You 2 guys are the two I tend to ‘lean into the most’ for professional commentary on accidents. Appreciate you both.

As a pilot, I'm hoping the lessons learned for pilots coming out of this is hold these shows and these air bosses accountable for providing a proper briefing and if it's incomplete or unsafe, you are still the PIC and need to be willing to say no-go. I realize there are contracts and crowd enjoyment at stake, but neither of those is a priority over everyone staying alive.

Morally and ethically it doesn't excuse what he's saying, but Mr. Royce's responses sound like they're exactly what his lawyer would want him to say.

One thing to consider in the last seconds is the optics. The B-17 would likely be appearing on his peripheral vision, but here's the possible kicker. The B-17 does not "move" in his field of view....it grows "LARGER" as it likely was on a inbound radial course relative the fighter, and if so that would likely not trigger a peripheral vision cue of something moving. They really ought to go after that Air Boss for negligent homicide, just sayin.

I have flown airshows and the act was never changed in the air. I would like to think that if I sat in on that briefing I would cancel my participation.
@AlbertusMagnus_447 сағат бұрын
I’m flabbergasted that they can have an air show of this kind without every move being planned and choreographed and all pilots involved in the planning. I am not a pilot and all I can do is react to the information presented. But it seems to me that a show with multiple classes of planes in the air at the same time simply cannot be operated where one person is calling out unplanned and unrehearsed maneuvers. This accident was ridiculous and unnecessary and easily preventable. This makes me never want to attend an air show again.

After some of the spectacular airshows disasters in the 80s, I never go see flight shows. I just go see the planes on the ground.

No formation experience, sloppy briefing, no plan, no deconfliction, nonstandard/ridiculous radio comms, no self-reflection -- each one of these makes me crazy, then to hear he continued to do shows. ...sometimes words are not enough.
@charlesfaure11895 сағат бұрын
Even worse is the pilots' willingness to participate. Ultimately, safe operation is the responsibility of the pilots.
@dieseldan51896 сағат бұрын
Why did the pilots accept such a substandard pre-show safety briefing when it was clearly unacceptable? The pilots had no say in the choice of Air Boss and no choice in the quality of the briefing but they did have a choice in participation. Does the rare opportunity to fly these rare warbirds cloud the judgement of the pilots and prevent them to question the lack of safety? If they questioned the safety of the program, would they lose their opportunity to fly these rare warbirds?
@charlesfaure11895 сағат бұрын
Yep. They need the airshow income to keep their hobby going.

This is the problem. As we say in my career, Everyone wants to be in show business. Air boss thinks he’s Ziegfeld when he is, in fact, Schmosvhitz. The difference is he’s not gambling that ostrich feathers will become intermeshed, but that lives will be lost. Meshugana. Hubris reins. And ends lives.

It’s almost unbelievable to me that this guy was allowed to be the air boss just because his father was? I’m only a 300 hr private pilot but I see the disaster waiting to happen in this air show. Crossing flight paths, non standard terminology, dissimilar aircraft. Why not just set up standard racetrack patterns at different altitudes and show lines? The crowd wouldn’t know the difference. I used to admire and support the CAF, no more. What a shame that good people and 2 irreplaceable airplanes are lost forever. Nice job explaining this incident gentleman.
@JamesDonald-bl3zpСағат бұрын
I blame most of it on the controler , he set up a scenario where those two pilots could not see one another at all , and put them both at the same altitude crossing each others path ,,,,where they cou kml dnt see each other

Air boss responses sound very lawyered up. He threw the pilots under the bus. So sad for the friends and families of the lost. 😢
@Darkvirgo88xx15 минут бұрын
Unfortunately for him the evidence says otherwise, so his lawyer coaching him is not going to help. He shouldn't be talking at all because this is so bad there are no words he can utter that will pass with the families or experts.
@Bill_Woo8 сағат бұрын
I love all this, but there's a fundamental issue that trumps every briefing, planning, separation, everything, and that is blind spots. Every tactic that exists is a workaround rather than a solution to THAT. That's not to diminish all important rules, especially TALKING, such as when it comes to even same-direction small craft who sometimes converge. Blindly!!
@Bill_Woo7 сағат бұрын
To be clear Scott is as much a national treasure and saver of lives as is Juan. I'm not diminishing every minute and second of this dissection. But collision avoidance technology should cost about $19 using parts from a electronics mix and match bin today. It's affordable enough that soon all cars will have it. Why not boats and aircraft? EVEN LEGACY craft. It's inexpensive enough now that ALL craft should have it.

That air boss is the equivilant of Englands prime minister and the whole show is in the same state as my England . Ask Elon .

It seems as though he was trying to create a bombing run with fighters changing altitude to try to recreate fighters interwoven around the bombers. An airboss should be a trained experienced airshow performer
@FlyWirescottperdue5 сағат бұрын
If fighters are flying through a bomber stream their lives are short. You don’t fight in the bomber stream.
@Av8or74 сағат бұрын
@ Thanks Scott, absolutely. I was thinking about the many WW2 movies where the enemy fighters are attacking the bombers. I prefer to watch them low and slow, and spaced out so I can enjoy each aircraft. Hopefully the airshow business has learned a valuable lesson.

(a) A person commits criminal homicide if he intentionally, knowingly, recklessly, or with criminal negligence causes the death of an individual.

Some more discussion and findings, thank you. But we already know the crash sequence from multiple videos taken at the airshow and presentations like this one prior to the release of the NTSB report to know that the "Airboss" should be liable for the lives and aircraft lost that day. Too much talk with little to no action in this case makes my blood boil.
