I personally think Twilights "idiot stickness" in this episode stems from sometimes we don't like people because of the emotional baggage we tie to them. With Starlight, the main six knew they were on a mission to save Equestria. When you a doing a job you find yourself a certain level separated from the task. With Trixie however, Twilight was still young in the realm of friendship and had only faced one villain. When she first met Trixie, she put Twilight and all her friends in danger. Then Twilights second confrontation with Trixie was something where not only did she watch Trixie humiliate and abuse her friends but she was also in fear of losing everything she had ever known, her friends, her life, her town. This kind of behavior scars a person (or pony) in a large way that would make Twilight more likely to feel spite toward Trixie. (I'm gonna get off my soapbox now 😅)

22:33 I’m sure she knows all that perfectly well. Twilight’s struggles as teacher often come from how to apply those lessons to people with shockingly different viewpoints and records. Trixie and Starlight are way less innocent, or even sociable, compared to most every pony in Equestria. They’re filled with more doubt and cynicism, so they just can’t believe Twilight when she says “Do this and everything will he just fine.”
@JBar6 жыл бұрын
I think Twilight forgives Trixie enough not to seek her punished, but that doesn't mean she likes her. Also she could be worried about Trixie being a bad influence on Starlight, as Starlight is seeking atonement by changing her behavior, while Trixie just says sorry and doesn't change herself at all

Well think about it... Trixie made her look bad, which isn't really a problem, buttttttt she drove her from her home, basically in slaved her friends, and isn't repentant. I have one partial explanation for one of the problems in this episode what is part of Twilight's problem with Trixie was actually the fact that she was hanging out with Starlight maybe she thought the two would end up causing each other to relapse or something which could then have led into some of her unique crazy as she starts thinking of what evils they could accomplish together without fully thinking through each scenario to see if it's likely or even possible as for the lessons were Twilight had to learn to trust her friends that actually feeds a problem you brought up in this episode Starlight is a former villain this isn't trusting one of your best friends who has never done anything criminal to your knowledge this is trusting your student who is trying learning to not be evil even if they don't bring it up very often it could contribute to Twilight's paranoia

Ok, I came up with another reason why Twilight acted like this. Celestia was coming over. Twilight always gets nervous when her mentor and idol gets involved. The pier pressure tends to bring out the worst in Twilight. Also with Celestia's behavior, haven't you had a bad day at the office? Maybe she had an argument with Luna. Although I admit the whole reason is unclear. Otherwise, I enjoyed the review, keep doing what you're doing.
@ambermargheim57265 жыл бұрын
My theory, it's opposite day and twilight does it because she's twilight, celestia came up with it so she does it, and fluttershy hears about it and try it out. The rest either don't do it or never heard of it. And 14:35 why is party of one there? That's a pinkie episode not a twilight epideode
@weebandgaminginc.75932 жыл бұрын
Celestia couldn’t have had a fight with Luna, because we’d notice. Haven’t you forgotten what the friendship map is for? It’s possible celestia didn’t get enough sleep, or maybe she was dealing with some stubborn politicians, or she’s possibly just exhausted from the long day. I’m not a pony of equestria, but I know it takes a lot of power to raise and lower the sun. Celestia can do it, but it still strains her, if only a little. It’s like a body builder lifting weights. On different days, it’s more strenuous, but it still puts a strain on. So it’s possible celestia Is just tired.

I see the fact that Starlight has to live with the guilt and decisions she made as her punishment. I think its more mental then anything. Not all punishments have to be physical. The how big that guilt is, the more pain it causes to that person (or pony).
@KuatPronunciations18606 жыл бұрын
the case involving Starlight's forgiveness was out of the norm, as every villain was punished, which does not always need to be between arrest, torture or death. Sunset is always compared because similar situations are a matter of remorse after the fact, but the difference is that Sunset was "punished" by the students with suspicion and had to recover with their brave effort. Starlight has been pardoned by her village in a musical frame and must constantly keep reminding the public that she feels guilty otherwise it would not be apparent since nobody acts suspiciously close to her. in case of guilt, for example Luna she created an entity to torture herself to not forget the bad that caused, but this is an exaggeration since we have seen that everything Nightmare moon did was 5 minutes of fight before being banned. The worst thing she did was to attack Celestia and no one else. Starlight almost destroyed the lives of everyone in Equestria and is legitimately rewarded with confidence even after brainwashing Mane 6 if Discord had done it he would be turned into stone after all settled. if she were treated with suspicion by at least her village, or could not walk alone to earn the right, or even do community work or a job under watch would be a good "punishment" but not what happened was the same as a child kicking a ball in the room to break the TV, pot, bookshelf and pictures and the parents to enroll in a football program because the kick was so good that it needs to be shared by the world.

@@koalafromtomorrow5656 I would say temporary banishment where she is sent somewhere and has to try to survive without her magic (she won’t be able to use it even if she tried cause a spell was cast to disable it) and once she comes back Twilight does undo the disabling spell but not completely, so she can only perform simpler spells instead of major spells (like brainwashing or cutie mark changing). After that Twilight will teach her on how to make friend but not for her own personal benefit and because of the disabling spell she won’t be able to force them into it. I would also say have the mane five not forgive her as easily and have her do some work for them, without using magic. I think permanently banning her from using magic is not the best idea since telling a unicorn to not use magic is like telling a pegasus to not fly

Meanwhile with Starlight, when she does wrong with her magic, she honestly thought she could make lives easier. Compare this to Discord’s deliberate pranks and anarchy. It wasn’t until the Season 6 finale that he ever tried to be a real friend. Firebrand, if I can put in my two bits worth, when you get the required amount of bits to retrain your guards, I suggest taking ideas from Skyrim's guards. They can tell who you are under 5 layers of magic, 2 layers of armor, and can shout insults and taunts at your race from atop their walls while you sit just outside the gate. You want better guards? Here's my two bits worth. Either retrain your current guards, or just fire all of them and hire expirenced ones. Because if a GRIFFEN can fool all of your guards with YOUR OWN IDENTITY CARD, WHICH IS LEVEL 8 WITH ACCESS TO EVERY SINGLE ROOM IN THE COMPLEX, (deep inhale) then YOUR guards are the most blind and idiotic box of rocks this side of the galactic quadrant!!! If anything, let your #1 secretary train them. They know less about being a guard than Silver Quill does. Besides, she knows she can kick flank without even trying. And she knows she's best pone by far.

While I'm not Starlight fanboy, I do feel that Twilight has a bit of justification for her feelings towards Trixie as apposed to Starlight. Even if as you said, Starlight doesn't seem to really understand why what she does is wrong, when she's informed of it she usually apologizes and at the very least she's making an effort to change. Up until this episode all we'd gotten out of Trixie were (probably insincere) words of apology and no action whatsoever to back them up. Twilight is well aware of Starlight's troubles understanding morality and is justifiably worried that Trixie is going to cause her to backslide, which is more or less what happens. Twilight definitely went about it the wrong way, but she had a point.
@joinmarch766 жыл бұрын
18:48 If I may, Firebrand, I feel it as only right to issue fairness in regards to Celestia's behavior. Keep in mind, there's a distinct difference between Celestia trying to console Twilight, and taking time out of a busy schedule to see someone. Allow me to explain: Celestia, regardless of where she is, DOES have duties to perform, even if we don't see em. Ergo, she's likely known for being bogged down with a lot of work so as to keep Equestria intact. Keep in mind, Twilight and company can't be EVERYWHERE at once. So, I for one buy that she'd be a little annoyed if she feels that her time is being wasted. Also, factor in that Celestia can see into the future; it makes perfect sense that she already knew that Twilight would pull a paranoid stunt like this, and feels that she's having her patience tested for the sake of someone (even Twilight's own) zeal. In short, Celestia has every right to be at least a little spoiled seeing as Twilight essentially dragged her away from Canterlot to waste her time.
@RedfurredPikachu6 жыл бұрын
You think he'd take that into account, it's not that she was being spoiled. She was irritated because she had to take time out of her busy schedule to do this.
@NeoPersona6 жыл бұрын
I think the reason Celestia was so put out was that she saw exactly what was going on, namely Twilight fishing for praise. Twilight said so herself at the beginning of the episode, she wanted to show Celestia Starlight's progress and 'how good of a teacher she had'. Twilight wanted Trixie out of the picture because she thought it would make HER look bad.
@joinmarch766 жыл бұрын
An equally valid point; a similar cause and effect, mayhaps...
@hariman77276 жыл бұрын
But why didn't Celestia at least talk with Cranky, who she knows from his adventures across Equestria, and from his wedding, which she attended? Or maybe a conversation about music with Scratch Vinyl? Oh right. The Celestia is bored joke had to be used. :P
@NeoPersona6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if it was even boredom, Celestia had that look on her face that seemed to say 'Not this again'. Twilight has always been a bundle of neurosis bordering on being a total kiss ass when Celestia is involved. The fact that she still is even after having been elevated to a position where they can be considered equals has to be frustrating for Celestia. If we could see her thoughts during that scene, she'd probably be considering giving Twilight a telekinetic slap upside the head and telling her to stop trotting on eggshells around her and to simply treat her as she would her friends. It would save them all a lot of headache in the long run.

the punishment for starlight's past actions is self-inflicted through severe social anxiety over fear of judgment from past mistakes and the possibility of repeating them. Back in Magic Duel, Trixie literally threw Twilight out of her hometown and took it over becoming their new dictator, made the townsponies and her friends into slaves (at least she didn't brainwash them), and later on made it clear at some point she wanted to take over Equestria. She even mentioned how one of her spells had the intent to make Rainbow Dash "writhe in agony" AFTER she took off the alicorn amulet, thus not being influenced by its dark magic. That one moment still emphasizes my belief that Trixie still had very sadistic intentions, with or without the assistance of the alicorn amulet. I personally didn't believe Trixie's "apology" for a second (and that could be in part because of the ending of Magic Duel being so rushed), and I think Twilight's stance towards Trixie in No Second Prances could be interpreted as her thinking that Trixie is still dangerous, given that Twi hadn't seen her since her apology, but yeah I can agree those feelings should've been built up a little more throughout the series. I saw another comment down below saying that maybe Twilight just has a hatred for condescending a-holes, which is a big part of how Trixie normally talks to her. I dunno know about you, but I don't think ANYONE would want to be around any jerks like that. Now of course Twi does hang around with another big blue ball of ego with Rainbow Dash, but at least RD's ego isn't condescending and more or less playful jabbing at times. And going off of what Lunacorva mentioned here, it doesn't feel like Trixie actually learned from her mistakes up until now, albeit rather poorly. And Twilight seeing an ex-villain become friends with another ex-antagonist, if I were Twilight, I would definitely be smelling danger from the mere concept of them getting together.
@thebeavpercabethftw96046 жыл бұрын
That is fair. Twilight was probably afraid that Trixie's influence would undo all Twilight's work with Starlight and cause her to relapse back to her old ways. Sure, she relapsed with the whole Every Little thing She Does fiasco, but that wasn't done with malice and is a whole nother can of worms.
@7Seraphem76 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's not unheard of for one of the rules for people on parole being not to associate with known ex-cons for exactly that reason. Though on Trixie, we don't know how long it would take for the effects of the Amulet to wear off. Sure it's magical, but if the way the magic altered her behavior was just tweaking her neurochemistry, it could take a bit for that to get back to normal after the cause was removed. I do think Trixie knows she went too far there and was sorry about it. It's just her ego won't let her dwell on it for long. And you pretty much nailed why RD is one of her best friends, while she can at best tolerate Trixie. While RD will boast about how awesome she is as much, if not more then Trixie, RD never does so at other's expense. The underlying motivation was solid and rather well done. The issue was they pushed Twilight a bit too far into being an annoying, insensitive, oblivious jerk about it to Starlight.
@thebeavpercabethftw96046 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when Trixie first appeared, she was just an egomaniac. It seems like a huge jump from that to sadist. She just wanted the amulet to outdo Twilight. I doubt she intended to go as far as she did.
@Lugiamasterbrony6 жыл бұрын
If you look back she didn't really care for Discord when he was "reformed the first time". In fact all her friends with the exception of Fluttershy didn't like him one bit. They didn't really try to help him become better. This is pretty much why he betrayed them in the season 4 finale. And to a certain extent I don't think she trusted him even after he was completely reformed. On a few occasions I believe in season 6 she showed that she doesn't trust Discord still. So in a way you can't really blame how she treated Trixie.
@7Seraphem76 жыл бұрын
Trixie didn't just become friends with Starlight to screw over Twilight. She was legitimately bonding with he and did like her. It was just she saw an opportunity to one up Twilight and took it. I'd say the turn around point is when Starlight mentioned not being able to do the show because of the dinner. That was where "Use Starlight to get at Twilight" began to trump her simply enjoying being friends with her for her own sake. As to Discord, true none of them really wanted him around, but at the same time, he was being an asshole to them all the time and made no secret it was only wanting to keep Fluttershy as a friend that kept him from going back to being evil. There was fault on both sides for that one.

7:52 I don't think Starlight lived in Canterlot. She was seen there, but that doesn't necessarily mean she lived there. Before the village, she lived in a random town in Equestria. It makes sense that she didn't know. And from what I've seen, Equestria has terrible communication problems. A small town might not know about the Wonderbolts.

10:34 I'd argue that it's less about suffering and more about penitence. Does the wrong-doer truly feel bad about what they did? If not, why not? Yes Starlight's childhood-trauma-motivation story was stupid but at least it was something. It gave Twilight an "in" to Starlight's psyche. She could sympathize with Starlight's pain and thus form a connection. But Twilight doesn't have that kind of connection with Trixie. I'd go so far as to say that Twilight just doesn't like Trixie, and that can make it harder for Twilight to give Trixie a true second chance. (Twilight was the same way with Discord, if you recall, so there is character continuity.) 14:02 Ah, but did Twilight REALLY forget all her past lessons about trusting her friends? Did she really? Because . . . I don't think she views Starlight as a friend just yet. A student, yes. Someone in need of counsel and teaching, yes. A subordinate even, yes. But a friend? Someone who is fully equal to her and deserving of her respect? I don't think that Twilight really sees Starlight that way, not at this point in the series. And that, I think, is at least part of why Twilight is so overbearing in this episode (and in a few others yet to come.) Twilight doesn't trust or respect Starlight's judgment yet -- and can we blame her? "Literally brainwashed a town", as you said, Lunacorva.

I know Twilight looks like a hypocritical jerk for saying that Starlight and Trixie making a connection was a bad thing, but I don't think she's wrong for feeling that way. I mean, people can connect with other people for the wrong reasons, and what if those same connections end up reinforcing negative and destructive worldviews? For example, back in high school, I felt connected to a group of people for their intelligence and ambition, and I wanted to be like them. Then, I got to see what they were like underneath all that, and I didn't like what I saw. The first person to tell me not to be like them was my overprotective, 9-out-of-10-better-judge-of-character-than-me mother. Maybe I'm projecting too much of myself into this episode, but aside from the creepy stalking and the judgementalness, I fail to see how Twilight was the bad guy in this.
@hariman77276 жыл бұрын
Twilight shouldn't have put a time limit on Starlight making a friend. Twilight also shouldn't have invited Celestia to meet the new friend without Starlight already having new friends. And most importantly of all, Twilight should have definitely explained her reservations about Trixie better than she did in the actual episode. Trixie... hopefully gets more character development. She gets a teeny bit better later on, but definitely needs some humble pie that sticks, instead of sliding off.

Nice discussion on punishments and Starlight vs Trixie. I get the impression that Twilight thought Trixie hadn't actually learned, whereas with Starlight she had first hand experience because she stuck around. Also, sometimes we have one experience, then live a while before having another, act different due to our growth, then fall back on the first mentality when we confront that original problem. I know, that sounds complicated. But take me for example. My politics (won't say what they are) are very different now than they were back in college. But I still find myself thinking back to those old arguments, knowing why I felt the way I did, and resenting the other side for what I felt to be ignorance or spite, at least on some of their points. But back to Twilight. She may not have let go of how she felt about Trixie, even though she'd grown and responded differently to Starlight. And by the end of the episode, she Trixie, and Starlight all learn.

It’s not hard to see that all three main characters in this episode were neither right nor wrong, the trope for this is Both Sides Have A Point. Twilight was right about Trixie being a bad influence but shouldn’t have tried to control Starlight. Trixie was right about others not giving her a second chance, but her behavior is the reason others don’t give her that chance, like admitting she used Starlight. Starlight was right to be mad at Twilight, but was wrong to ditch her and brag about it before being caught. A lot of people blame Twilight, and even thought his wasn’t her best episode she was clearly correct about a few things this episode, like not trusting Trixie.

10:25 From the way Magic Duel ended, Trixie snuck away during everypony cheering for Twilight when the amulet was removed. When Celestia is in town with the ponies from Saddle Arabia, everypony is suddenly distracted by Trixie's fireworks. And while it may have looked like an apology from Trixie, she also might've used that as a chance to run away and avoid punishment. With Twilight silently wishing her good luck.

18:42 The way I see it, Celestia wasn't acting spoiled on purpose. She was disappointed with Twilight for her obvious bullshitting about the absence of Starlight and her new friends, when she should have just told her former mentor Starlight had just become friends with Trixie and their tardiness was unexpected. As for Twilight's judgmental character after all these seasons, I'd say not even the Princess of Friendship can suddenly become perfect and eliminate all personal flaws. Her ill-fated encounters with Trixie probably made a far more serious impact on Twilight than she herself wasn't expecting, and it all boiled over. Moreover, it all boils down to the fact that, deep down, Twilight hadn't fully forgiven Trixie yet at that point. Or at least, that's me trying to get into the mind of this episode's writer(s).
@ShadyDoorags6 жыл бұрын
Starlight not being punished is bad for her character growth, not bad for the reality for the show. Sunset Shimmer also instantly learned her lesson, but we respect her character because we know the physical steps she went through to atone for it. Starlight went through no steps to atone, to demonstrate that she was actually sorry for her actions, she simply apologized and we were expected to forgive her. MLP decided to tell instead of show. Showing Starlight doing something as simple as community service as a result of her actions would make the story a lot easier to swallow. It doesn't even need to be the focus of any episode, just a slight detail.
@Lunacorva6 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. I was more adressing those who seek to punish the reformed solely so they can feel better.
@Revkor6 жыл бұрын
BOOM THAT IS IT RIGHT THERE! Remeber alot of fans hated Sunset from EG 1 but when we saw in EG2 she had suffered for those evil actions while also reforming herself that is when we came to like her. Starlight hasn't gone through that and she did far worse then Sunset. Which is why Twilight's reaction to Trixie in this episode really hurts Twilight because out of these three she did the least harm. and unlike SUnset or Starlight Trixie has an outside influence.
@eternalhikarinotenshi1933 жыл бұрын
Okay this is how I see it and as to why I like Starlight. Starlight knows what she does is wrong and is making atone for her sins by having Twilight teach her about friendship. She is like the symbol of redemption like a person who did a crime, pay the debt to society, and try to rebuild what the person lost while trying to make better for others for what the person did in the past. Yes the past cannot change, but you can change yourself for a better future not just to others but yourself as well. Trixie never learns that lesson, she continues to be smug and sweeps it under the rug rather trying to better herself and atone for her mistakes in hurting others. Telling someone sorry is easy, making it stick by proving how sorry you are is hard and Trixie doesn't want to try whatsoever other then just saying "I said I was sorry I think that is more then enough" when really it is not since you hurt Twilight, her friends, and the people of ponyville very badly and sorry is not enough unless you make it stick. Starlight actually wants make atone to that and make amends which is why Twilight forgives her more then Trixie.

Firebrand: "I am not a squeaky toy!" Pardon me while I giggle! I am also wondering if Goku sympathizes. Lots of other funny jokes here. I can't list them all. Also... I never realized how out of character Celestia's boredom was in this episode. :/ Heck, she'd at least have something to talk to Cranky about, as they already know each other! She attended his wedding! I think the reason Twilight was so distrusting is embodied in the later episode All Bottled Up. Trixie often refuses to learn from her mistakes, and denies them most of the time, so she doesn't always learn from her errors. Hence Twilight's seemingly irrational distrust that's not properly detailed in the episode. :P And yeah, I'm laughing at the ending bit too. ;) EDIT: I had a thought about Celestia's boredom: Cranky knows her, DJ Pon 3 is too chill to worry about Twilight leaving them hanging, and Derpy is too nice and friendly to worry about it.

Celestia's bad attitude during the dinner probably came from Twilight's behavior. After all, Celestia doesn't like it when Twilight tries to make excuses instead of being honest about a situation, and bringing three creatures who are quite clearly not even Twilight's friends, let alone Starlight's is just making it worse.

7:47 Probably because this is the same mare who secluded herself for who knows how long to set up a village, and had previously been focused on whatever Twilight was doing for the previous Season, and not Rainbow Dash. That's pretty much like expecting someone who isn't all that into planes to know who the Blue Angels are. 8:02 Holy crap, we used the same reference! 9:15 "In more ways than one... *nudge nudge, wink wink* Firebrand can't see this if it's just one frame!" 10:53 Huh, I didn't expect that. In regards to your question, if a person becomes too comfortable with something, they can fall back into repeating the behavior they claim to have overcome. Like, if a kid stole a cookie, but felt bad because him mom scolded him for it, that feeling would fade away, and there's a chance he'd repeat the action. But if he's given a punishment (like standing in the corner), then he's given the chance to have the guilt sink in, and hopefully come to a resolution. That's why I consider Starlight becoming Twilight's apprentice a form of punishment. Much like Sunset had to be rehabilitated by fixing the damage she'd done to the school, and be the friend of the Humane 5, Starlight had to learn friendship while making amends with the people she screwed over (it all happened over the course of a song marking the end of the Season 5 Finale, but it's there). 14:09 "Just because they've learned a lesson doesn't mean they apply it perfectly at all times." ... "I personally think these episodes have differences that are nuanced enough to warrant a similar, yet different lesson." ... I feel like you might be the slightest bit biased against Fluttershy there, FJ. 15:46 I believe there is a key difference between covering an object in an aura, causing it to levitate (magic), and causing an object to rise using an optical illusion (prestidigitation).

To be fair on Twilight's part... Trixie's attitude towards Twilight throughout this episode was really dickish, right from the get go, so I can understand Twilight's sudden shift. Trixie speaks pretty condescendingly to a member of freaking ROYALTY and twists all Twilight's silverware into a Trixie sculpture without even asking if that was okay. And then, yeah, Trixie lets her jealousy of Twilight and desire to one up her cause her to hurt Starlight's feeling, which hurts Twilight too because of how much she cares for Starlight now and was angry/disappointed in Trixie for hurting Starlight in such an emotional way, just to score a point against Twilight
