Hey man. I watched all the vids and i want to say thanks. We had to study a touch of this Middleware Game development in a broad audio production course. All of us are comfortable in our own DAWs: PT, Ableton, Logic, Reaper...but middleware is a little different. We didnt get enough exposure in class and had to install all programs on our own student pc, including unreal or unity...which was somewhat a hurdle for many students for many reasons...price, time, compatibility, etc etc.... With this series i was able to wrap my head around the functionality of wwise, fmod, and a bit of elias, and understand how they connect with Unreal. Its not so scary when everytbing is up and running. On behalf of myself and many students in class, thanks so much.

Thank you VERY MUCH! This comparative is just so helpful for those (like me) who are starting with this, and don't even know where to begin from. Now I have it all clear, with fair input on how both engines work. Making a series like this sure took a whole lot of effort, and I really appreciate it. Cheers! Making this

Just wanted to add another thank you note to your bucket (You've already got a few of them here, you're probably bored of them already). Jokes aside, this was very educational and just what I was looking for, the combination of working in the middleware itself along with the integration process for the game engine. I've been working on mostly Unity projects, but it was still insightful to see how it worked on Unreal. Personally I think I'll start off with FMOD, it makes the learning process so much more appealing to the eye when you're learning the basics, and eventually move on to Wwise, because like you said, you never know when you're going to have a specific request for it in one of your projects. I also appreciate you showing Elias, it really intrigued me too on the innovation they bring, and it almost feels like it can be used for trailer works as well (although it's always better to do it manually, it just feels like it has an unusual potential for that, considering the tools available). Once again, thank you very much Mike, this is an invaluable series in my opinion for who's starting off. Cheers!

Hi, Mike. Many, many thanks for this serie. It´s perfect and unique. I agree with you in all. I konw both middleware since 2017. I think Wwise can be a little bit complex for the begginers. Of course it would be better to get knowledge in both, but... Thanks again!!

Waited to the end of the series to say "THANK YOU MIKE!" In almost 2 hours you have completely changed my perception on getting my first work for game composing. Seriously man this is exactly what a beginner like me needed.

Thanks so much for your work on this! It's very helpful to have a side-by-side comparison of implementation in each piece of software. This is the best series of middleware walkthroughs I've come across.

I haven't touched the coding API side of either (I plan to integrate FMOD into my custom game engine in the immediate future to see how it goes), but after watching this series and spending the last few hours playing with FMOD, the UI seems light years ahead of Wwise. It's honestly one of the best UIs I've ever used. Very performant and responsive, sleek and has all the features I could imagine needing. I also love the fact that the FMOD CEO personally answers support questions on the forums. The licensing clearly beats Wwise, and the documentation seems pretty great as well.

Thank you, Mike!!! This series was immensely helpful to me while getting up and running with UE4 and Wwise for the first time. You were very direct and clear in explaining each setting, process, etc. and you went about it in a very organic order (problem -> solution), which made it easy for me to grasp the concepts and understand why/how it all connects. Thanks a bunch!

Thank you so much for this tutorial series. This was absolutely what I needed when evaluating middleware for our game project. By the time you had gotten to the music system, I was almost certain I was going to choose FMOD but the music section solidified that decision. I am sure Wwise is a very capable piece of software, but it seemed like there were more steps necessary for every task and the UI turned me off. By the way - I'm glad you stayed tidy throughout, it drives me nuts when tutorials don't take things "seriously" and just leave everything with default names / no folder structure

You, sir, nailed it! I love the dynamics of the videos! I hate "let me show you again" tutorials. It's pretty fckin obvious I can rewind isn't it? Awesome job man!

Thank you very much for this tutorial series! I've been learning Unreal and up until this point I haven't really thought much about sound. However, I wanted to make a game for a class project that integrates music I made, and your tutorials made doing this a breeze! I very much appreicate all the time you spent going through both Fmod and Wwise, as well as the comparisons you made between them. As someone just starting out in this area, having an experienced person's opinion on the two really helps.

This is one of the most professional and high quality A vs. B video series ever made! Absolutely phenomenal presentation. Extremely clear, concise, well-spoken, great audio quality ;), great video quality, smooth workflow. You're either a genius or this was meticulously scripted and rehearsed. Based on the fact you already had the plugins installed during in the intro video, I'm going to guess you prepared very well for this series and it definitely shows. Amazing work, truly.

Hey man, thanks so much for this entire series. I'm currently on the final year of my bachelor's degree in game development, and ultimately what I love, live and breathe is sound and music, I always have since I was a kid. So my hopes is just that, to become a sound designer/composer, but of course as with many things it can be rather overwhelming starting out and it's easy to have doubts and worries. But luckily, you made this series and it's really helped me out big time and I just wanna say thanks for making it and being a great teacher all around :) also, funnily enough one of the guys behind Elias is coming to our uni tomorrow to teach us about Elias and game audio/music in general so that's pretty fitting, we'll see how it goes :D

Hmm interesting. I wonder why companies pick. Wwise over FMOD Studio. Is it better on performance or more control over the code? More flexible? I notice that you didn’t have to mess around with the waveforms as much to get them to fade correctly.
@mikeluna20265 жыл бұрын
Well, been googling about that too. People say it allows for more complex setups than FMOD (but FMOD tends to be easier, though not everyone agrees). I can't elaborate much though, since I was also deciding which to learn, but I'm starting to get that learning both is probably the way to go. Ah, here's a blog talking about it I if you are interested (but a google search might be better, since there are several): annesoaudio.com/2016/06/12/audio-middleware-comparion-wwisefmodfabric/

In 2024, can't the built-in Metasounds (in UE 5.x) do everything sound-wise? So, do we still need any of these 3rd party middleware solutions when Metasounds can handle it just as well?
@FTF965 жыл бұрын
How to these pieces of middleware compare when using Unity vs Unreal? I’ve had trouble getting Fmod to be stable in Unity before I can even attempt to use it
