There is NO ELECTRIC Starter! - It has a "shower of Sparks booster Magneto" that is cranked vividly by hand and as he got the mixture just right and as he positioned the crank and pistons just right by turning the prop, he got it fired off with NO STARTER. It does Not Always Work but most of the time if one is familiar with the whole thing. In general it made them hand-prop-easy but on a cold day you would not get it running the way he demonstrated so nicely. Regards from Alaska! - Thanks for posting.

+Phil Vorgias That's not priming I do there Phil, it's the handairpump for the fueltank wich needs to be pressurized.
@brucebear16 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is an air compressor on the engine camshaft that provides the pressure in flight. The fuel pressure must be pumped by hand to start.

@dvonrock Yes, Netherlands. Antony Fokker was a Dutch engineer.
@rodparsons5216 жыл бұрын
Antony Fokker, the opportunistic owner of the Fokker company, was a talented self-taught pilot, but never an engineer except in his own imagination. Rheinhold Platz the designer of the D.VII, (and the Dr.1, the E.V/D.VIII and the post war F.VII Tri-Motor to name only a few of the forty or so aircraft he designed for the company), was German.

The D-7's were so admired and routinely feared by the allies as part of the surrender terms in Nov 1918 the Germans had to hand all the D-7's over to them.

I was unaware the DVII had a starter motor.
@brucebear16 жыл бұрын
They had a "wiggle magneto" (probably more technically accurately called a pulse magneto). You prime, set the piston in the cylinder to the proper position, and energize the mag. It should "pop off" that one cylinder, spin the engine over, and start. It does not have a starter motor.

@kaa13 Thanks. Though some people like to deny it, the Entente had more men and resources at their disposal and there's no way the Central Powers could have won the war even without the americans joining the fight. Germany's home front was practically in a state of revolution and once the troops returned home after the armistice they had their hands full. I think that by early 1918 Germany had lost a lot of experience pilots too and many of their aces were dead, including the Red Baron.

It has a windup in the cockpit magneto set up. Hard to describe . No battery.
@whalesong9992 жыл бұрын
Basically, one primes the engine by turning the prop with a rich mixture, then sets the correct piston into position for ignition activation, then the magneto is wound up and let free to shower sparks and the correct cylinder pops off with others following. I used to see them start the DVII at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome this way - occasionally the prop might bounce backwards before it pops off in the correct time and spins to life. Quite amazing to watch.
