One egg was broken on 4/11 and disappeared (possibly disintegrated) in the bowl. It is unclear if there was any development inside. The two remaining unhatched eggs are still in the bowl, but they are hard to see in the IR light.
Fiona (or Fast Freddie based on huge testicles) scamper around the nest all night.
Jackie and Shadow sing a duet at dawn and meet up on the Lookout Snag where they proceed reaffirming their bond.

🥚Jackie and Shadow are letting go of their unhatched eggs and continue their incubation withdrawal process. Jackie was last seen incubating on 4/8, Shadow did not show up for night shift on 4/11.
We have no way of knowing why the egg did not hatch. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.

Jackie effectively put a period at the end of the sentence and Shadow closed the chapter. On to the next installment of “as the sticks build”. Meantime we can enjoy Fiona’s antics, occasional visits from the duo through the coming weeks/months, and a peaceful waiting through the glorious summer. Thanks again, Cali!

It was more than love. J&S loved each other but it was the bond that held them together on cold blizzard nights. I still go to the nest as habit thinking what happened in the last few days might have been a bad nights sleep for me. But what I see is a cemetery where Jackie and Shadow buried the eggs that they tried so hard to give life to. I've always respected bald eagles because they are the national symbol of my country but I never gave much more thought to them. It seems that now I'm always going to be thinking......I wonder how Jackie and Shadow are doing.😔🥰

Life goes on. Just hope with Jackie and Shadow's mating that they'll return, lay more eggs and successfully hatch some eaglets. As heartbreaking as the result was, they've had eagle 🦅 babies hatch previously so I'm going to remain as hopeful al. They sing a beautiful love song.

Fiona is delighted to have the nest to herself so she can take her sweet time scavenging for goodies to eat. I love hearing J&S chortle again and to see that life goes on for them as a loving couple. Thanks, Cali, it is always good to see your videos.

The nest looks so Quiet and Empty now 😢 Before We saw Jackie and Shadow on a regular basis, Busy and us with Excitement waiting for the Big Day/Days. Almost kind of Eerie. Going to take some getting used to not seeing them at the same pretty much all the time. I'll miss seeing them on a regular basis 😢

To clarify your confusion towards the end of the video: In the first cluster of eagle calls, Shadow initiates. In the second cluster, Jackie initiates. Clearly I’ve spent too many hours listening to these two birds conversing, as I can actually tell their voices apart!!! 🤭

On April 12th 2024 Jackie and Shadow mated again on film via the Cam #2 camera. Wow, that is great that they are giving it a GO AGAIN ! Watch the Cam #2 taken on 4/12, they are roosting in their special tree that has no green foliage. I was not shocked - because another eagle pair did the same thing when thier eggs were not viable for 2 months !!

What you heard is correct, there will be no more until Nov-March which is their mating season. They are simply courting, which helps them remain the strong couple that they are.

They mate all year round but Jackie's egg-laying season is Jan-Mar of each year. It is too late for another clutch this year.

Kinda hate Jackie buried them, But I would assume if the first one was just membrane then possibly so would the other 2. I don't know. Was hoping to be able to be seen so we could kinda know for sure. But at the same time I feel like Jackie did it for Shadows sake 😢

@@lindaadelwerth8042 Whereas I think that when Shadow sat on the broken egg, it crushed beneath him and the foul, sticky goo caused the remnants of the shell to adhere to his brood patch. Then he flew away with egg on his breast. I think this traumatized Shadow - which is why he didn’t return to the remaining 2 eggs thereafter. Even if it didn’t upset him, I imagine the smell alone convinced him the eggs were non-viable. If I were Shadow, I wouldn’t want to risk a repeat of the incident - no matter how much I wanted to pay homage to Jackie’s contributions to the reproductive process…

Fiona (and Fast Freddie) are local San Bernardino Flying Squirrels (SBFS) that inhabit the tree; I think they live below J &S nest. They're acknowledged on the FOBBV home page I believe 😊...all kinds of fascinating history there, very interesting to read when you have a chance 😊 ❤🐿🦅🦅🥰

Who's Fiona? Is that a ,squirrel? It's a renewing now. They. Both are looking to each other for support over their lost eggs. They'll decide what's best for them and now they need to do some resting and peaceful togetherness. They need each other now. It's going to be alright, cause they'll go forward. They'll never give up as long as they have each other. BTW I think its insensitive and rude to film them mating. It's just wrong for humans to do that to animals.

Actually, speaking as a human being, I can tell you that I appreciate that the m8ting is filmed. The reason that I appreciate that is we know then the eagles are healthy, they're strongly bonded, and that there is this tiny, tiny, tiny glimmer of hope that there might be one more clutch. I guess one of the other nests did have a surprise late clutch this year. The fact that Jackie's pushing him off so quickly this year add one little glimmer to that small hope. They have to stop with the one clutch that is not viable if they hope to start another. By the way, if only Beau could watch these videos. Shadow is just so smooth! M15 is more like a cowboy. 😂
