Today we talk about 3 critical video settings that you will find on almost every camera.
This video is an excerpt from my G85 Video Guide: dslr-video-shoo...
Overview of the Settings:
Shutter Speed
Controls how LONG light hits the sensor each second. Also controls motion blur effects.
Saving Private Ryan is a great example of how a fast shutter speed can be used for tension.
The Bourne movies are a great example of slow shutter speeds (when Jason is dreaming/remembering his past).
180 Degree rule explanation.
Aperture
Controls how MUCH light hits the sensor. Also controls depth of field or how much of the shot is in focus.
ISO
Controls the sensitivity (brightness) of sensor. Noise can be introduced at high ISO levels so try to avoid those.
How I Use These Settings:
1) Set shutter speed for desired look (180 rule is applied when I shoot most of the time)
2) Set aperture for desired depth of field.
3) Use ISO to make final exposure changes.

Yeah yeah cool man. I just watched A Kite (1998) on hanime last night HIGHLY recommended. It's R18+ I presume. Gonna get back to drawing now but shoulder is hurting! How do you get your drawings looking like a 90's anime??? I mean the colours are different right, I think it was put to film which is what caused the colours to look like that. Woah your hands videos got 2.7 mill views woah I'm gonna watch that.

Side note: If you're shooting on a green screen, you'll want to use a higher shutter speed, to eliminate some of the motion blur. Often 1/80th will suffice.
@swissguy5008
@swissguy5008 7 жыл бұрын
Came here to ask just that. I recently did some green screen work with my a7sii at 24fps and 1/80. Still had a bit of trouble with the key, as my subject was energetic with lots of hand movements. Was shooting slog3 internally. I’m wondering for my next shoot if I would benefit more from increasing shutter speed even more. Or, I just purchased an Atomos Ninja Inferno, so less compression might do the trick.

Just came across this. I've heard people shooting as high as 1/320 to get a very clean key. It's trial and error depending on the camera and setup.

Excellent video man. It’s crazy how hard it’s been to find this exact info for shooting video. Great job explaining and thanks for this. I keep hearing and learning about these three important camera fundamental settings (shutter speed, aperture, iso), and everything would seem clear whenever I would watch an explanation. But then 10 minutes later, I would be like, now what does aperture do again ? This explanation really helped simplify and clarify the distinctions on which each of these settings does and how to use and adjust each in different scenarios. Much of photography will be overcoming challenges of too much light, not enough light, too much depth or not enough depth of field, so to logically think it through which settings to prioritize and then adjust for special circumstances is really important and helpful.

I like how you bring out the most basic characteristics that You can influence the quality of a good photo, how bright or dark it will turn out. This may seem very easy to understand, yet it can take some time to master. There isn’t any objective variable that tells You when the exposure is “right”. You have to find for Yourself if a photograph looks too bright or dark. Your Video is quite the guide.

I have just watched this excellent tutorial. It is a well explained tutorial. My only 2 cents worth comment : 1. After fixing shutter speed and aperture in manual mode, choose Auto ISO, so the camera will automatically adjust the ISO to keep the exposure correct except when there's too much light even after adjusting the f-stop to the highest number when you need a neutral density (ND) filter, or extra light source when it is too dark even after dialling up the highest aperture. The other point perhaps worth mentioning is that if you are using a zoom lens with variable f-stop and you wish to maintain the same depth of field in your video, then choose the smallest aperture (highest number) in your settings as per your lens and you will have consistent depth of field through out the shoot, even at maximum zoom.
