that I am doing zone cleaning, do I also have to do an extra 15 minutes mission clean also? Thank you for the boost that you have given to my life. Cannot leave kitchen without shining my sink!!
@DianeinDenmark4 жыл бұрын
Well done! There is really no need to do 15 minutes of zone cleaning four or five times a week. Add a session when you can but make sure you have done the basic routines first, and take breaks. Some weeks you may have time/energy to zone clean, other weeks less so. That's life 😊

Hi again Beverley! It's probably easiest to follow along with my zone videos kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmPVq4mjh7-VnLs (I explain where we are, what we are doing, work along with you for 15 minutes) but basically the house is split into 5 zones and we do a different zone every week of the month. The missions and zones are posted on the Flylady website www.flylady.net/c/sp.php#missions and the Flylady plus app itunes.apple.com/us/app/flyladyplus/id1115477521?mt=8

I have a question about the app. I downloaded and started using it. I can tell it's going to be useful but I am not sure what I am getting wrong. Morning routine, ticked off most things, then today I expected it to refresh and it hasn't. I clicked on the reset button and it questioned if I wanted to do that. I said yes, but now it's telling me 5 days left. I don't know why. Can you help?

Hi Diane, I completed the 31 baby steps yesterday... and now I'm panicking... Have I missed something, what am I meant to be watching now? What is the next step? I noticed you said at the beginning of this video that you said it's been three weeks since we completed the baby step... Help! am I meant to be waiting three weeks until I watch it? No meaning to be thick.
@DianeinDenmark7 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachel! When you have completed the babysteps and are being consistent with your Routines, then it's time for you to add in the Weekly Home Blessing Hour (if you want me to walk you through it, there's a series here kzbin.info/aero/PLxIYCyTLBED9z6PKxuWBFoCbiq6jw_j-A ). Keep decluttering for 5-15 minutes on a daily basis and keep doing your Routines - those are key. When you feel you are ready, you can also add in the occasional mission. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other, and remember to take breaks!
@rachelmcclatchie62347 жыл бұрын
Bless you, thank you for replying (again) x The old thinking is so ingrained, isn't it! Thank you for your videos; you really helped me through the baby steps, and I can hear the words " it doesn't have to be perfect" in my head counteracting the "mother" voice that criticises me at every turn. My house feels wonderful, my life and home much less cluttered and chaotic! Thank you, and Thank you Flylady! xxx
