Martin Short is the only person that can make me laugh out loud when I’m alone on the couch. His brain is so fast! He’s a comedic genius. And I loved his book. You get to know the private Marty, his pain when he lost his wife. And you learn why he and Steve Martin are so close.

So much love and gratitude for this man. Marty gave my brother and me so much laughter when it was needed the most. Then i was surprised - long story short, in his excellent memoir, he taught me how to grieve, which i needed right as i finished the book. I just love him, he's a special human being and we're so grateful to and for him. :0)

I'm so lucky to have grown up with Martin Short on TV. As a Canadian kid, SCTV was around for me from about Grade 5 in elementary school. We all loved it. I kept watching it for a few years, then when I was a teen Martin Short was on SNL. I didn't always get to watch it, but loved it. For both SCTV and SNL, not just me, but my sister and friends would wait for the Martin Short parts. If SCTV was a rerun, we'd wish so much that he would be in the opening part where they show the cast for that particular episode. It was guaranteed laughs if he was on. There was even a Martin Short Special on when I was in high school, which my friend taped. We'd watch that over and over. Fun times! Martin Short explaining to David Letterman about his appearance on Johnny Carson with Bette Davis makes me cry with laughter. I'm blessed to have watched so many episodes of him and John Candy and all the other greats on SCTV. Canadians are so rich when it comes to comedy. Lucky!

Love all these guys. Huge fan from the beginning. Grew up watching Marty on letterman and loved him in Father of the Bride. I was inspired by Marty to be funny with my friends in high school. Marty and Steve Martin are huge father figures to me. I even loved Mr. Short in the TV show Merlin. I also love Dana and David. When I had hard times, I watched Dana's stand up and it totally changed my bad bad day in college. I also loved Dana doing jimmy Stewart on conan's final show and he inspired me to do my jimmy impression to cheer up my mom and dad. I'm 35 by the way....anyway I really love David also. Huge fan of Emperors New Groove and lights out. Loved the Wrong Missy. Such geniuses. So quick and real, honest, and lovable. So in love with all of them. So handsome. Probably taller than me. I'm 5'7. But seriously I have looked up to them my whole life. Proud of them for sure. Thank you gentlemen. Can't wait for more. I've listened to all the podcasts. Especially all the early ones. Thanks for being such an inspiration to my children and my family

I produced a campus TV magazine type show at The Ohio State University in the 80s. Dana was doing a show at Mershon Auditorium on campus. He was red hot on SNL at the time.. We were able to find him at Columbus Airport and asked for an interview in a room at airport we set up in. He not only agreed to help us college kids he gave 100 percent and let us follow backstage. Total great guy. I still have the tape but it's 3/4 inch and have nothing to play it on. Dana had a killer set that night. Thanks again Dana

Great interview! That was fun. I've just discovered this show & I'm loving it. Although, as an Aussie from Melbourne, I have to say that the Aussie accent attempt near the end was horrible; but then, almost nobody from outside of Australia can do our accent. We can always tell when it's a non-Aussie actor playing an Aussie character.

Everything Short did on SCTV was really funny. I wish he would've shared more SCTV stories. It's a shame that his stint on SNL with Shearer and Guest didn't get a chance to flourish. It was nice to hear him compliment Jan Hooks. She was my favorite female cast member without a doubt. It was sad how she faded away and then left us.
@AvengerII Жыл бұрын
"It's a shame that his stint on SNL with Shearer and Guest didn't get a chance to flourish. " They only signed up for a year! All these men had flourishing careers and didn't need to do SNL. That year was the last year Dick Ebersol was executive producer of SNL before Lorne returned. Even if those cast members had not been final with their contracts, in all likelihood Lorne would have gone with an entirely new cast or mostly new cast. It just would have been awkward to stay with the show with the transition from Ebersol to Michaels.

@@AvengerII I know all that already. It would've been nice to see this gifted group of people write material that reflected their talents. Sure, they had the occasional great sketch, but their hearts were clearly not in it for the most part. Ok, cue reply shooting everything I just said down:

Marty is a hero of mine and to me really should be to anyone whoever truly embraces the comedic medium. A prime example being the Jiminy Glick “interviews” which are great comedy as at least a partly spontaneous sardonic spew fest. But there are some duds as well. With all that improvising there simply has to be. And that’s what you have to appreciate. The balls of doing that high wire act over and over again. I will say thanks to youtube I spotted his supremely challenged character Lawrence on Half Wits the SCTV bit. My god how can something so dark and wrong be so GD funny? Truly incredible how he became that really just mentally lost and repellent cretin. “Righty-O Alex.”

I really enjoy this podcast. And I loved the whole SCTV thing, at times even more than the early SNL, when it was at its best. But I have never found Martin Short to be amusing at any level. I think HE finds himself amusing more than anyone. He is bold in some of his characters, so a hat tip for that - but it's not the same as funny. John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Angela Martin etc all were funnier back then. Short comes across as a needy cartoon character whenever I watch him. Just one man's opinion. Spade & Carvey get the best out of most everybody though, regardless of who they are.
