I think that line mainly frames the difference between James being an introvert and Betty being an extrovert. He hates crowds and probably doesn't have many friends at school whereas Betty seems to be more of a popular girl, which could explain why James didn't like her friends (Inez, for example, who seems like someone who likes to gossip). I think they were the classic "introverted guy dates high school sweetheart" which is why there was so much "hide and seek" and kissing in the car. Even Augustine, the only other person who is associated with James, isn't someone from James and Betty's high school.

I love how in betty James says "I'm only 17, I don't know anything but I know I miss you" and in cardigan Betty said "when you are young they assume you know nothing". James tries to justify himself cheating on Betty by saying that he's young and doesn't know anything, but Betty sees right through this narrative. She believes that young people know more than they are believed to. She thinks that James knew better than to cheat on her, and she will not take his excuse of being too "young and dumb" to realize his mistake. There are so many lyrical parallels between these three songs and I could talk about it forever, but this one is my favorite.

Plus I think James did mean what he said because you can tell by the lyrics in his song that he is very immature, I believe that he truly loves betty but he made a horrible decision. Betty's song is from years later when she's looking back at this thing, so it's understandable that at that point when she's much older that she'd realize these things, which means even james probably realized his immaturity when they grew older. in the future, that's when she thinks about how everyone assumes you know nothing when u are young, and she compares it to herself from back then by saying that she knew everything, and that was unfair because she knew and james didnt, that was hurtful but she had to accept that not all ppl mature at the same time.

I think "august" is from the perspective of the girl James slept with - Augustine... - not Inez... I think that song is her perspective because some of the lyrics "Because you were never mine" signals that James was Betty's and even though James cheated on Betty with Augustine, he was never truly hers. "So much for summer love" Is showing that this is roughly the same time period as the song Betty was set in, as it was summer then. "Remember when I pulled up and said, "Get in the car,"" is almost the same line as in Betty where the line is "She said "James, get in, let's drive"" showing that there is another relation between Augustine and James. Anyways, great job with this video!!! I agree it is amazing to see how all the songs on folklore connect and intertwine.

Actually 'the one' in cardigan refers to Betty herself. He chased two girl-- Augustine and Betty and he lost the one (betty). Because technically he never lost Augustine, he left her. He lost Betty. In August, Augustine says 'summer love' referring to james and her. Whereas in betty, james refers to her as 'just a summer thing', meaning she never really meant much to him. James was really in love with Betty, but only realized he lost the love of his life when it was too late. Augustine was in love with james but he never loved her. Betty was very hurt by james and tried to understand why he'd do this, but she never understood. But what she did know was that james would eventually come to her because she knew he was being immature and did love her, but even still it was hard for her to take him back.

So I have theories and a question anyone can feel free to answer now that evermore is out. Since Taylor called her Augustine, I'll refer to the girl from "august" as that. I feel like Augustine's story is the one that breaks my heart the most. Taylor mentioned in the long pond sessions that Betty and James eventually got back together when they're adults, and I assume on evermore that "willow" is from Betty's POV cause the video is a direct continuation of cardigan. So Betty and James got their happy ending, but what happened to Augustine? She was a girl who was in love with a guy that didn't care about her, that just used her for a summer fling. The song "august" always makes me incredibly sad cause of this, and that's a testament to Taylor's songwriting; she makes these characters feel like real people. I forget that it's Taylor Swift singing, I'm imagining the three characters she created. Basically I'm just wondering, could there possibly be a song from evermore that is from Augustine's POV? An update on where her life went? We don't really need to hear from James, cause he's back with Betty and it's all good there. I have 2 theories. 1. 'Betty' is from James to Betty when they were young. James has an affair, and explains he is only 17, I don't know anything 'Cardigan' is Betty when she is older still missing a love. Even though they were young, she knew. 2. 'Betty' is from James to Betty when they were young. He said 'I was walking home on broken cobblestones, Just thinking of you, When she pulled up, Like a figment of my worst intentions, She said, "James, get in, let's drive"" Then in 'Cardigan' cobble stones is mentioned, so maybe 'Cardigan' is the point of view from the girl James had the affair with only when shes older. James also says "I'm only 17, I don't know anything" but the girl singing Cardigan says "When you are young, they assume you know nothing and 'Cause I knew everything when I was young". 'August' is Betty's point of view after James had the fling. I think Betty and James never end up being together, life just worked out that way. 'The One' is written from Betty's point of view when their older. About how they should have ended up together but it never worked out that way.

They actually ended up together cuz it was confirmed by taylor herself. August is from the point of view of the girl he had the fling with-- her name is Augasta/Augustine. Because the lyrics explain that the whole thing was one sided, and james and betty were not one sided lovers so there's no way that song is from betty. However, James never loved Augustine, she was just a fragment of his immature mistakes. Cardigan is from the point of view of someone many years later looking back at something. It's betty bcuz the lyrics mention that he'd eventually realize he loves her and will come back to her, which is exactly what happens in the song Betty. So yeah

Here's what i got from the story. Betty and James was a high school couple. But then James cheated with the other girl during his relationship with Betty (Betty knew this news from Inez who was probably a gossip girl in class). He felt sorry and wanted to go back to Betty. And during summer, James dated Augustine. Augustine thought it was a summer love, but James just thought of it as a summer thing. Sorry if there any mistake.
