Nice corn planter! My dad's Massey Furguson 4 row planter would look like a toy.

Travis just wondering why do you leave the marker arms on the planter, now that you are set up to plant by GPS. I would think less weight on the planter less compaction in the field.
@TheRestOfTheStory
@TheRestOfTheStory 6 жыл бұрын
It's the opposite. If we took the arms off we'd have to put tractor wieights on the end of the planter to keep the row units in the ground. I still use them off and on throughout the season for various reasons so I'd rather have the arms.

Not sure. If anything other than a deere I'd consider a white planter.

Your grandfather definitely had some foresight in deciding to build the machine shed as large as he did. I have no idea what he would have thought of a 12-row planter, nor do I know what size equipment he used when he first bought the farms you now operate so many decades ago. Needless to say, it was much smaller than what you're using now, or even what you were using a few years ago. There may come a time when you and/or the equipment outgrows the shed, but that time is not now. It's impressive to see that piece of equipment folded out and yet still fully enclosed, away from the elements.

I agree with everything you said except the part about taking the cab off. It might be the one creature comfort the 4020 actually has, and in their climate, it would be a precious and useful one to keep. A Soundgard cab it's not, but it's still better than open station in the elements.

I'm well aware of all of that. It was Dwight's father-in-law (Grandpa Keen) who bought and owned it. I grew up a couple hundred miles north of them along the same highway (35) that runs by their main farm. As long as they're still using the 4020 and not treating it like a lawn ornament, they'll probably keep that cab on it. It definitely doesn't match, but they seem to be function over form guys for the most part, as far as I can tell. (Not trying to start any online beef with anyone, just stating what I know and/or think, for the record. No ill will implied.)

Matthew Hoag the best thing to do is let the people who own it decide what they will do with what piece of equipment. No one knows for sure what they are thinking and doing. No one can say. It has to be frustrating for any of these guys to have to listen to the you tube fans say. You should do this or you should do that or you should buy this or they are going to this or they will never do that. That is the main reason I would never post videos here. Maybe the you tube fans could let them tell us what they are going to do. It's fine to have an opinion but no one knows what someone else is going to do.

Fair enough, Jeff. I agree. It's not my equipment and certainly never will be my decision. Like anyone else here, I'm only going by what I've witnessed them say in their videos, and for all I know I could be misinterpreting things, so take my posts and comments like anyone else's with a grain of salt. Again, I'm not trying to start anything with anyone. Sorry to get carried away with it.

No offense taken, and like I said to Jeff, I'm definitely no insider, just a fan like everyone else. I live in the Des Moines area now, which is a little bit nicer in terms of climate, although the wind is worse. Are you planning to attend the Farm Day or Meet and Greet again this year? I missed it last year but will be in attendance this time.

Just curious but why do you guys run 30in spacing on your soybeans too instead of maybe 7.5 10 or 15 in?

That's simple. We aren't set up for narrow rows otherwise we would. We can't justify the money when we can pull the bean yields we do.
