Just getting into scrambling with a mate. Trying to figure out what grade we're at and how to get better. I think we're at about grade 1, any tips on how to get better?
@BeyondTheTrail23 күн бұрын
Hi. I'd say it's not a case of getting better, it's more a matter of gaining experience and confidence moving on steeper terrain. Much of scrambling well and safely is about good judgement, which comes with time on various routes. Through repetition you'll learn good body positioning, foot and hand placement and how to read a route. You can also book onto a scrambling course to learn some of these elements then get out and practice. Hope this helps.

Hi Paul I was wondering why do you carry the extra weight of a rope ! if it just you climbing! Who will be holding the other end?
@BeyondTheTrail25 күн бұрын
Hi Steve. It's an insurance policy 😁 I sometimes prefer to carry a rope and some gear on a new route in the event that I need to back off and abseil. Also, never know if it might be handy to help someone else in difficulty. Not necessary, but a 'nice to have'.

Can you say what type of gear you had on your feet? I am an American, but I have a son studying over in Ireland. He hikes a lot and I am a little worried he will contemplate going over to Wales to hike this, probably not in Winter, but still. I have watched many of your videos and wonder at how you have developed a mind that trusts your feet and hands in situations with a great deal of exposure. I look forward to your future videos.

Hi. Thanks for letting me know you've enjoyed the videos and I hope I can get some more out this year. On scrambling routes like this, in anything other than winter conditions, I wear 'approach shoes' which are sturdy but have soft, sticky soles. I wear La Sportiva Boulder X or Scarpa Crux. You can also wear a light walking boot but they can be a little too flexible in the sole. In the Winter I wear a B2 graded boot like the La Sportiva Trango Tower. Happy to advise any time. Cheers.

So great to see the horseshoe in superb conditions which magnifies the scale of the range. Easy to see why Tenzing, when accompanying Hilary and Charles Evans on a similar day asked where the camps were going to be on the traverse. Also it is a refreshing change to see a capable and knowledgeable mountaineer who fully appreciates the requirements both in capabilities as well as gear for these conditions. Lastly, it is great to hear the correct pronunciations of Crib Goch, Crib yr Ddysgl, Garnedd Ugain and Yr Wyddfa . Fideo ardderchog

Maybe I am just a clueless American, but from 5:18 on it appears as if you have switched from scrambling (class 4) to actual climbing (grade 5)? Tell me why I am wrong.
@BeyondTheTrail3 ай бұрын
The biggest question in climbing grading. Again, I'm not sure about the US system but grade 3 scrambling often crosses over into the lower graded climbing grades of Moderate, Difficult and possibly Very Difficult. The difference is often whether the difficulties are brief or extended. The technical moves might be similar and a rope could certainly be used on a grade 3 scramble, but the climbing sections are likely to be over quite quickly with simple scrambling in between. Does this help? How does this translate to the US system?

Great, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'll watch it back to check on the rope over the edge. If you mean as I pull out onto the top slab, it's onto easy ground with a fairly rounded edge on the transition, so not so bad. was on it today some seriously big loose flakes on the pitch after you leave the ledge, would definitely avoid using these at all costs, you can actually see the difference in colour where one has detached that is actually tere in your video which is an awesome watch fella. Would definitely take a rope and bit of gear unless competent and experienced on this kind of terrain, give you that little room for margin of error should you need it or go off route, that said the route finding on this scramble is obvious enough!
@BeyondTheTrail7 ай бұрын
Hi. You're right about the loose sections and i know about the circumstances of that piece coming off, with a really serious outcome. I would advise avoiding placing great between any of those blocks/flakes and certainly not placing full weight on them. However, there are holds on the right, which assist. Glad you enjoyed it 👍

100% should have mentioned that but like you say there are plenty of of places to place protection and some natural features that can be utilised, also aware of the tragedy that unfolded just felt like its only a matter of time before it happens there again, appreciate you have got to expect a lot more loose rocks, flakes etc when scrambling nature of the terrain just thought I would mention it for those thinking of heading that way, definitely well worth a visit, fantastic scramble from start to finish!
