Ok, so I only heard this explanation once, so it might not be totally accurate, but should give you the gist. I believe they were once called just something like "comedy group" or "comedy trio." And they were talking about what they could rename themselves. And somehow they came up with these 3 names that represented something about themselves, and put them together: Foil, which is a type of literary character who helps to show another character to advantage (Like Watson to Sherlock Holmes) Arms, because he's quite demonstrative with waving his arms about when he talks Hog, because he can be a bit of a scene stealer and hog the limelight
