FM19 Tips | Tips for Football Manager 2019 Lower Leagues

In the lower leagues you have to be ruthlessly pragmatic about everything. Tactics= simple and reliable over flashy and "fun" Players= Current ability > potential ability by *a lot* a 32 year-old 4 star over 3 star 19 year-old with 5 star potential, Finances = everyone has a price (for you to sell), and everyone has a cost (for you to keep/bring in). The player turnover rate is very high. Most people just do not enjoy playing the game quite this strictly, but the avenues and chances to real success are much narrower without rigid guidelines at this level.

One thing I've have found, especially in lower leagues where you only get say, five subs, is that it's ok to have a primary player be very good in one position, but make sure his backup can play two. Versarility on the bench is overlooked I think, and it can also help you in the long run if you bring in a D(C) whose not a full time starter for you, and train him and get him some time as a D(R), and then three four years down the road have a capable player on your team, or one you can sell for a bit more money because he can play more than one position.

I find more effective when searching for 13 different stats to search for 10+ on all matching 11/13 for example than 6+ on all matching 13/13. You may be missing out on a star player that just happens to have "4" on one of the 13 different stats

@@tomk98 I sort of agree but i tried to turn it on and i legit took an entire window scouting players and there were still attributes hidden on all of them, meaning i couldn't get any signings done and had to sort of guess based on what i could see. I wouldn't even say having it on is realistic, in real football attributes don't even exist, you just watch player and if he plays well enough times or does certain things well you notice it and sign the player, but no one is watching full 90 minute games of players in football manager, for obvious reasons. So i feel like because it's not realistic either way i may as well make the transfer window fun and not boring by actually being able to sign players.

@@markob53 With analytics now, only player potential, which is still basically hidden for teenagers is missing. So masking off is closer to realism than not. I mean, by the time a guy is 25, you know what he can do, there will always be surprises. So, ya, I think it's better.

@@markob53 I watch all on comprehensive, everyone I scout. Been playing fm16 since it cane out, I've had only 3 saves. Did one season in a month with Bolton (my team) to learn the game. Then I've done 7 seasons in northern Ireland. That's it. Been very enjoyable.

An extra tip: have a free kick and a corner specialist (also a throw-in specialist if possible). I cannot fully explain how important this have been to my team in terms of scoring goals from nothing. The key of my underdog team is to be the one who scores the most goals from corners and the only one which never conceded one from a corner. This wouldn't be possible without good headers, of course. And all of that thankfully to my 38yo LB Kevin Nicholson. That guy has just 2,5/2 stars, won't become any better in the future and will get slower and slower, but is a beast in terms of stopped ball. At important matches I always make him to the team so I don't lose the possibility of getting a corner or freekick goal. *don't look just for youth potential, chase those goddamn old beasts before they retire* (and give them a no-contract signing, you just want to be able to get rid of them if they start losing abilities)

I usually put the scouting budget as low as possible to save money and use filters similar to yourself. As long as your assistant has decent JCA and JPA ability, you offer free agents you fancy a trial, you get a report from your assistant and it’s cost you nothing other than your assistants wage that you’d be paying anyway. You also save money as you’re not paying for scouts either. Once you’ve built up a bit of cash you can then start upping scouting and what not but I think this is a great way to start

Something I would have added to this list is the difference it makes to upgrade your staff. In my latest episode, I've started with Stockport. I didn't set out to replace all the staff but that's exactly what happened. When you notice you have scouts with JPP JPA of 4-5, or a physio with 4....a quick look around uncontracted replacements and all of a sudden we have a physio with 16, and a chief scout with JPA JPP 13-14. Don't forget the assistant manager. Most players in lower league rely on the asssistant managers tactical advice, but don't seem to consider that (well, in my case) his tactical knowledge was only 7. Oh yeah, he'll be fine to tell me about players too, with his JPA of only 6. Once again, if you find yourself in this situation, go shopping for upgrades to your staff. It'll make a big difference.

I found having two formations (they dont need to be very different but different) helps alot. once you start losing a few games it can be smart to have a second formation to use a while, it baffles the AI and you start to win again, plus it allows you to rotate players a bit to help develop promising youngsters. Also, if you get in a loanee, try to loan him two seasons in a row especially if he is from a few leagues above, they want to release him the second season more often than not, and you normally will be able to get him for free, and then sell him on the next season or so for a good profit.

None of this worked for me. Did fine in previous FM incarnations, but I'm just about to get sacked in Feb of first season as Grimsby manager. Got loads of good (on paper) loanees in via team reports, but they are pretty much all crap. Would this be because the 4 stars they have is only the opinion of my assistant manager, whose JPA is not all that great?

100%. If you have scouts and an assistant manager who have low JPP JPA, you will make bad decisions with trades, team selection, and furthermore, continue to believe that your starting striker, etc, is just having a poor patch, instead of realising he is really only a rotation player, at best. The other issue you can come across is that in that first year, bringing in a heap of new players is going to be unsettling. Its almost intangible because there never used to be any stats for it in earlier versions of FM. I have found that you do get a period with new signings, where you get a dip in performance. That's multiplied when you bring in a group, and this includes loanees. It seems to last forever, but it might only be 7-8 games while the players and team-mates settle in. But usually, the losses and draws you experience from that drop in performance, results in lowered morale, which results in more performance loss. It's a vicious cycle that can be hard to break before the end of the season.

Tip I can add is setting your juniors to play friendlies against Premier League juniors. Huge income from gate receipts and snack sales as there tend to be 1500 travelling supporters to extort money from. I made a profit in a month where I played no senior home games

I love how I played a 5-3-2/5-2-2-1 tiki taka tactic in my save. Had around 84 percent passing completion. 8 percent better than the second team. And also 64 percent average possession 10 percent better than the second team.

Bit difficult to judge whether or not the team report changes anything when you have the 'interested in transfer' ticked on the scouting page.... Fair enough for making a video, but if you're trying to prove a point then at least make the comparison a fair and correct one. Would those players come up if you change the filter to 'loan, slightly interested' with scouting range being young players in the leagues? Who knows......

You need to check what play out of defense does, it actually make bad defenders better, because it pushes them to the left and right of the box. So on for bad defenders, but off for good defenders. There is one case where the style of oppositions tactics result in heavy focus on the defenders, this can be seen on the defenders pass completion, so some time, even with a world class team, I have to turn it on to reduce pressure on the central defenders.

I am not trying to take anything away from you. I appreciate your work. But the game completely changes if you do that. Finding players becomes 10 times harder. And managing a low tier team is a real challenge. I was kind of looking for those tips and tricks to be honest. :) I am doing a trip with Telford to the premiership in FM19. I did it multiple times with them and Carlisle in the past. Was hoping to find some insights on how to find good deals with attributes hidden. And again, I really appreciate your effort.

You should still be doing team reports. I did them religiously with my carlisle save last year and got them towards the champions league (didn't win it). A lot of these players will accept a trial which will mean you can get them in and give them a run against he under 23's which I regularly do. @@gaby14888

Yeah I got 1500+ players in my first season on trial (50-150 each trial run). I selected around 10 to offer contracts to. So this is a good way of going about finding players when you are a low league club. Reports I find inaccurate a bit, as you still have to scout players afterwards. I won everything with Carlisle in FM18 and got them to be the biggest club in the world as well (reputation), won the World Cup with England as well. So I am not a new player by any measure. I have been playing on/off since Championship Manager 1998/99 (20 years I guess). I have played through hundreds of seasons. What I was hoping for in this video were tips and tricks for an experienced manager as well.

You can get a ton of money to do transfers and bring in players and staff by playing (and losing), a bunch of home friendlies against high league teams during the preseason, or even if you have a 2 week layoff sometimes during the season. I mean almost like 300 k to bring in players for Oxford City. Thank you, I didn't know about the team reports. I brought it in a lot of free transfers in Oxford City before knowing this. I am trying to eject any player (except goal) with a pace less than 10. It's going okay.

I started my save Dulwich and passing into space worked for me! One striker ended the season with over 40 goals and the other over 20. They were both loaned in though with loads of pace and off the ball stats so they might have helped. I also signed Taylor Maloney and he was fucking quality haha

The star ratings are in proportion to the club. A non-league player in a team like Liverpool would be in the silver stars (1/2 a gold star just to keep it simple for you). The same player in non-league could be 4 or 5 stars as the club's scouts rate him.

I think one important tip is to have a fitness coach. At the begining of the season, you play a lot of matches and if they don´t have good condition, you started the season struggling. Also, other REALLY important thing are set pieces. To have different kind of set pieces will give you alternatives to win a match. Finally, I don´t find funny to play with all the atributes of the players already unlocked. But that´s up to each one...

This is all very well but what about maybe the Welsh 3rd division or 3rd level of the pyramid? A REAL challenge! Most of the players are not even paid weekly. Sure ok the basis of these tips can be applied, but as far as getting new players in... how do I get really good players with basically a budget of ZERO? ... need a guide to show very good players available to lower reputation leagues... and also how to get wonderkids in lower rep leagues that practically cost nothing to buy or to pay weekly, or almost nothing weekly! ... my plan is to build a youth academy and facilities and try to develop young good players and sell them in the future to gain some income while trying to gain promotion to the top tier, then somehow build a squad to win the Welsh Prem League so I can get european spots ... if i could develop a squad to dominate my league and actually qualify for group stages of europe i’d be in business .... probably need 50 seasons though!

Worst advice ever! pass into space works, and expressive works... not always down to having messi type players in your team, if your team is better than the opposition or you generally have a player who is creative for the league you are in, you will still be more creative, and your players will pick out players in space. you can't say pass to space is ineffective when, the lower leagues are built around the long ball, which guess what passes the ball to open space.

I guess what he means is that 'generally speaking' the players in lower leagues are going to be fairly low in most stats. So if you are trying to be more expressive, and they are mostly about the least creative bunch you ever saw, then it simply won't work. In fact, they'll end up losing possession. If you have one player who is super creative with great vision, then you would set him up with individual instructions. Same with passing, if you ask your players to pass into space, they are still required to pass accurately enough to pass to your offenses advantage. With poor passing (as you would expect from most lower league clubs), these passes to space will inevitably end up (in most cases) result in you kicking it straight to the feet of the opposition FB. That crazy midfielder you have with a laser boot....well you can set him up with individual instructions too. In fact, build your team strategy around him!

Guys I write here hoping someone can see this comment and possibly help me. I have a little problem on fm found in a database that contains the English divisions up to the 13th level. A few days ago I open fm start my career with a 12th level team and all is well, until the next day, all my players have been replaced by others, in essence the players I had before now there is none, but there are other players.
