The reason why the Stellia sounds bad with that Qes labs amp is that it's a current-drive amp with 164 ohm output impedance. Focals need amps with low output impedance - especially the Clear. When you use them with a high-z output amp, the bass becomes bloated. Hence the Beats by Focal comment. The reason why these don't get along with some music but sound great with other music is that there is a peak in the frequency response at around 6khz. If your music has been de-essed properly in mastering, then it'll sound fine and you won't notice problems, but if it hasn't, it'll sound sibilant and sharp. The (partial) solution to this is to use a good EQ and drop that peak down, which smooths things out considerably, though some treble sharpness and a slight metallic character will always remain. Just the nature of the beast when it comes to Focal drivers. The beryllium drivers really do have amazing resolution and are a little bit less colored. The aluminum-magnesium ones aren't quite there techincally though, at least to these Stax-spoiled ears.

I love Z's reviews because he's expressive and emotional about headphones, he has a wide throw of feelings and expresses them often comically. But I think his "pre" break-in listen to the Stelias may have just found him in a lesser mood if the post-break-in performed much better. Most stories of "break-in" is borderline myth, any actual break-in should be accomplished before the drivers leave the factory. So, unless Z got a pair that didn't get the post-production attention it needed, I'd say improvements were more of a psychoacoustic phenomena than physical.

A little good old tip, never leave the headphone pads against each other after use it on your head an do not use a headphone stand that makes them narrower, just angle them out from each other, when you can, as they are apart. Then the pads lasts longer and do not lose the stiff viscosity so quickly, but MR Z dont care becaus he have a ton of headpads in reserv ;)

Exactomundo! That is exactly what my conclusion was when I listened to them! These are the best sounding Focals out the bunch.☝ One of the best cans I've heard period. They are artfully executed and most appealing to look at and hold. It's the $3k sticking point that will keep it off most ears. Including my own. For half the price for Stax L-700s I won't miss the Stellia. For the Stellias are not 2X better than the Stax. Diminishing returns and price Vs performance gets lost rather quickly at the $3000 price point. Thanks for the video! You "hit the ball out the park" once again!🤜🤛

That said, the elegia sound as open as my hd650 but the detail across the entire frequency range is sooo much better and the bass extends far deeper. The hd650s are much more forgiving and relaxed for more busy/poorly recorded tracks. I will certainly be keeping both but 90-95% of the time I reach for the elegias.

I bought these shortly after they came out and it was love at first listen. I don't care about the unboxing at all given that the box just sits in my spare bedroom. The carrying case is really nice, but one of the elastic straps inside to hold your wires fell apart easily - not that it's a big deal. I will say that they look absolutely fantastic, better in real life than in any review video. I upgraded to these from Sony Z1Rs and Stellias are hands down better in almost every way, especially the amount of detail they retrieve. Sonys are wider and more comfortable (not to say these are uncomfortable) but everything else is advantage Stellia. I'm in a huge minority in that I wear these to the gym daily and they power just amazingly from a portable amp (Fiio q5s) as well as my tube amp at home. In 6 months no one at the gym has said anything about them which was kind of surprising given how unique they look.

It is significantly wider. However, the soundstage is not the biggest or the widest of the bunch, but it has BY FAR the most accurate soundstage and imaging of anything that I have listed to above. Any dynamic driver can benefit from being worked in. You have flies, suspension compliance’s that are mainly responsible. I don’t believe it has anything to do with voice coils. Many high end audio manufacturers in the home audio and car audio segments DEMAND that their speakers are not run full tilt for a significant length of time before full performance is possible. For subwoofers full parameters don’t arrive until several hours of operating time. I’ve heard it myself and so does every other person that deals with car and home Hi Fi on a daily basis. Not sure why there’s such a divide in the headphone community with burn in. However MANY people that speak against it are simply PARROTING what they’ve heard others say. The typical response is ....”prove it with measurements”. MANY of these people have never no experience with modern home and car audio speaker drivers. Most of them also claim that BA drivers don’t have moving parts. Guess what? BA driver DO have moving parts. Look at any detailed cut away diagram of a BA and it’s evident that are indeed moving parts. I’m burning in a set of Focal Elegia right now and I heard a significant difference after 6 hours. It’s IMPOSSIBLE to hear something for 20 seconds and KNOW that somethnig doesn’t sound right and after several hours feel differently. Thats not brain burn in. Brain burn in involves several HOURS of constant listening. I’ll give them 100 hours and evaluate.

The Utopia is intensely clear and detailed. The drawbacks being that they are so detailed and slighly forward/brignt that they can be shouty and fatigiung. Also, the beryllium drivers have a unique timbre characterstic that you could describe as metallic sounding. Whether the Utopia would be worth it for you is a question only you can answer. Very glad Rocky Mountain worked out for you! I was/ am very proud of you reaching your goal/dream and as you obviously know, I don't even really know you! For me to feel this way toward somebody/stranger is like Bill Gates getting a 0 on a math test!🤪🤭🤔😉😎😇

Zeos, is it too late to announce your candidacy for the 2020 Presidential election ? Some might laugh at that prospect, but I'm willing to be that your 3AM tweets would be a whole lot more entertaining ..... Thanks for the vid, big guy.

Zeos you can't talk shit about the measurement people when you have a sound demo rig. That's just as bad. Also I'd rather my money went into the headphones than their packaging. that's just falling for marketing. Step up zeos

I shouldn't have to beat a pair of phones into submission in order to tweak them to taste. For 3k, they'd better whistle Dixie and get me a beer, be above supremely satisfying on anything I plug into. I'm not feeling it Z, no matter what Gucci purse it comes with...meh.

Generally to assess a headphone you have to hear it, not make comment on its appearance. And by "generally", I mean always.

They're boxed exactly the same way than my Focal Clear... but wrapped in leather and velour/whatever, so not impressed at all about the unboxing. $3000 and they need 100 hours of breaking in??? plus they're not too wide??? For that money they should do my breakfast and clean the house to make them worthy of the price (lol) So, take off all that stupidly expensive and totally unnecessary leather and de luxe accesories and lower the price at 1000 dollars. I'm sure they still would be overpriced judging for your comments but at least won't be a total steal.

Beryllium is pretty damn expensive to manufacturer, both to buy and especially to work with (it requires a specialist technician, which needless to say cost a bit more than your average chinese factory line worker). It's why most manufactures that say there beryllium drivers are only coated, focal stellia's and utopias drivers are made from pure beryllium. That being said, you can get paradigm entry level pure beryllium tower speakers for just over twice what focal is charging for the stellia's, so i'd say $2000 is a far more fair price.

With the f... leather box and all futile details that cost a quarter of the price they could reduce the price of the set and even offer a nice stand that would fit in the f... useless “Hermès” style box like if you’re going to pray in front of that box all your life. We need to be reasonable. Guys today I saw a kid (boy) getting out of the college, around 14-15 years old, going to buy a sandwich with his colleagues (boys and girls) and he was more made up than a girl! 😜 Kind of a eccentricity like focal. Need to exaggerate to feel the outside recognition. I apologize for the example but, even those Bentley things should be reconsider. But yeah at least sounds good. $3000 🙆🏻♂️ Heeelp!!!!!
