FOBBV🦅Jackie & Shadow return To Tend To Their Nest🌲Second Mating Of The Day On LS💕2024-04-12

After one egg was lost yesterday, Jackie and Shadow return to tend to their nest. They inspect the remaining eggs, aerate the bowl vigorously and work around the remaining eggs.
Later, they are seen mating on the Lookout Snag for the second time today.
One egg was broken on 4/11 and disappeared (possibly disintegrated) in the bowl. It is unclear if there was any development inside. The two remaining unhatched eggs are still in the bowl, but they are hard to see in the IR light.

🥚Jackie and Shadow are letting go of their unhatched eggs and continue their incubation withdrawal process. Jackie was last seen incubating on 4/8, Shadow - on 4/11.
We have no way of knowing why the egg did not hatch. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.

Thank you, as always, Cali, for bringing us this beautiful update! And thank you, FOBBB and all the volunteers for bringing us the lives of Jackie and Shadow. One thing, if you or someone else can comment on, that I don’t understand, on the FOBBV live update it says the following today: “19:51 no Eagles in RT; 19:52 it appears RT2 is gone”. What does that mean? RT2 is gone. I think RT is roasting tree but what does it mean that it’s gone can anybody answer that for me please? Thank you!

Not knowing the integrity of this tree with the nest, i wprried over the amount of smow they got. And the winds. But, they did good with this tree and this nest. Such wise eagles, this pair! Is it just me someone who knows absolutely nothing about most things! However I was genuinely watching with a massive smile & felt great! No one can tell me that those two magnificent Eagles don't have feelings emotions etc. That was staggering footage both coming back, and in eagle talk come Jackie is like Shadow me lovely follow me one last time being so delicate and then you got that other eagle Scout I seen enough said about him! Always a pleasure to see S flying in with a 'Wonky' stick in Tow. That and the Mating stuff may indicate they may reopen J's Fertile period--but that won't happen with Eggs still in nest. Just by watching, I have noticed all along how Jackie had been leaving the eggs in a line. While Shadow left them in a triangle shape. Now that one egg has been deleted, it seem to me while watching the live feeds, Jackie has been a lot of what others have referred to it as fluffing around the eggs, while this is true, Except that she is going even deeper into the soft material leaving holes, w This could be serving three if not more conclusions, 1, Fluffing. 2, Aireating.(sp) 3, Covering old eggs with Fluff so she can lay a second clutch on a New Nest atop the old eggs that are covered with fluff. This might be wrong but it is fairly early in the Big Bear Valley nesting seasons, I think they both are acting like teen agers away from the nest ya know? This only my opinion after watching the pair for several years now. I'm Praying that they are given a second chance!!

@lalaa7814 According to Friends Of Big Bear Valley, which is the organization that runs the cameras on this eagle pair, Jackie only laid a second clutch once and it was less than three weeks after a first clutch. The first in January and the second in February, which is still winter. She and Shadow were never interested in the first clutch that year and never properly incubated them. Ravens then ate those eggs and a few weeks later she laid a second clutch. The biologist for Big Bear Valley says Eagles don't lay two clutches when they incubated the first clutch more than two weeks. I don't think Jackie will lay more eggs this year. She isn't fertile at this time of the year. I guess a miracle could happen, but I wouldn't count on it. It will be a shock if she lays more eggs.

J&S❤ You just know they've had discussions about all this. They're so in sync. Nothing has messed with their eggs. They are caring for their eggs - still, and together. There's so much here. God shows Himself through His creation(s). Each one is part of Him, His handy work, and for us to also see Him. I never thought I would get so involved watching something like this.. It's hard watching the live view and not seeing either Jackie or Shadow... But, the snippets of stills and videos that you and all the otehr volunteers have so tirelessly provided, have made this a wonderful experience, although we are all sad😢 that the eggs didn't hatch, its been so heartwarming watching the way these 2 are together. No, eagles won't lay a second clutch if she incubated the first clutch for more than two weeks. It only happens when something happens to her eggs soon after she lays them. Otherwise, no. And eagles mate all through the year. They are only fertile for a small window. She's not fertile right now. People will have to wait for next season and hope they return together to their nest. Sometimes a couple will split up if they keep failing to reproduce together. I think they will stay together another season though.

A female won't lay eggs this late, and she incubated their clutch for two months. An eagle won't lay more eggs in a season if she incubated for more than two weeks. Eagles mate all through the year, btw.

Jackie was very vigorously aerating the nest bowl. I was wondering what was going on in her mind as she continued to dig into it. It was good to see them at the nest but obviously continuing to withdraw. They are staying close and in tune with each other, as the mating would indicate, which is very encouraging. Cali, could you perhaps address the question about the mating. As I understand, they mate year round and it doesn't necessarily mean there could be another clutch of eggs this year. Interesting to watch Shadow start the cleanup of the nest bowl. It appears there is an ant infestation down in the fluff material he was digging out. You could see a few ants crawling on a couple sticks along the left side of his excavation and it looked like he ate one on some fluff at one point. All the while NOW oblivious to the presence of the remaining eggs. Best to get the ravens in there to finish up.

I saw the ants, too, when Jackie was going at it so vigorously (on the thick stick close to the camera above BearValley at 13:11:26 to 13:11:33 and 13:12:08 to 13:12:19. She was constantly pausing to stare and then snap and flick the ones in the bowl. I'm hoping they are just being drawn by the stench produced from the first broken down busted egg, and not actually nesting in their nest, that would make it extremely uncomfortable for future attempts... and I love this view too much for them to have to move!

It's so sweet how they mate and then sing together to announce their love and devotion for each other. In tending to the nest; I would first guess that jackie digging is fluffing up the packed down wet grasses to dry out the nest. But I'm curious, it almost seems as if she is burying the eggs within the nest, is that something they do?

Watching Jackie and Shadow helped me to accept some maladies. God works in miraculous ways. I also believe my family who watch over me know I would listen to animals ! The eggs are not viable, so it is only natural that the ravens (or other birds) would do their part in the process. There is no way these eggs will hatch this year, so best to enjoy the beauty of these two while we can. They will move on from this nest until she becomes fertile again, which is November-March.
