Clarett sounds best to me! Such clear transients, even in comparison to the Apollo! The Twin certainly has its benefits, but in such a raw comparison you can really tell where the money went for the Clarett! Thanks for the awesome shootout!

The first time I thought the Clarett sounded better than (the much to much hyped and expensive) Apollo Twin was in an over $250,000 recording studio! Now I'm sure Clarett it does indeed sound better. Strange how nobody on KZbin "dares" to properly make a comparison between the two! So , the better functionality and superb Apollo Twin's software aside , The Clarett sounds actually better (and more open) , and it's a no brainer as to witch device you should buy , especially if you already have some brilliant high end software like FabFilter and/or iZotope for example!!!

Why not do a full comparison between the Clarett and the Apollo? It seems everyone is comparing the Scarlett with the Apollo twin and it's pretty obvious that the one that costs about $700 more is gonna have better features. The Clarett, while more expensive than the Scarlett, is still significantly cheaper than the Apollo and may just be a better value for money

I'm getting desperate since no forum seems to know so I'll ask here: in 2018 I bought a Dell 7573 2-in-1, and last week I bought a focusrite clarett+ 4pre. It keeps disconnecting. I am NOT having an issue with my computer not seeing the device connected; quite the opposite: it always shows it's connected, just sometimes no audio comes out. And not just when I'm using my daw. All of my computer audio is routed through it, and all of it goes away intermittently and without warning i.e. it isn't a specific sound or level, or number of inputs plugged into the clarett. It disconnects at any volume, with zero inputs or 4 inputs. The only way to get it back on is to manually flip the focusrite power switch off and on, OR going into my studio set up in my daw, deselecting my focusrite ASIO, and then selecting it again. Has anyone found a fix? I'm running windows 11 22h2 using Cubase BTW. I've tried: -Cubase 9.5LE and Cubase 13 pro -2 different claretts and one scarlet -4 different USB cables -plugging into a different USB port (I have 3 A and 1 C, all are USB 3.0. No, I don't have a USB 2.0 port) -cleaning USB ports and cable ends with a cotton swab and alcohol solution -reinstalling focusrite drivers multiple times -making sure all software is up to date -freeing up memory space -making sure the power cable in my interface is plugged in correctly -increasing buffer size -prayer -witchcraft It always just disconnects randomly.

Listening on cheapy consumer headphones: On guitar, Scarlett sounds rather low/low-mid heavy, Clarett a bit flatter with more detail in the pick noise. AIR gets the Scarlett at least halfway to the Clarett on both those counts, whereas the AIR on Clarett is not as striking a change, maybe because it has less work to do. On vocals, the difference between Scarlett and Clarett seemed considerably less apparent.

@@EdThorne I think on the guitar it is the transients that pop out much more on the Clarett. Also Air mode on the Scarlett sounds more like a simple EQ would compared to the Clarett and it is my impression that Air mode on the Scarlett reduces the low end while it's notthe case on the Clarett. Now this could be due to the fact that you matched the clips by loudness, but if you did that's right thing to do and didn't happen with the Clarett. If I had to guess I'd say that it is the antialiasing filter on the ADC input that's causing most of the difference in quality, it is still expensive to make a good one after all. Not putting the Scarlett down anyway, it's fine at that price point.
@nielsott

Question is, how much of the Apollo goes into preamps, how much goes into the DSPs and the extra connectivity. It is not unlikely that the Clarett has quite similar or even better preamps and DA/AD.

I got an 18i20 about 4 years ago off of amazon. I actually wanted a clarett when I bought the 18i20 but man is the clarett expensive. Sounds like it's worth the money though. I got the 18i20 to see if it was a good interface for me, coming from a beringer UMC22 (awesome starter interface), but quickly realized I'm gonna need more audio inputs than just the one for a mic. IDK how long interfaces are expected to last, but my next one might be a clarett 8 pre. Another reason I got the 18i20 is because there's just less red on it. I had a 2nd gen 18i20 that I ended up giving away because it was glitched out. Got it off ebay they didn't list the issue.

Apollo is the most precise and neutral (listen to the voice recording - very even mids). Clarett has some emphasis on the top end which might be pleasing on sources like acoustic guitar, and might be perceived as additional clarity... Scarlett is more on the smooth side / not that 'fast' - could be pleasing in particular on harsh sources. Scarlett with 'Air' sounds almost like Clarett w/o 'Air'. Clarett with 'Air' is clearly over the top for my taste...

Honestly, I think the Apollo accents the low mids a lot more and sounds duller in the top end as well. However, it does sound warmer and more "analog' than the other two. I guess it comes down to individual taste but to me, the Clarett sounds better overall.

This is VERY true!! Ive mastered songs in Analog by running a signal from my main workstation(Scarlett 1st gen) , through an Analog compressor, and then to the Scarlett(2i2 1st gen) preamps for years. The sound I got from the Scarlett preamps in a mastering situation (with no processing) is shockingly good to say the least. Musical with a decent bottom end. I wasn't expecting those results when I first started mastering with it. This discovery is slept on with the Scarlett. I've recently done some updates to my interfaces, but my 2nd workstation still uses the 2i2, which is now a 2nd gen Scarlett.

Hi George. Are you using a dynamic mic such as the SM7b? The Clarett is limited to 57dB input gain which isn’t much for a mic like that. It should be plenty for a condenser though so maybe there’s a fault with the device. Also, consider proximity (especially if using a dynamic).

In my opinion, the Claratt with an air on sound full, clean/clear than the Apollo, but without air on they are hard too tell the difference. I was thinking about buying Apollo or Clara and now I got my twin x quad, but having a few issue with popping and crackling sounds while listening to music or KZbin will have to disable the c-state in BIO for windows. But when recording, I still got popping sound without using any plugins from the uad console but just 3-5 other 3rd party plugins like bx, waves with 1-5 latency. Was thinking about return and get the claratt instead.

I would agree with your assessment on the sound there. I’ve not heard of this problem before with an Apollo but I have heard a lot of complaints about it with Windows unfortunately. Have you checked if the Sample rate you’re recording at through the Apollo (you can find this in settings in Console) matches the sample rate you’re recording at in your DAW? If there’s a sample rate discrepancy, that may cause popping as the processsors struggle to keep up with the conversion.

The Clarett sure has "more air" but I'm not sure if that's actual real sound difference or just different processing/eq in the analog section (the difference was too big to be explained by AD alone). I was surprised to find so much difference between the Scarlett and Clarett.

I just purchased Focusrite Solo 3rd Gen and when I GO LIVE on FB (or just record in Quicktime) the sound only comes out the left side. I understand that this happens because the Focusrite Solo considers input 1 (XLR) to be the left channel and input 2 (1/4 inch) to be the right channel. Now this would be an easy fix in post with any DAW because I can process the final output in Mono however because I GO LIVE and I dont have the option to fix in post (because it is LIVE) How can I get the live audio on the left and right side of the recording when recording live?

Where is the video comparison Apollo vs clarett?
@elrapanda
@elrapanda 4 жыл бұрын
Brands makes cheaper hardware sounds "better" than expensive hardware to sell more, but is not better only more "clear", and is because the high frequencies are boosted up a bit, if you record a single voice is not bad, but when you record a whole song with the same interface and all your instruments sound like that you have a problem in the high frequencies, it makes you spend a lot of time fixing it, pro interfaces don't sound better, they sound right and are designed to get a better sound with many takes and channels, when you compare two or more preamps or interfaces, you need put attention in a few things, thickness of the sound, "sharpness" they need to be neutral to get a better result, dynamic range, max spl etc. Sorry if my English aint super good, is my third language. Peace

@@elrapanda Also there is no way we know that guitar was recorded at the same angle, with the same attack, with the same distance from the soundhole to the mic - because just a bit of change in those parameters would somewhat change the final sound. There's obviously more to it than just an audio interface, like a good microphone for example, which will make a bigger difference, as well what are you recording ? Will you need more than 24bit/48kHz ? probably not !!! you'll obviously be using equalizers, compressors and saturation during your mix and that will have significant effect on how your sound turns out and with a good microphone, the scarlett at 24bit/48kHz is all you'll need for an acoustic recording. As well the focusrite audio interfaces are well built and they should last you a while.

These both have the same Direct Monitoring feature for zero latency where you can mix a direct return of your dry input audio with your Daw input. @@marcusstrymon693 The Direct Monitoring on the Scarlett (and I think Clarett) assumes input 1 is Left and 2 is Roght.
