Foghorn Stringband - Way Down In North Carolina - 2023 Cunningham Guitar Raffle

In spring of 2023, The Handmade Music School at The Floyd Country Store & Southwest Virginia luthier Jackson Cunningham are offering a chance to win one of Jackson’s beautiful custom-made guitars to benefit programming at The Handmade Music School.
The guitar was handmade in Jackson Cunningham’s workshop in Grayson County, Virginia. It is a faithful recreation inspired by the classic steel string models from the early 1930s. This is a versatile guitar masterfully built with a responsive tone. It is very adaptable to playing many styles of music from flat-picking old-time and bluegrass to fingerpicking blues and is a wonderful guitar for backing up an instrumentalist or accompanying vocals.

Thanks! I got introduced to bluegrass back in college in the early 70s. My buddy's dad was a very prolific fiddler and my buddy was just amazing on guitar. I never heard him play a bad note and I never heard him sing a bad note. And even though it's a cliche I loved the "picking and grinning" energy that's always been a hallmark of bluegrass. The thing is, lately some of the progressive "bluegrass" groups that I follow just do NOT have that same joy. YOU guys DO have that classic picking and grinning energy. And I love it! 😀

Common misconception, but this is actually old-time Appalachian string band music (coloquially known as just "old-time music") Very much related to bluegrass as it's one of the main influences that merged together to create bluegrass. These guys are definitely a very solid embodiment of the pickin' and grinin' part of the music! They really capture and exude the joy that most of us pickers feel when we play! Haven't managed to catch them live yet but they've got a few full concert videos floating around here and they put on a great live show! source: Professional bluegrass and old-time musician for the last 5 years, and a hobbyist for another 6 years before that!

You listen to the music - always just so....well, it's perfect. A natural, easy perfection from musicians so familiar with their instruments. But I always become fixed on their personalities (or perhaps at least, their visual personalities - what you see as they perform). Such a distinct foursome. Caleb, relaxed but with a twinkle of devilment always in his eye. Sammy snaps and kicks with that fiddle, it's like he takes bites as he pushes to centre then falls back again, happy with the boisterous sound he left in his wake. Reeb, the coolest guitarist I think I've ever seen. Just such a distant yet peaceful gaze as she plays, an almost spiritual presence. The anchor that keeps things zen. And Nadine. What a force. Not as often in the foreground but never unseen. Her forever smile, her love of her instrument. The head held high as she feels the mood and holds the beat What a beguiling foursome.

Floyd Country Store is in Floyd Virginia. It’s the Bluegrass Capital of the World. It’s a great little town. The General Store does have a stage and dance floor. Live music Saturday nights maybe Friday too. Nice people there as well.
