FOBBV Eagles 🦅 Jackie quickly ejects ⏏️ intruder who dares land in nest tree 😲 2024 Feb 15

After a typical evening nest exchange, a sub-adult bald eagle followed Jackie to the basement of the nest tree. She had to eject it twice before it got the message.
Correction: we referred to the intruder as a “juvenile” in the video. The proper identification for the visitor is “sub-adult”. There is an excellent explanation of the differences between juvenile and sub-adult bald eagles here: avianreport.co.... Basically, a juvenile is in its first plumage, which replaces the coat of down while the eaglet is still in the nest. A sub-adult (sometimes referred to as immature) is older than one year and has replaced the juvenile plumage for what is called an immature plumage.

I feel sorry for the juvie. Not an easy stage in a young eagle's life, and the juvie was perhaps happy just to be around other eagles and as @kitkat5765 suggested, maybe get a meal. J&S, however, did not share my human feelings about the wandering juvie. Shadow protected the eggies, and Jackie finally had to resort to some firm lessons to the juvie not to stay in her and Shadow's territory. Thanks for showing us that all's well that ends well, SKH.

When Juv Eagles fly to a Nest tree with eggs or hatches--they do it for 2 reasons. 1) they follow an adult back to the nest that is carrying a fish of some type of food.(2) It's a previous occupant of this nest as a fledged Eaglet. Because this one did not exhibit the normal expected reaction(of a former nest tenant),rather moved around the basement branches trying to get a 'Recognition' from J & S--it finally understood it wasn't welcome when J became more aggressive and S chimed in to voice his displeasure. It's clear that this Young Eaglet understood it's time here has come and gone, understanding J& S are Current nest yr parents only. Funny thing. As a person, i completely take the former Eaglets belief that it's parents(that nurtured it and gave it life)no longer wanted to visit and find time to spend with it. Nature makes the rules for Parents and instills that message over many generations of Parent Eagles and Awkwardly in fledged Eaglets trying to reconnect with a past life.. Thanks for posting--good Cam footage on what went on under the nest(and above , in the nest).

The outside male is hopeful that he has a chance, there may be few mature females, and Jackie is an excellent, mature female. The competitive males won't give up easily on trying to steal her, but her leaving her young is not going to happen. She is vigilant because she knows that if they have a chance, the other males will kill her young. She may have already experienced this, Shadow is learning and seems to be more protective since the hatching.

Thanks for watching! I’m an observer like you, so not qualified to speculate on the seriousness of the threat posed by the sub-adult intruder. One can imagine that if the intruder actually entered the nest there could be a danger of egg breakage. I do know, however, that eagles (and other birds) roll the eggs to improve circulation of nesting material, to keep all parts of the egg at the same temperature, and to prevent the developing embryo inside the egg from sticking to the egg shell.

That's Spirt, if it wasn't, Shadow wouldn't have even allowed it to last in that same tree at all. And they sat together quite awhile before Shadow sent it away.

Jackie was the one that wing slapped it(juvie eagle) away on the lower part of the tree..lol Shadow was up top not leaving his duty while laying on the eggs knowing Jackie could handle it. She and shadow do a good job about guarding and protecting and fighting(wing slapping) when needed.. Love these two birds..
