Foal gets scared by dog at first and then gets pretty playful

Bravo, now three weeks old is getting braver by the minute. Here he first meets Amie, the dog, and gets a little overwhelmed, but that doesn`t last very long. He is now ready for some regular horsetraining, it's time to learn to yield to pressure and have a halter on.

+Sarah Evans If you want to train a foal to become an equilibrated adult… well, you have to do ALL those sort of things! If you don't do them as they are a foal, then when? As a baby, they hardly can hurt you with a kick, but if it was a grown-up colt… ouch. So better train them as youngsters, when they think everything is a game

Ramses NG I certainly understand your point. I had horses at one point in my life, including my very own newborn, fuzzy, loving, frisky little filly. That was a time. I had to hold her while the vet gave her her vaccinations, and she kicked the devil out of my leg but didn't hurt me. She ended up falling asleep with her nose in the crook of my arm. I'm thinking I would start out putting a different, not so critical body part behind my foal rather than my head.

For what it's worth I wasn't at all worried. You were being kind to the animals. Also, a mare isn't going to teach anything other than manners. A human must teach what the human expects of the animal. I'm glad to see she wasn't switching him or punching him.

She seems to have a knowledge of pressure and release as seen starting at 2:51 and 3:55. At 3:5 the foal actually moved over easily yet there are other times she isn't consistent about it which I agree, could get her hurt. Personally, I wouldn't be putting my head so close to the foal's either. They can sling their head back in a flash. And he is trying to play with her like she is a horse. Hopefully she will do more of the yield to pressure moves, she knows, on this guy. Nice foal though.

***** I get what you are saying. However, this is not simply play, this is expirimentation. Horses have very good memories. Foals at this age are trying to see if humans give to their pressure or not. Giving to this foal (moving away, like she did at 3:00. Remember that whoever is domiant moves the feet of the other to show dominance?) is teaching him that humans do move when he gets rude. This can turn into pushy and rude behavior when he is older. It is not like just because he is young he is not learning about what pressure is, in fact he is soaking up what he is seeing. So, really, this is THE worst time to yield to him. Mom doesn't yield, and may even kick him because it teaches him not to get rude in a herd of horses. Now the humans needs to do the same, or he just could. Getting a few corrections now, is definitely not as bad as when he is an adult needing a stud chain. On the positive side, I do notice that she corrected him at 2:42 by not moving and exerting pressure by that. It was a nice job, and because of this the foal is most likely a lovely horse, but in the case of a person trying to teach simple manners, this is where "dangerous" horses come from. Edit: also notice in the end how he had already learned that it was fine for him not to move. At 4:12 he put his head up and even turned his butt when she asked him to move. He kept getting rude when she got more serious. She should not have left it and laughed, because she was being silly, he was not = clearly a good time to stop yielding! Lol. Adorable foal though. And she is great in her other videos.

Can't you see how dangerous it could be to have a 2000 lb horse who, when you try and get them to move away, instead moves into you?

Correct it while they're young to avoid a bigger problem later. It's "funny" and "cute" because he is a foal lol.

Horses pretty much hate annoying running around dogs since they seem they as predators which is exactly what they also are even if one cant kill a horse so do they don't like them and could thus kick them which the foal actually was about to do at first, just so you know.

No it's not. It's a curious, young foal. The behavior is not abnormal in any way nor inappropriate and there is no reason for 'correction'. When you're introducing a horse, especially a young one, to something new you go at his/her pace. Not your own.
