Jane Montgomery, You still SHOULDN’T fear a GOP President! It’s those that “supports” a Narcissistic Monster (like Trump) you should fear!! There will ALWAYS be a Loony Madman/Woman in search of ‘Power’ walking amongst us but, without followers to support them..., they’re just a Loony. Unfortunately, for the rest of us decent and smart people, there’s TOO MANY Loonies unleashed in this Country!😔

Hence, this 2020 Election race is closer than it should be (considering Trump’s VILE nature and incompetence).

I hope you are right, but I am not sure about that. Trump is finished, but Trumpism? Those racist, divisive, mysoginistic forces that he has unleashed? 70 million Americans voted for him. I find that astounding and more than a little scary. I am not trying to be facetious, but how any human being endowed with wits and a reasonable education could chose that man is beyond me. In any sensible world, he would have struggled to beat Kanye. But he got SEVENTY MILLION votes. That is the country you live in, where at least 70 million people have no critical faculties, no ability to discern fact from fiction. Terrifying.

On one hand, I don't think ability HAS to decline with age. On the other hand, an 80-plus yo politician is making policies for a country they likely will not live in, and for people they will not live among. I've seen the argument that letting older people vote is akin to letting Americans vote for policies in Norway or China. I don't object to older Americans voting at all. But when policy is being crafted by elderly, wealthy Americans who came of age in a vastly different economy and culture, I find more legitimate reasons for there to be a retirement age for Congress.

McCain had his issues, as everyone does, but for me as a democrat, he represents what decent republicans use to be. They were people who stood for something, unlike trump who stands for nothing except if it will get him votes, make him money, get sex, fast food or golf. I think we need the push and pull of progressives and conservatives and the political deals which use to be made in order to get things done like Reagan and Tip O'neil. Now that's looked at by some people as being weak and it's my way or the highway and republicans have closed down the govt. several times if they don't get their way or just close it down to make govt. look like it doesn't work. Also you have to look at trump from his diagnosis of malignant narcissism and everything comes from that. He can't really care about other people unless it's what can they do for him. He will do whatever he needs to do to get his way and that includes lying, cheating, bullying etc. He was made this way by his father who was made that way by his father and trump's kids are chips off the old block.

Character is far more important than partisan values. I am a lifelong democrat. There is probably very little in regards to policy where I would find agreement with John McCain. Yet, if given the choice to choose between a person who has proven their character, but views political issues differently from me, or someone who says they agree with me on policy, but have shown themselves to be deeply corrupt, I believe I would choose character over policy.
