In a recent symposium organised by the Nagaland Indigenous People’s Forum (NIPF), various tribal and frontal organisations from Northeast India voiced their concerns over the Government of India’s decision to end the FMR (Free Movement Regime) along the India-Myanmar border and install a fence spanning 1,643 km.
The participating organizations included the Kuki Inpi Manipur, Zo Reunification Organization (Mizoram), Kuki Inpi Nagaland, Indigenous peoples of Mung-Dun-Chun-Kham, Assam, Manipur Naga Youth Organization, Nagaland GB Federation, Nagaland Tribes Council, Eastern Nagaland People's Organization, Chakhroma Youth Organization, and several others. Political parties whose members also took part included Rising People’s Party(RPP), NDPP, NPF.
EastMojo caught up with IAS (Retd.) and social activist Khekiye K. Sema who shares insight on how the government's decision to scrap the FMR has not gone down well with the people of Nagaland and Mizoram.

Kuki Meitei crisis that is going atm is not coz of open border, its a TERRITORIAL LAND DISPUTE between the two communities. If the two communities set their boundary clear, that's problem solved. We thank kuki chin mizos for giving us FMR N border fencing. FMR was never an issue earlier but the blatant misuse by kukichinmizos doin drug trade (everyday in mizoram),illegal immigration and pointing guns at AR in moreh was d final nail in d coffin as GOI realised the gravity

For those people who are asking are Nagas and Mizos above National Security? The answer is YES we are Living Human Beings which is above all things in this world. We are ethnic group of people and have been living on our land even before creation of India and Myanmar. We have no knowledge of the creation of India n Myanmar. Infact an imaginary boundary was drawn between India n Myanmar across our territory without our knowledge. Someone coming and separating us from our Land, property and above all our people is not acceptable to us. We have no problem of our people from Myanmar coming in our home, infact they are our kins who are entitle to inheritance or share ownership of property with us here just as we do there in Myanmar. Late Suisa Rungsung, a Visionary former MP, who later became a Member of the Naga National Council (NNC) once asked and pleaded with Meiteis to accept ST Status. He was humiliated and spat on by Meiteis. "Ekhoi Hao macha, Hao pang natte" "Eikhoise amaangba mi natte" Translation: we are not Hao, and not foolish like you or Hao means backward, foolish, Untouchable to Meiteis. We are not lost, man." Suisa was dejected but tried again speaking to the Meitei Maharaja of the then, but he was meted with a strong warning and dire consequences if he further pursue the matter among Meiteis. Suisa wept and wrote in his diary "One day these people (Meiteis) will demand ST status by then, it will be too late to undo things that are achievable now" No doubt, the present drama pouring out by Meiteis and its HC to grab the tribal rights and most importantly tribal land is an SOS call to unite the tribals to fight for our rights.

Do you really think it's about Nagaland only? Little knowledge is dangerous. Naga lives in arunachal pradesh, tripura as well apart from Nagaland arunachal also share the border with Myanmar. The Naga and chinkukimizo are the majority stake holders among tribes living in indo-myanmar artificial boarder created by India and Myanmar. First of all you need to know we are neither Indian nor Myanmariest but forcefully they led us. Can the Indian government bring all the chinkukimizo and Naga in one territory before doing fence because as long as the fence is deviding between brothers then we will never accept this. Just for one particular community suffering you can't led the millions to suffer. Meitei is so mean and ambitious nature just for their comfort letting others to suffer.

In my view, opposing border fencing is for argument sake and making stumbling block to Indian security arrangements. Because, border area of both side is full of jungles and very very thinly populated area. we can provide security gates wherever required. It’s all the same. In Nagaland people of other state are discriminated. In Indian cities the Nagas are discriminated by the mainland Indians. Out in other countries Indians are discriminated. It’s just a cycle of human life. Few say not everyone is same but it’s just the Bitter truth.

If meitei really wanna fence the border then border only the portion where meitei and kuki are separated also called buffer zone. Hugely because of illiteracy and ignorance, having a college degree doesn't make one literate in a sense, ignorance because majority of Nagas in the rural or urban areas doesn't understand self sufficiency. South Korea was broke .. became the poorest country after the war, not even a single tree was standing in their land but patriotism and self sustaining mindset overtook them , and they worked Hard.. hardest than anybody on earth .. and they become self sufficient.
