Neil Diamond attended Abraham Lincoln High School, the school from which he received his high school diploma; he was a member of the fencing team. He later attended New York University on a fencing scholarship, specialising in sabre, and was a member of the 1960 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) men's championship team; into his adult life he maintained his swordsmanship skills and continued to warm up with fencing exercises before his concerts.

My housemates and I and a few others drove up from London to see Neil Diamond at Woburn Abbey. We were ecstatic about seeing him for the first time, I think each of us owned a copy of Hot August Night (still have it - it's well played). The weather was gloriously warm and I'll never forget the thrill of seeing Neil come onto the stage. I think I was on a high for months afterward, one of the most memorable concerts for me ever.

I was 16 years old when I journeyed from London to Woburn Abbey with a best mate on special trains from Euston Stn and my first ever gig.. Grew up in a household with music always playing and Neil Diamond was played a lot! I have since seen them all from Jackson to Bowie, Springsteen, Wonder, McCartney, Stones, Prince, Madonna, Elton John, Oasis and so many more from more recent years. Diamond in his pomp was incredible, voice, presence and a charisma few could match..If I could relive one concert from all that I’ve seen it would probably be this one. That’s how great Neil Diamond was.

Oh, how I wish someone had some clips from ND's performance from his 1977 performance at Kemper Arena in Kansas City. A number of us young musicians from Chanute, Kansas, went to the show and it took us several days to come back down to earth after that performance ...it was so great! The intro was similar to the above Woburn Abbey intro ...an absolutely shattering version of Dance of the Sabres instrumental bringing Neil onstage immediately followed by Soolaimon. It was the most exciting intro (in fact, the most exciting show) I've ever seen and the crowd went wild with enthusiasm! ND was in his heyday back then and his appearance at Kemper Arena had been the most anticipated show in KC ever by any performer at the time ...even Elvis was not in so much demand as ND! Once again, 1977 Kemper Arena, Kansas City, Missouri. Does anyone have a clip ...even if only audio? I want so much to re-live that time.

I was at this wonderful concert. From memory the set list was similar to the " Love at the Greek " concert. I had to work in the morning. I was picked up at lunch time in London and my friend drove me to Woburn Abbey. On the way home my friend almost ran out of petrol and we had to find an all night garage where we had difficulty getting the machine to accept one pound notes. This was the first of many N D concerts. Really happy memories of the day. I sat not far from the then England cricket captain, Tony Greig. Many years later I wrote a song inspired by Neil's writing. Thanks for posting this. One of my best all time memories is attending this concert back in 1977 with my father. There was no "online" ticket booking back then, and I remember being on the phone for hours trying to get through to book tickets as soon as the phone lines opened. I fortunate enough to get through and get a couple of tickets. We drove down from Warrington the morning of the concert and joined the mass of people waiting to take our seats on an unusually hot & sunny afternoon. The whole concert was incredible, with several encores that left the crowd wanting more.

A night to remember indeed Reg. There was a little bit more to our journey there that day. Five of us including my late Mother flew over that morning from Belfast, N.Ireland. It was in the days of going to the airport and putting your name on a chalkboard in the hope of getting a seat (standby) which we did on the first flight out that morning. The flight attendant came round like a bus conductor and took our fare and reeled off our tickets from the machine hanging round her neck. Taxi from Heathrow to Woburn and time for a pint before joining the queue that hot afternoon. Most were listening to the Wimbledon men's singles final between Borg and Connors (Borg won) on their little transistor radios. Then came the stampede to get the best seats which thank goodness we had tickets for, I think ours cost us £7 if memory serves me right. Neil was awesome that night though one of my most vivid memories were the big hot air balloons that came out of the darkness with all hanging out of the baskets looking down at us as they flew over and disappeared back into the dark. Another were the banks of speakers either side of the stage, think the whole of Oxfordshire must have heard the show that night. Ha. The band came onstage from the right and off course all eyes were there until a glint of blue caught our eyes from the left hand side and Neil was there. All to soon the night was over and then we had to make our way back to Heathrow, spend the rest of the night talking about Neil's fantastic performance before flying home Sunday morning. Thought it would be the only time I would get to see Neil but have seen him 10 more times. Woburn 1977 will always be the BEST.

What has puzzled me for years and still continues to do so is WHY there appears to be no live footage from the Hot August Night concerts at the Greek Theater. Did no one think to take a movie/video camera along for the events?? Are there even any 'still' shots from HAN?

The reason there is no live footage is because young Neil Diamond, being the insecure man he was then, feared that his shows would not do quite so well. How wrong he was!
