Nice solution. Good thinking. I wonder if there's air movement blowing the flames and creating a higher pressure area where they are. The fan above then corrects the area to the desired low pressure conducive to vapor flames. If so, a pane of glass might also help alleviate the issue, but may not be the look you are going for...
