I am so glad I have found this channel. I am 65 and never wild camped or walked in wild places. What’s been stopping me? The fear of getting lost? I am determined to do it before it’s to late. Been searching KZbin to learn how to navigate. Still uncertain. Your videos, your teaching style, your clarity and the delivery in practical settings are excellent. Being able to see it being done, suits my learning style. I feel more certain of successful navigation after watching this series. You have made a subject that my dyslexia struggles with, seem possible. My first walk will hopefully happen spring 2021. Thank you Subscribed don’t want to miss the next one🔥

@@BeyondTheTrail hi Thank you. I have visited your website. Would navigation training be done during the day walk experience. I have now come across discussions regarding OS v Harvey maps. Have you any experience of this what are your thoughts Thanks

@@kennethcarter5720 hi, hope you're doing well. The website doesn't list the nav training yet, but will do soon. I will plan a nav day based on your current level of knowledge and pick a suitable area to get the most out of it. Email me at paul@beyondthetrail.uk and we can plan for this in the near future 👍 Harvey's vs OS is very much about visual preference and the level of detail you need for the walking activity that you're doing. We can definitely talk through that. Speak soon.

@@BeyondTheTrail no worries! il look forward to watching. your videos have really helped me out. before the lock down i had joined a military veterans walking group on Dartmoor, the guy who organises these walks is an ex special forces para (officer) and he was helping me to relearn some of the NAV i had learned 20 years ago in the army. particularly the 5 D'S which is why i was so pleased to find your first video! he advised me to buy lyle brothertons "ultimate navigation manual" and some other moorland NAV related books. reading the books have been great but finding your videos was refreshing as it felt a lot like a lesson. so thanks again BYT you have been a great help to me.

@@eldubs that is enormously encouraging, thank you. I'm hoping to simplify episode two a little and make a couple of the points clearer, once I can get back to the mountains (I'm just a little too far to justify travel at the moment). 2 questions. In zero visability you wouldn't be able to see that large boulder on leg 1. And what if u missed the lake, again if the weather, was bad and u couldn't see it. Wouldn't it be better to "aim off" on ur bearing to the lake as it's a small target?
@BeyondTheTrail4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob. Good point about visibility and that brings in a whole load of other techniques not covered in this video. I plan to cover that in the future, and techniques include sending someone ahead on a bearing and double checking against each other - different again if you're on your own! In relation to actually finding the lake, which is pretty hard to spot in poor vis, that needs a strategy around catching features and using short legs with clear features. Have you often been caught out in bad vis? Always entertaining!
@robmckinley54754 жыл бұрын
@@BeyondTheTrail I very often go out on my own. Broken ground Nav' can be very challenging especially in zero viz' and travelling solo. If I was aiming for a small feature in bad weather such as a lake or sheep pen etc I'd always aim off one side (terrain allowing) so then I'd know which side I'd ended up at. Are you based in Snowdonia? I go there a lot. I've climbed with Rusty from Beddgellert a few times on courses.
@BeyondTheTrail4 жыл бұрын
@@robmckinley5475 it's a good technique to aim off to one side and better if you can identify a catching feature. Yes, really grateful to call this home. I live on the coast but the Ogwen Valley is my favourite spot for mountain days, trad and snowboarding!

Brilliant. 1. Can you please spell the area you filmed in 2. What system do you use to take notes when planning your 5Ds? I have a terrible memory but struggle to keep pens and paper and map organised especially the rain. Cheers.
@BeyondTheTrail2 жыл бұрын
Hi Imran, thanks for your questions. It is a superb valley called Cwm Tryfan in the Ogwen Valley, Snowdonia. I don't write down my 5 Ds. If I have to use this system then I'm likely to be doing multiple short legs of a journey, maybe up to 400m or so. This is short enough not to have to write details down. Then set up for the next leg/target. Practice makes it feel natural and less need to rely on notes. I hope this helps. Are you looking for any training?
