Your videos taught me I need to develop a style made of a few simple components and techniques. The dowel hinges and plywood. Hopefully I can transcend my amateur hacked together creations finally.

Very clever! And I like how you went back to showing how you cut out everything, before using the Cntrl C and V mallets. Also, I wouldn't get on it until I have plenty of screws in it. Cyanoacrylate and brad nails would not be enough to support my 6'3", 260 lb (190 cm, 118 kilos) carcass! And I am far more timid than you regarding heights, even on small step stools. Thanks, Dekay!

Love that it has armrests! Great build. I would maybe include stretchers under the treads to reduce the flex in each stair. Just a thought. Cheers from Canada.

I love that you give measurements for your designs as well. This is something I might actually make because, as a short person, it would be really handy to have a chair that can turn into a step ladder for reaching the top shelf of the cabinets in the kitchen!

@vladimir51ful No worries, it changes a bit between web browser and phone app. On the browser, it's the box below the video title and channel name where you can see how many views the video has and when it was published. You click anywhere on the box to expand it. On the mobile app, it's also below the video and title, but above the channel name. You have to look for the "more..." in line with the upload date and video views and tap on that specifically to see the full description. In there, there's a timestamp that is highlighted as a link for you to click/tap, and it'll start the video up at the right time to see the blueprint and hear him talk about it. Hope that helps!

Hi Dekay, Very nice job, as always nice and useful furniture. I want to ask you, if I use other material as MDF of 19 mm for instance. Do you think that this will handle a 80 kg person? Thank you.
@hollt693
@hollt693 2 жыл бұрын
MDF by itself isn't particularly strong, as it has no grain like natural wood. That said, there are simple ways to reinforce it. I built myself a platform bed a couple of years ago with a top made from a 4'x8' sheet of MDF with a wooden frame attached underneath with beams every 2'. That combination made the frame strong enough to to hold 500+ pounds.

This sparked memories of a step-stool my family had back in the day (might still exist, but not sure). Worked on a similar principle in that there was a set of two steps that used a wooden pole as an axis to rest inside the stool's negative space between the supports. Then, once the step-stool was needed, just pull the steps out and they'd rotate on the pole. There was also a hole cut into the top step/stool surface to serve as a handle (and later down the line, a fun way to play with the cat as a paw repeatedly peaked through the handle to try and smack the cat-toy we had interested our feline friend in). Otherwise, at 6:45, I am wondering that maybe one thing that could be sparking the fear is the lack of reinforcement for the underside of the stairs. I can see myself thinking that if I were to try stand on that, I'd be really worried that I'd accidentally snap the step in half with my weight. Going back to my old family stepstool, one thing I remember was that the steps themselves were mounted on top of other wood cutouts that were attached to the axis. I bring that up because of the way that the force of the climber would impact on the structure: the steps themselves would experience a compression force at the sides close to where the feet would be. As opposed to your design, where the nails/screws and glue combination would instead result in a tensile force when stepped on, as all the support is concentrated at the sides and there is no support directly below. I am wondering if the fear you were feeling is maybe worry about the steps failing. So that's why I brought up what I did. Don't get me wrong, I still really like this design. I am just trying to narrow down what might be causing you to feel fear. Maybe one idea could be: try reinforcing the two top steps with additional supports. In particular, try placing the supports for those steps directly underneath where you'd expect your feet to be on either side of each step. That way, climbing will instead create a compression force against the underside supports, and some tension will be taken off the screws in the sides. If the fear you were experiencing possibly came from a worry about the structural integrity of the stairs, that's one way I can think of to try remedy that.

Cool as always, I love your stuff especially the kinematic things. But please don‘t use the upper step!!! If the center of gravity of your body will be behind the pivot point, which is the edge of the leg to the ground, gravity will do its job.
