Links to the external gear rings you used on your lens?

What do you think of the type that rotate around one rod? I think neewer make one like this. It seems a simpler design and simpler setup. I don’t think it has stops though.
@Sunpixelvideo7 жыл бұрын
More than anything, is worry about the clamping force you'd get. I'd hate to fight it from coming off the teeth. They might work fine, but I've definitely had a couple duds from Neewer. If you wanna just try one out, just order from somewhere that won't give you a hard time shipping it back.

I'm afraid the sound that the hard stop make when colliding would be picked up by the microphone.

It depends on where the microphone is.

do you absolutely need a cage to put on the follow focus?
@Sunpixelvideo6 жыл бұрын
No. Most follow focuses need rails to mount to, but not a cage.

A mechanical follow focus system for $300? I'd rather buy the new Nucleus Nano for $230, which is wireless.
@Sunpixelvideo6 жыл бұрын
It only cost me $150, so half that. I personally like having my hand directly in control of the lens. There are no batteries to run out. There are no programming bugs or software updates to worry about. That follow focus your mentioning is not available for sale yet, so can't say how well it works. Is there lag? Does it make noise? Servo motors (my guess on motor selection based on the price point) tend to make some kind of noise. If you shoot as a first camera operator only, you'd then be putting it on the camera rig and it would effectively be the same thing as a manual system, right? There are manual follow focuses for over a thousand dollars though and I'd agree that it's silly to spend a ton of money if you can get something just as good for cheaper.

If I remember correctly, every time you turn the Nucleus Nano on, it does a calibration for a full minute. That seems troublesome for a run & gun person who moves from location to location and want to save battery, or someone who wants to use different lenses.

@@stanleystevens6278 Run & Gun? Use AF...it's kind of a no brainer nowadays with all the mirrorless cameras. Even Panasonic is good at AF nowadays. Although I agree that AF will never replace manual for narrative and documentary work. But if you're on a tight budget, the Nucleus Nano is a great option. Calibration is very important to achieve correct focus...my experience has been different though. Both the M and Nano take about 20-30 seconds depending on the lens (and focus throw).

I keep hearing people talk about settling for lower quality brands as a back up or some BS like that and it's just not good advice. Don't buy what you have the budget for, save your money until you have enough money for that budget and buy the best. As for the Newer, I'm using this one and as long as you are fine with taking it apart and adjusting small items on this (for example I swapped out some screws and built a riser for the follow focus system), then this is a great follow focus to get. If you are more inclined to brand, then the Fotga is great. Both are made of the same materials and though the latter might be better in a lot of respects, it will never compromise the quality of footage that comes out of your Canon, or Sony, or Lumix, etc.

So your advice is save and buy the best... But you own neewer equipment, cheapest available. ;)
@brentthomasaustin6 жыл бұрын
@@jimb1453 Buy the best, and in this case, follow focus systems as far as manual turn focus' are pretty much all the same.

They both seem to love those cheap blue looking fixtures on their gear :/
@Sunpixelvideo6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it kind of is what it is. They're just normal threaded screws. I thought about swapping them out, but once I used it for a while, I kinda quit noticing.
