I know I’m six months behind the times Shelley, but I have only just discovered your channel and was intrigued with this challenge. It’s one of the most difficult I’ve come across. I took some silk and folded it and then took a photo and went from there watching your video from time to time. I really came unstuck and you make it look so easy. As you rightly say it is an exercise in observation and tonal value as well as water control. And just when I thought I was getting the hang of this wonderful medium! So thank you from a wet and dismal day in the UK.

Shelley, so pleased to have found this. I have to paint some satin fabric in a project I am attempting - can you explain what colours you use for neutral tones.

Thanks Janet. I think I explained in my video about the colors. It can vary with each painting or even area of a painting. I generally will neutralize any color though with it's compliment (opposite on the color wheel). Orange/Blue, Red/Green, Yellow/Purple.

Dear Shelly, I really enjoy your videos, it's so useful to actzally hear your every thought while you are working. Need to watch you live some day here from Germany...one question about blotting the brush: instead of loading the brush fully and taking out most of the paint again, would it also work to pick up just a tiny bit of paint with the tip? I am asking because I am kind of feeling that I waste aot of paint otherwise.. I know it sounds mean, butI like to work economically.

It really doesn’t waste a lot of paint, especially compared to other mediums like oil and acrylic. I’m not removing most of the paint, only some of the excess moisture. I’m controlling the consistency so that the paint I apply isn’t too runny and create unwanted blossoms. It’s the easiest way that I’ve found to control what’s in my brush before I apply. Sometimes you need to fill the brush to get the type of stroke you need. Only picking up a little on the tip would create a different type of mark. Try to focus on making confident art rather than saving paint. Make large enough puddles of paint too. Having to stop in the middle of a wash to mix more paint can cause your painting to suffer. I once heard another artist say ‘paint like you can afford it’ lol.

I’m not as fond of watercolour pencils. They tend to leave pencil marks on the paper where some of the pigment doesn’t dissolve. They are fine in my sketchbook but personally I don’t use them in my finished paintings. Other artists do and that’s fine. It’s just not my preference.

So interesting about Neutral Tint. Do you know Shelley why exactly it doesn’t move? Do you have a favorite brand? I’ve noticed Daniel Smith’s NT is very different from Holbein’s for instance. What is your favorite gray mix for painting (white) fabric? Love every vid you makes❣️🥰

Thanks for the wonderful explanation of soft and hard edges. The visual examples with the t-shirt are fantastic. If you are painting something that isn't white, do you wash the fabric area with a base color first and then follow the steps you shared?

I would probably do a light shading before doing the main wash, only because it might be very difficult to find your pencil lines after applying an overall wash of color, especially with dark-colored fabric. This makes it much easier to identify where the areas for lifting color might be needed too. Those lights need to be preserved from the start.

I was going to skip this tutorial, thinking I would find it boring, but I did watch it and it is one of the most interesting tutorials I have ever seen! I'm from NL and am painting an iceberg. This tutorial is invaluable for my painting. I'm still learning but soft edges can be difficult. Thank you so much. Can I ask what size is this painting? Also, would you consider doing your drawing with a light paint the same color instead of pencil so there wouldn't be any lines? Would that work better than pencil?

Thanks so much Shari. The painting area is 8x10". A watercolour pencil can dissolve mostly but not entirely in my experience. A study like I did here isn't something to frame so it's a good opportunity to experiment and see what works and possibly even discover a better way.

Thanks Louise. That is entirely optional. You can click it off. You are simply using the photo to paint. You won't be using it for anything else. I usually give a 'shout out' to the photographer when I use their photo for my demo for example. It's a wee bit of promotion for them but not mandatory. Gives them credit.
