7:56 is Applegate, east of Auburn. All those auto parts cars are returning empty. SP served the GM plant at Fremont (Tesla today); WP got the Ford plant at nearby Milpitas (now a shopping mall). Both NE of San Jose.

Yes, looks like the turbo was about to fail.

Black smoke indicates a too-rich fuel mixture, not an oil problem (gray smoke). Fuel control unit out of adjustment.

@@Greatdome99 A failing turbocharger would also cause a too rich fuel mix in pulses, as seen in the film. As the bearing alternately siezes and runs free.

Back then i had a video camera with the full vhs tape inside ( so big) and i tried filming calwa and Fresno Yard, some of them came out ok once converted to dvd, funny, they seemed so clear on the VCR :)

Yes. That's why I started out with the Video8 format, later with Hi8. A bit higher resolution which made for a higher quality digital conversion.

No, it means the audio was created from other recordings of trains and added to a totally silent video track. Voice over is added to an already existing audio track. Glad you enjoyed it.

Interesting to see those Rail Box boxcars when they were brand new, not rusted, beat-up, or covered in graffiti as they are now. This was also around the time when autoracks were in the process of being fully enclosed.
