FN SCAR 17s vs IWI Galil Ace .308 (Tabletop Review)

No brag, just perspective; I’m a retired AF vet with very little 7.62 experience in an issue weapon aside from the pig. Post retirement I decided to add 7.62 rifles to my collection. They are very practical here in the Midwest for deer & hogs also. The two that I ended up with are the WW AR10 with 18” bbl & the ACE in 16.02” bbl. I have more than a fair amount of experience with the FN SCAR & nearly bought one. After spending a day with the 7.62 ACE, I fell in love & purchased one of those instead. While not (but nearly) perfect, it ran absolutely flawless with what I perceived as less or more comfortable felt recoil. That SCAR (which I still play with occasionally) just wasn’t as reliable & seemed inconsistent. Also, way overpriced & the young AD folks I talk to now don’t have what I would call, a love for them. Yes, that ACE may be a bit old tech & the forgrip kinda sucks but, it’s crazy reliable, more than accurate enough, & for now is priced ok. With all of the high quality aftermarket upgrades, it’s kind of a no-brainer. Plus, I would take it to war over most anything I can think of.

Those optics are a discrage to the stellar rifles they're mounted on. But an EOTech at least.

I fired both pretty extensively and the scar in full auto. The scar certainly isn’t a bad gun but I think the ace is much better gun especially considering that it’s half the price. It’s more durable it’s soft shooting just as accurate and more simple to maintain.

Most galil 308s are going for about $2500+ rn. I can find scar 17s for $3k. So price isn’t a factor honestly

Now that the SCAR has a non reciprocating charging handle it makes the rifle that much better and I’m glad they addressed the older rifles and now people can choose to install the NRCH into older models which is great but expensive, atleast they addressed it. Both are top tier battle rifles and you can’t go wrong with either if you were to have to choose. It’s all personal preference and budget.

I have a galil gen 1 7.62x39 with the plastic delete kit and it's my baby. I've put so many rounds through it, about 5k and only had 3 malfunctions (they were all 3 dud bullets, thankfully) and I'm eyeing the galil ace gen 2 in .308.

Nice. I like that the Gen II already comes Standard with an mlok rail. The quad style is the only thing I doing like about my Galil.

@@Avengenerd I swapped it out and put a magpul Zhukov handguard on (light machining required) and it's pretty unique, honestly. Plus since it has mlok points I can just add rails where I like them. This galil is kinda what got me into customizing a firearm to my liking.

I was debating between the scar 17, the Galil Ace 2, and the Springfield Saint Victor AR10. I think I’m going to go with the Galil Ace 2 taking rice in consideration and I don’t want another rifle that looks like my AR15 build lol.

I like the SCAR better, but the Ace is a great rifle. Also, there are SCARs that don't have reciprocating charging handles. I like IWI, but I would probably take a Tavor over a Galil. If you like these 2, check out the CZ Bren 2.

Can’t go wrong with either. And yeah, I have 3 SCARs, 2 17s, one of em with the NRCH, and a 20. The Gen II SCARs weren’t in the market when I made this video. As for the CZ Bren that’s on my list. Not a priority, but its on there. I’ll eventually add it to the collection. I’m waiting to see when these IWI Carmels are gonna drop! Thanks for watching.

both rifles are sick dude. i never really paid much attention to the 308 until a couple years ago when i bought my first 308 in a ruger american bolt aics mag fed rifle. I've had more fun hand loading and testing 308 rounds than any other caliber i own. bought the basically the same rifle in 243 and am working on getting a custom load dialed in as well. ammo prices are crazy right now, but i had enough components stocked up i can still load a really good projectile for about 30 cents a round. cheers

Got the Ace. Put a Midwest Industries full length friend on it. I have a Primary Arms 1-6 ACSS scope in a LaRue Tactical quick release mount on it. I own several other 308 rifles. HK91, StG58, 4 C308's and a MAS 49/56. All are decent rifles, but the Galil is my go to. The only drawback of the rifle is the lack of a bolt hold open.

How are your C308s? I bought one as my first rifle, I was so excited to have a .308 battle rifle, especially a roller block one. Mine gave me nothing but problems... First time firing it, wouldn't even fire. It came with a broken firing pin. After fixing that, tons of failures to feed, failures to eject. I sold it shortly after.

@@doc908 I never had any issues with mine. I polished the bolt carrier contact points, especially at the end of the tube, and use hi heat red bearing grease on the bolt and carrier. I keep the receiver clean, especially the chamber flutes and roller recesses. Sorry to hear about your's. I'd send it back to have it checked out.

@@JohnnyBGoode215 no but the scar has an ambi charging handle and also has IMO a better adjustable stock. I own both can’t go wrong with either honestly. Also drum mags are trash.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I also had the ACE pistol in x39 & own the rifle in x39. They are all equal in quality although, they have changed the design of the bolt carrier milling for what IWI tells me, is to reduce some mass in the BCG.???

None in the 7.62 NATO as I have plenty of US surplus. Tons of both in both of the x39s & I think the only issue was with a sticky follower on a new mag & exactly one failure to feed with the pistol with a 122 grain hollow point of unknown mfr. I sold the pistol to a friend as I prefer a PCC in that format. KNS is your friend as the x39 guns are over gassed for sure. You know, I take that back...I did try some steel case in the 7.62 NATO when we were running it in the SCAR. That wasn’t the rifle I purchased, but another. If memory serves, I don’t think the SCAR liked it. Hope that adds to your thoughts.

Just what I had at the time of making the video. All of my SCARs have suitable optics now. My FDE 17 has a ACOG, my black 17 has an Eotech 518, and my SCAR 20 has a Pst GenII. Thanks for watching.

Didn't see it mentioned in the comments. There is a trick to old school Galil reassembly. The longer nub {compared to an AK's recoil spring guide} makes it a pain. When reassembling: place the rear of the recoil sprig guide against the top of receiver's rear face. Put your top cover on ,then retract the charging handle. The guide will hop up and into place.

I have owned both. Sold the Galil. I couldn’t get it to shoot under 2.5 MOA. With a 7.62x39 Galil, that kind of accuracy is fine. With a 7.62 NATO Galil- unacceptable. I still have the Scar, though.

Was looking at a eotech with 5x magnifier... but tbh I'm about to get vortex pst gen 2 1x6 lpvo. Even though the dust cover pops off it holds zero very well even after taking it off and back on. At 1x its damn near a red dot but just twist the lever and you got 6x

Thanks for your comment. As I stated in my video, the two rifles are fairly comparable. Anyone looking for a well performing rifle would be happy with either, but for what you pay, the Galil is the better deal for your wallet. However, if money isn’t an issue, the SCAR is more on the iconic side, so people have to buy it with the understanding that its more expensive because of the novelty aspect. For people who are casual shooters it may not be worth the expense, but there are also others who are collectors. In their case the Iconic appeal is worth it. Same concept with firearms like 1911s, MP5s, Desert Eagles, etc. People buy em because of the cool factor and will pay extra. To each is own. Thanks for watching.
