Yes, that's a huge problem. It's even worse in Colombia - there are a lot more cables and power lines but no obstacles database whatsoever. Last year there were a lot of accidents during a competition in the Swiss Alps - most of those due to the cables. Thanks for brining up this topic!

I thought all Swiss cables legally need to be on a database.

Even without polarized glasses they are surprisingly invisible.

In all the conversations I had with pilots before I went to Annecy, and while I was there, no-one told me about this supposedly 'well-known' cable. I was soaring this exact face and was lucky to spot the pylons and think... 'maybe there's a cable there'. As I flew closer, I spotted the cable. I was at the same height as it and might have hit it if I hadn't spotted the pylons first. I now have my XCTrack set up to show cables - in Switzerland they legally have to be registered and will appear on the map - but that relies on looking at the instrument (which I rarely do) plus they stop showing up if you zoom out too far on the map. In other countries, perhaps even France, I'm not sure whether this legal requirement exists.

why no red balls on the cable? It doesn't hurt the owner and saves lifes.

if it's a sort of cable car the balls would block the functioning... although yes, they should really put some signalling in flying areas

@@elgandozdamn..of course. It isn't a power cable.

@@elgandozNew traction cables installation have to put up a parallel cable with the red balls, I really don't understand why the owner wasn't forced to do this here, when this cable has already killed

The cables are used to bring food and other stuff to the mountain shelters, the other option is usually just walking up with the cargo, so it's really understandable why one wouldn't want to remove it. Putting a parallel cable up would also be quite a big cost so wouldn't surprise me if it was just unaffordable for the owner to do, the local government would have to sponsor it. @@booketoiles1600

Surprisingly, the red balls make practically no visible difference from the air. They are quite visible from the ground but from the air they just tend to mesh with the background extremely well.

In Switzerland, by law all cables must be registered. Still. The advice is draw a 45 degrees line from the ridge down and avoid this area. An 8mm cable is invisible until you don't have time to avoid it.

Yes, cables are surprisingly invisible unless the sun glints on them just so.

If you are a paragliding pilot just don't use polarized glasses to begin with.

I like them und you wouldn't see such cables with non polarized either
@larpskendya
@larpskendya 7 ай бұрын
@@E620SE That's not (entirely) true. I once dodged a cable just barely because I saw the reflection of the sun on the cable. With polarized glasses, that reflection would probably not have been visible. Of course, the are often difficult to spot with non-polarized glasses as well. For non-flying activities, I really like those polarized glasses as well.
