Great real life video Richard as others have said been able to lift huge loose beet without damage is the key. Best to speak to who you want to harvest first for their opinions. Re covering with straw blower best upto a foot deep. Good luck

Great Video, that Solo axle was a pretty sharp bend! I'm not a fodder beet expert but i've been aware of it in NZ since i was at high school! I viewed a KZbin Video which said it was the cheapest option to pasture, also it said some farmers are feeding it from February to October behind a hot wire, yields in NZ can be up to 30 ton (30000 kg) /ha thanks for sharing

We use an old sprayer for applying chemical to our beet. Keeps things separate and saves on cleaning out all the time. Best seedbed prep we found was subsoil November time, then plough/press a few days before drilling. Granted its light land
@bobcrawford2105 Жыл бұрын
Years ago fodder beet was hard to harvest mechanically because they grew out of ground high so when machine came to cut tops off they pushed over. But varieties will have changed and will grow deeper in ground like sugar beet

Great video Richard, cowfarmerdan just up the road from here goes through varietys on his beet videos, your need a little seeder on back of the old Ford or that little John deere for drilling it.

I supply quite a lot of fodder beet seed and Robbos and Jamon are the most popular varieties. Jamon will yield more fresh weight but Robbos more dry matter. I usually recommend Jamon for sheep farmers that will graze and lift and Robbos just for liftng, it keeps much better once lifted. Don't try Fieldher its more like a mangle, hard to lift and doesn't keep. Higher dry matter ones like Brick often need chopping and more roughed skinned so don't come up very clean on some land.

Great vid , match your variety to your soil. Light land use beet that grow in the ground like magnum (red in colour) which has a high dry matter .heavy land grow beet that will grow out of the soil like kyros ,more yellow in colour like the big one the kiwi was holding .
@w056007568 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree about the choice of variety for the reasons stated in this comment, high dry matter is important and roots suffer less mechanical damage at lifting time. Try to lift beet when soil conditions are such (dry) that the beet go into store as clean as possible to limit soil cones and overheating. Weed control can be pretty difficult as the crop can initially be slow to germinate and develop - locally the saying is that the crop should Meet in the Row by Lincoln Show (late June)

Have a look at Cow Farmer Dan on KZbin Richard, he's from down south somewhere, small farmer & grows his own fodder beet, just him & his Dad & lift them as & when they need them for their cattle. Knowledgeable bloke, should be able to point you in right direction with fodder beet & has a vintage Massey collection as well.

With regards to spraying your better off having a 2nd sprayer available. Doesn't take much to hurt beet after spraying cereals.

Nice video Rich. A farm down the road from me strip grazes fodder beet. It grows high out of the ground (sorry don't know the variety) but the beef stock love it and eat it right down low so not much waste. Try checking out Farmer Phil and Cow Farmer Dan on utube they both grow it.

I used to grow fodder beet 20 years ago. Lots of chicken muck gets the beet big ! Try and find a variety that sits deeper in the soul soil as harvesting can be an issue

We have grown Robbus good reliable variety.Growing beet is quite a bit of hassle, sprayer has to be super clean,you want to know who is going to lift it before you plant it so you can get the right Row widths.We usually only plant the middle of the field with beet and put spring oats around headland so easy to harvest beet once oats are out of the way.Lots to think about.
@bobcrawford2105 Жыл бұрын

Just wondered how growing fodder beet stacks up against buying beet pulp from Newark. I know other things come into play as well like being a break crop and cash flow etc. no idea of costs just wondered.
