What happened when the Lord provided for the Three Witnesses to view the plates? Should we revere Egbert Grandin for assisting in printing the Book of Mormon or Martin Harris?
Hank Smith and John Bytheway continue to discuss the exorbitant cost of printing the Book of Mormon, how the early Restorationists learn about church governance, and the concept of hell. Things get hot as we conclude our episode with Dr. Scott Woodward and Doctrine and Covenants 18-19.Dr. Scott Woodward is the managing director at www.doctrineandcovenantscentral.org . Stop by and see all the great content for your Come, Follow Me studies.

I am just blown away by what was shared in this podcast. I keep thinking: how have I been in the church for over 40 years and not realized this?! It's wonderful! Thank you! I love Dr. Woodward's image of Christ tenderly speaking to Martin. When a section starts with "I am Alpha and Omega" I think of His voice being angry and booming. When I read Section 3, I initially had the same thought but realized that the Lord was lovingly assuaging Joseph's fears. I pictured the Lord's hand on Joseph's shoulder telling him that all was not lost. Section 9 is just as tender. I've got to remember that the Lord's voice is not in the earthquake. It is loving, with His arms wrapped around us, telling us that He has the power to understand what we are experiencing and that He can help us.

Also, thank you, for Dr. Woodward's words about those who leave the Church after studying Church history. They should study DEEPER!!. I know of one sister and her family who left because of learning of the Sear Stone. She is constantly on my mind as I study Church History.

One of the best discussions so far! I felt the Holy Ghost very powerfully by the truths discussed in this podcast. The family discussion that followed in our home was amazing because of what we learned here first. I very much appreciate all the work done for these and Dr. Woodward's willingness to share his testimony and knowledge. My kids don't think I cry so I'm glad I listened to this in my office! This discussion has helped so much! To me it was about changing my attitude. I have had to make some big changes in my life that I didn’t want to make. This lecture put making those changes in perspective. I loved learning that the my Savior isn’t ‘angry’ in a mortal way but in a parenting way. Don’t we as mortal parents do the same with our children to protect them? Thank you for reminding me of this perspective!

This second part was so excellent and revealing. Of personal awareness for Martin Harris and what the Lord would do to help him in his contribution. It really makes me want to focus more on where the end goal is for me. And what the Lord wants all of us to try to obtain because I his sacrifice.

Thank you so much! I loved the part where you discussed how the Lord used the weak things of the earth (Martin and Joseph being two of them) and made them strong (Joseph as the first prophet of Christ’s restored church and Martin’s tremendous sacrifice to finance the publishing of The Book of Mormon). I don’t think it was a backhanded complement when the Savior told Joseph this. I think it was simply a fact that they both knew. What a beautiful message of redemption!

Seems to me like EB Grandin made a 50% return on the deal. According to your figures, he made $1000 profit on $3000 revenues. So his cost/investment was $2000. $1000 profit on $2000 investment is 50% return right?

I'm not sure some of the way repentance and forgiveness, sin and righteousness is being presented (in an eternal sense) as productive as it could be. Honestly I may be misunderstanding the presenters position. It often feels like we are being given stubborn mules manual to success. Carrot in front with the whip behind. This unfortunately setup a transactional relationship with heaven and can lead to a kind of toxic perfectionism and or scrupulosity. When we have a perfectionist mindset we have a powerless Christ. This Jesus cannot do what he promised as His mercy is truly conditional beyond even mortal limits. How could we as must earn his grace through active pursuit or near perceptual achievement of often irrational perfectionist standards. Maybe the misunderstanding happens with this mistranslation. Fun differences in translation: Matthew 5:48 Greek : " “Ἔσεσθε” οὖν ὑμεῖς “τέλειοι” ὡς ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ οὐράνιος τέλειός ἐστιν. KJV 48.Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. NASB 48Therefore you shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Literal Verse: You will certainly be you yourselves complete as the Father of yours, the sky one, is complete. I think it's important to remember we are born flawed human beings, living in a flawed world, with imperfect solutions to imperfect situations with which we are granted imperfect outcomes. Ultimately, it takes imperfections to allow us to Learn and Grow. Otherwise, why even have opposition in all things… or in other words, yin and yang, dark and light, strength and weakness Etc? Maybe imperfect is the perfect state on this world. Thought experiment: A $100 bill dropped on the ground, ripped, ran over, randomly exchanged or used and abused, and soiled. Maybe this $100 bill was used to buy drugs, then ripped and wrinkled in its travels and eventually discarded. What is its value now? Whin in our travels we find this pitiful looking 100 dollar bill and take it to any… any Bank or business... will it still be worth its stated value? Yes! There is no question as it does not lose its value and nor do we. We are the hundred-dollar bill. Our lives can have meaning, purpose and value despite of our imperfection. Maybe imperfection actually makes us beautiful. Go live, love, laugh, and be more free by letting go of the evils of perfection. Wabi- sabi In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi (侘寂) is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete". I think we need to remember that Jesus said Matt 11:30 "For my yoke is easy and my burden is light"

Maybe I missed it in the “Saints” book or other places, but who set the number as 5,000 copies? Why couldn’t they start with 1,000 copies of the book?
@lynettemckenzie9044
@lynettemckenzie9044 3 жыл бұрын
In Revelations in Context, in the chapter called “The Contributions of Martin Harris”, it mentions the 5,000 but doesn’t talk about the discussion that led to the determined number. Based on Joseph Smith’s optimism about the number of copies he later wanted published of the Book of Commandments (twice the number they actually were able to print), I have always assumed the same applies here. Interesting question!
