I've been in VN one year now, sad to say only learned a few words. I'm an engineer, with zero natural ability for languages. But somehow your style is so inspiring, I want to try!

I think the most important thing when you learn a language is inspiration/ motivation. As long as you have it, doesn't matter if the language is difficult or not, you're gonna achieve your goal : )

@@SlowVietnamese You're right Thuy! Unless I missed it, would you consider making a beginner's video on the basics of tones? How to speak them so people understand, how to read them? Thanks ☺️
@SlowVietnamese3 жыл бұрын
@@gregreed2713 I have been thinking about making pronunciation videos, but there are many Vietnamese pronunciation videos already. So I think you can find them from TVO - Tieng Viet Oi youtube channel if you're learning northern, Vietnamese with Annie, SVFF if you're learning southern dialect : )

i hope you can find your inspiration. go through videos and articles and anything that has to do with vietnamese, and look for what makes you the most happy or the most interested. thats how i found my love for japanese and chinese as well. even if its just the way its written or the way it sounds or the way it differenciates to other languages. hope this makes sense :)

I am so happy I found your slow Vietnamese channel and videos (specifically the slow talking). Of the many things I struggle with in learning Vietnamese, listening/hearing is the biggest challenge. So many words sound similar, and if I hear the wrong tone in a word, it sends me in a completely different direction for the word.
@Antares27 ай бұрын
I heard you mentioned vietnamese being a tonal language. When I started learning chinese, I was a bit worried about the tones. Only after studying for a while did I realize that my native language, norwegian, is also a partly tonal language. There are plenty of words that are only differentiated in meaning from the tone (not to mention how tone can change a statement into a question and such). So, I am not that worried about tones as much anymore. I find the best way to learn is to simply immerse yourself in the language and get as much input as possible and the tones will come automatically over time. I have been considering learning vietnamese, as I really like how it sounds. It's a fascinating language for me.

Getting people to slow down in Vietnam is indeed sometimes difficult! Younger people usually will, but older people will often just say it louder. :-) Sometimes they surprise you though. There was an old lady selling chè on my street and she was surprisingly aware of what confused me. For example she gave me a price the first time and it sounded like "bamlăm". I looked blankly and she said "hà, ba mươi lăm" and smiled. Lots of people would have said it louder, or just tried English. (Now, whether I should have paid ba mươi lăm for that chè or not is another issue...🤔)

Hello. I am learning the southern dialect pronunciation from Vietnamese with Annie. I was wondering if it would still be beneficial to watch Vietnamese videos that are in the northern dialect or should I only watch videos with the the southern dialect to avoid confusion?
@SlowVietnamese2 жыл бұрын
if you're an absolute beginner, I suggest to stick with only southern dialect.

I think there's to much emphasis on tone. It's not true. Most important is: 1) Circumstance or situation 2) Intention 3) Implied meaning "And last but not least" 4) Expression or tone. You ever try to explain something to someone and as a last resort say "You know what I mean?" Vietnamese language has a lot of homophones. Use them wisely.

người nói tiếng anh khó học tiếng việt như thế nào? tôi phải làm gì nếu tôi gặp khó khăn trong việc học tiếng việt?
@SlowVietnamese2 жыл бұрын
quan trọng nhất là phát âm, và từ vựng. Phát âm phải tốt, nếu phát âm không tốt thì bạn phải luyện tập đến khi nó đủ tốt. Vì nếu phát âm sai thì người Việt sẽ không hiểu, và mọi người sẽ confused. Tiếp theo là luyện tập nghe và từ vựng
