Amazing the degree of engineering in today's construction. ( The Texas sun beats down relentless. Solar power and rain water catchment.)

One of the reasons is cool in the icf area is thermal lag. The concrete in the wall just averages out the ambient temperature. That is why they are good in the desert. You have cold nights and hot days. And for a house they are super super air tight... and did i mention strong
@chrisfurman4 жыл бұрын
The ICF room is also not receiving any direct sunlight due to its oriention in the building... With that being said, it should, in theory, definitely be more resistant to heat movement.

Erik, did the concrete guys forget the concrete vibrator the day the walls were poured? That's some pretty large voids at the edge. I had one of the original FLIR camera modules for the iPhone. For the money at the time, it worked well. That was 4-5 year old technology. The new camera module has 4 X the resolution of the older module.

The concrete was really dry the truck ran out of water they just didn't have a good service from that plant
Great video Eric I wish you guys were here in VA. I'd love for you guys to build my house. You cover everything. My church is ICF and about 15000sf. And it's always comfortable and cheap to heat and cool. Thanks for sharing have a wonderful weekend

That ICF room really cool, I think it be great for a placing gun safes and other safes for extra fire protection with it surrounded by concrete I am sure take a lot more for the heat to damage anything inside.

Our foundation is ICF's. the basement is extremely comfortable and we're in zone 4 at 5600 feet. We have in floor in the basement and it hardly runs.

Can you make a video on the AC and heating installation. As you mentioned it's very important to know what's needed.....is the self contained heat/Ac units good for barndomium similar to on wood frame homes on the roof.

If a house is very well sealed and insulated, does that affect a clothes dryer's ability to vent?
@lazylizard65324 жыл бұрын
It could. If they are built that well the contractor usually includes small vents to allow outside air to enter the house. Without vents you run into all sorts of problems like stagnant air and difficulty opening and closing doors due to air pressure. HVAC trades also target a certain amount of leakage in ductwork for that reason.
@HickoryDickory863 жыл бұрын
Airtight homes should have an ERV (energy recovery ventilators) systems to automatically control the intake of outdoor fresh air and the exhaust of indoor stale air. In other words, an ERV keeps and regulates a fresh air climate indoors. In cold climates, they would use an HRV (heat recovery ventilation) system, which does the same thing, but passes the cold intake by the warm exhaust so it can take on some of its heat before being introduced to the home. These are like the systems used on planes, to maintain fresh air in the cabin at all times. It can be really dry air in planes, though, because of the altitude. Not as much moisture so high up. With proper and controlled air exhange for an airtight home, there should be no reason for a dryer to have difficulty venting its exhaust to the outside.

Question: why isn’t the foam filled to the edge of the stud? Have seen other foam spray in’s that go to the outer edge of the stud and is shaved smooth.
@TexasBarndominiums4 жыл бұрын
Our walls are 8” thick. The ones you speak of are only 3.5”, which is a 2x4 wall in conventional home construction.
@bpdp3794 жыл бұрын
You are describing open cell foam. Closed cell should never be cut as the outer “shell” creates the vapor barrier.

@michiganengineer86214 жыл бұрын
Any ventilation for that ICF safe-room, or is the owner just going to use a leaky door? It would royally suck to survive the tornado then suffocate because you can't get the door open! . . I definitely agree with at least one other comment, a _MUCH_ better job was done with the foam for Matt's HQ building. Is there any reason other than $$$ to _NOT_ foam the full thickness of the studs?

To reduce sound, use two layers 5/8" drywall on all surfaces.
@jaxturner72884 жыл бұрын
Ya know sound transmission reduction and echo are two different things. 5-8 FEET of drywall on everything in a room could still echo if the rest of the space is conducive to echoing sound.

there's no opening into the ICF room other than the doorway. not really good analysis. And what will you cover the wiring in the ICF wall? If you put rock on it and someone unknowing dives a rail into the wall and hit that wire with no covering they're going to know it.
@matteedstrom4 жыл бұрын
It was a WAY better job foaming the Demolition Ranch Headquarters^^
@dustinmeier97534 жыл бұрын
Eric, I hate to say it, but the concrete in the ICF doorway looks like shit. Is that the same pour that the concrete company screwed you and didn't deliver the right aggregate?
@TexasBarndominiums4 жыл бұрын
Yes sir, that’s that same pour. It doesn’t look great but it’s solid. We are installing a door with large metal frame there so I’m not worried. But like you, I wish it looked better.

That is some crappy foam job under them windowsills at least get some great stuff and fill it in ( foam in a can )
@oblivionpendragon88364 жыл бұрын
That foam looks super crappy didn't even go flush with wall
@jaxturner72884 жыл бұрын
Iknowright? I’d want at least a inch or two past flush. Padding for the drywall. But ya know sometimes they do spray only one or two inches thick because that is all the customer wanted and paid for. Wonder if that is the case here..... nah, probably just a “super crappy” foam job like ya said
@dustinmeier97534 жыл бұрын
If you go back several videos, the concrete company he tried to use first screwed him 15 ways from Sunday. Late enough they lost the pump truck, didn't give him the aggregate he ordered, they had to pour with wheel barrows, and ultimately, Eric didn't pour that ICF, another crew did. I wasn't all that impressed with them, either.

@@dustinmeier9753 who is “them”?
@dlg54854 жыл бұрын
In order to fill the entire void out to the front of the stud would cost a fortune. That's why most owners choose to shoot only a couple inches of foam right up against the metal rather than to fill the entire void. That said, if it was my home I'd shoot 2 inches of closed cell foam around the entire exterior envelop and them add another 4 inches of mineral wool insulation inside of that.
@nsbconstruction96984 жыл бұрын
He has a metal stud and wood stud, there is plenty of foam over 4"
