Not gonna' lie, this scene used to terrify me as a kid. The fingers systematically being erased one-by-one was especially effective imagery to the young mind. I used to fast-forward this scene up until the digital tunnel bit. Not a problem today, of course. To think, Flynn never got that rug back from the MCP.

I so wish they had made Sam Flynn's entry into the Grid like the original. In the new version, it just flashes and he's there in his regular clothes. This makes it look much more like being transformed into a digital entity.

Agreed. TRON Legacy was rushed into production after the thunderous applause the surprise vfx trailer got at the 2008 Comic-Con. The producers forgot some significant touches like that IMO-and I wish they actually showed Kevin Flynn using a computer in that scene where he created CLU 2.0, just like how he was hacking into the ENCOM system in the first film, using an Apple III to do it. . .

A $33 million box office from a $17 million budget meant a profit back in 1982. Indeed other movies in 1982 were cruelly ignored by the movie going audience. "Bladerunner" and "The Thing" suffered even worse, but later both became respected.

It never ceases to amaze me how stupid they were. They build a device that can digitise a human being and not only do they place a control terminal right in front of it. but they place it so that anyone at it would be a sitting duck. If the laser happened to be powering up, anyone sitting at the terminal would be completely oblivious to it. By definition, to operate this dangerous device you would have to sit directly in its line of fire in a chair that should have the bull's eye on its back.

Not completely true. . .Rewatch the scene earlier in the movie where Dr. Lora Baines and Dr. Walter Gibbs are in the laser bay, and they digitize the orange, suck it inside the mainframe, and then they take it out of the mainframe, rebuilding it by using the data the computer stored on the orange's molecular composition (literally explaining as they do so). Also, it makes more sense, given the world of the story, that Flynn used the private terminal near the Shiva Laser, to hack into the mainframe, so that (again, they literally spell this out by character dialogue), he could get in and out before Ed Dillinger knew what was happening, AND Flynn, being the nifty genius he was, forged an access password to hopefully get in undetected. However, the MCP, being smarter than Kevin, Alan & Lora thought, detected the intrusion and figured he'd teach Flynn a lesson by attempting to do to him what he'd done to several other programs and systems: oppress them by forcing them to play gladiatorial video games, which would then enable the MCP to appropriate each program it destroyed, leading to eventual domination of all cyberspace, and consequently the USERS on the other side of the screen. TRON:Legacy (even though it DID NOT take place in the ENCOM mainframe) kinda expanded on that premise with CLU 2.0's attempts to take over the real world, by planning to steal his creator Kevin Flynn's disc.

The novelisation has a line in the scene with the orange. A security camera is watching and the text says "Unknown to them, the MCP was very interested in this experiment". Then, in this scene it reiterates that the MCP has monitored all the laser experiments and knows even more about the digitising process than the scientists do. And from the MCP's perspective if the process is fatal, so what? The main goal was to get rid of Flynn before he could find the incriminating evidence and to do so without leaving a body. That objective was achieved either way. Having him fight to the death in the games he created himself was just a bit of sadistic icing on the cake.

The CLUe about this movie never aging, or aging too well, lies on the computer technology constant evolving. Tron 3 future success relies on the way it's put on the screen. The concept of being transferred to another world always fascinated us, what about a world we created? That's the genius idea in this movie. Plus we better remember that most of the characters, Dillinger aside, are friends to Flynn, the true User/God in this world. And that part of the movie make us think that humanity runs the programs, as they were created by humans...

The description is a little vague - actually the MCP communicates with Flynn, to stop Flynn from hacking into the system to prove that his work was stolen by the MCP's USER (Dillinger). The name of the world Flynn is sucked into isn't called TRON and really isn't given a proper name in the movie, but referred to in terms such as, "the game grid", "the simuation sea", and "the system"; TRON is the name of the security program created by its user, Alan Bradley, and is a threat to the MCP.

Flynn PROBABLY DIDN`T know how to copy Alan`s Design exactly so it makes sense The Digitization Process would be different ! Also , Bradley was A Scientist/Computer Tech/Geek so was more imaginative while Flynn was A Businessman and thus more practical !

@1993MovieMan The ENCOM 511 server (the digital world in the first TRON film ONLY) IS NOT Alan Bradley's world. Bradley was one of several hundred USERS connected to the ENCOM 511. Dr. Walter Gibbs created the ENCOM 511, and then when Ed Dillinger came along, he wrote and upgraded THE MCPwhich was basically malware. TRON was antivirus software. Basically, Alan gave TRON a patch which enabled him to help destroy the MCP. Flynn had User Privileges which allowed him to put the nail on the MCP. Flynn built his own version of the Shiva Laser (which is in TRON Legacy) and used it to go into his own server - a server that, unlike the ENCOM 511, was not connected to cyberspace. Flynn was a genius - and much more intelligent and resourceful than young Alan Bradley. If not, then how was Kevin able to HACK into ENCOM as well as make the history he made in the world of the films?

I always thought MCP was the best computer villain ever. HAL9000 sounded too nice and sort of indifferent to whatever it was doing, not to mention HAL9000 was actually malfunctioning in 2001-A space odyssey. Colossus-The Forbin Project was actually a computer that wanted to rule the world to save mankind from destroying themselves. Hence not really a villain. Funny how Dillinger wrote MCP but MCP hardly reveres Dillinger and merely sees him as a tool to do his bidding in the real world.
