The CD soundtrack is really average, but the port itself (made apparently by Sega) is surprisingly good. There are not as many sprites and rotation/banking is missing, but I don't think any computer/console of the time could have reproduced the monster arcade system.

The port was made by CRI, who was also the same team behind the Mega Drive port

Again trying to emulate the Sega Sprite scaling monster tech of the day was an impossible task really. Great conversion but it took all the way to 3DS tech to do justice to the arcade. The best video games ever created came from Japan:)

Or the PS2. ;)

@@tatsujincorp yes agreed, the ps2 version is spot on, just love the stereoscopic display on 3DS that bit more.
I can see how much SEGA's arcade system was powerful. FM-TOWNS was definitely later more advanced system (486) and had larger memory. It's performance for gaming was not even closer to SEGA's arcade board.

The FM Towns Japanese computer has newer hardware and is very powerful however Sega's custom arcade board has multiple CPUs and very custom hardcore programming.
CRI made this and the Mega Drive ports of this game, and I feel both ports are rather average It's fair not to expect the FM Towns to look remotely close to the arcade, but compared to other FM Towns ports like After Burner (which was also done by CRI, I think), it almost looks incomplete. Even the MD port had the moon in the background in the first stage The Mega Drive port also felt like it could've done more, but it was really held back by a very small cartridge for the game (It wasn't even 4 Mbits/512KB)

The Sega Saturn Galaxy force II was outsourced to some mediocre game dev, had it been handled by CRI who had more Sega Saturn experience, they would have gotten closer to the arcade using the custom Sega Saturn hardware... MegaDrive was never gonna be close and the FM Towns was powerful but the Sega Saturn blows it out of the water in terms of game software computational power.
