Many think choosing lenses is just about the ability zoom in and out. Or shooting close or wide! WRONG! "Compression" is one of the most useful, significant principles that will transform your photography and filmmaking. This video will break it down simply and visually.
I'd love to hear your comments on this video :)

Long time follower of you on Instagram, long time fan of your work, and very appreciative of how you kindly have answered several questions from me across various mediums (Instagram, Vimeo, etc). New subscriber to your KZbin channel, however, and am (not surprisingly) also loving this. Should I be embarrassed that as self-proclaimed experienced shooter I still learned a lot in this focal length basics episode? Well, at least I'm honest. Thanks for all of the enthusiasm and shares, and thanks for having answered all those questions from people like me who just want to get better and better at what we love. Still aim to make shots that look as beautiful as your MōVI + mimic + c300II + bicycle operator + sprinter bit! Would love to see tutorials on cinematic lighting, or pulling off cinematic shots and cinematic movement as a lone wolf single shooter!

At 2:40, that eyebrow twitch made me forget which Tube I was watching. 🔥 But, seriously, I can't believe this was uploaded four years ago and I'm only just seeing this. Most people will address focal length by taking still photos and saying, 'See the difference?' without much explanation. At this point, I've played enough to know that some lenses just look better in certain situations, but this offered a much better description for the cause. Thanks very much!

Great video. I have a fairly small studio space, and am using the sensor on my pixel 3 xl (not sure what it is) but was considering buying a moment 58mm lens. This video swayed me much more towards yes. Although now I fear U will have to invest in better lighting because right now I just use a ring light and mount my phone in the middle of it. I wonder if I can keep the ring light out of frame, but still have it close enough to my face shooting through it with a 58mm lens. I do mainly KZbin monologue style stuff, sometimes with a green screen behind me

Simeon Quarrie I want to make a cinematic movies, and I am in a very tight budget, I decided to buy Black Magic 4K pocket cinema, but I came to know that it comes without lenses, and I do not afford to buy several lenses, I can buy just one lens, so the question which lens will be the most usable lens for most settings???
@YoungBlaze

85 on a apsc sensor would be 127mm?

The reason for this "compression" or perspective distortion is not the focal length, it's your position in regards to your subject. If focal lengths had an effect on the distortion or compression or whatever, cropping into a wide angle shot to get the same field of view as a tele lens shot would result in a different look - it won't. It's not the lens, it's your position and the distance between you and your subject.
@simeonquarrie
@simeonquarrie 4 жыл бұрын
diotough simply put in the video, the different lenses, and the positional relationship to the lens changes look.

I'm not happy that you didn't even consider aperture of different lenses, an amateur will not be able to deal with these situations
@simeonquarrie
@simeonquarrie 5 жыл бұрын
I totally understand. You are right, aperture is a very important consideration. I just felt that compression and focal length, hasn't been explained so well by others. I've helped over a 1000 professional photographers and filmmakers face to face as an Ambassador of Canon and I know that even the pros don't always understand compression.

The lens itself isn't compressing anything. Lens compression is a myth. It's all distance to subject.
