Heard this song on the radio a couple of times back in 1971, and I was hooked. I listened intently for the name of the singer and the song, and then headed out to my nearest music store. On arrival at the store, I discovered that this, to me then, unknown singer, had two albums (LPs). One was 'Sweet Caroline' and the other was 'Stones'. I then did something that I had never done before... I purchased not one, but both albums, my purchase being made solely on having heard only one song from this singer. This song so moved me..._ _"... I got an emptiness deep inside and I've tried but it won't let me go..."_ _The pain, the tortured cries. This was even more evident in 'I Am... I Said (Reprise)'. Neil's voice, his sincerity and pain, tugged at my heartstrings; he touched my soul. I felt his loss, his pain, for I too, was experiencing those emotions (The story's the same one). Saw 'The Jazz Singer' in South Africa when l was 18 yrs old and l was smitten by this beautiful man❤ Watching interviews with his smooth and sexy voice makes me feel like my soul knows him. Wonderful discovery. It's a worthwhile journey finding his music. They just came out with a Broadway show called "A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Story " I'm a straight confident man but I know I couldn't sit through the show without an entire bedsheet to cry into LOL! Love love love him so much. I'm 53 and grew up in the 70's listening to him and to this day he's still on my top favorite music list to play. His voice gives me the chills. So so sad to learn he has Parkinson's disease. Watched an interview and it had me in tears. Such a sweet sweet handsome talented man. 🩷 God bless him. I used to dream of Neil Diamond being my love. Great interview. What a lovely human being producing some of the most memorable songs in my life’s journey. I remember when I was living in the US for a few years walking around a CVS one morning and Sweet Caroline came on in the background music and the whole store erupted into song !! It was magical. Thank you Neil. I never missed his concerts when he came to the UK and was privileged to be there at what turned out to be his last one ever although we did not know it at the time. I send him love.

Having had the privilege of seeing the new musical "A Beautiful Noise" on Broadway last week, I'm now realizing that some of the elements seem to be taken from this interview. The musical's backdrop is an elderly Neil speaking to a therapist, who asks him many of the same questions that Barbara did in this interview. Wonderful to watch, thank you for posting it.

A great musician and singer/songwriter. Such a humble man. Neil Diamond and John Denver were always my favorites. I remember as a teen putting his music in the record player and cranking it up in the evenings as my mom and I would listen to him while we fixed the evening dinner. Dad would come in from work and just look at us and let us know he could hear the music clear into the garage as he got out of the car. Lol! I asked him once if he enjoyed what he heard. He said yes! By then the album was on the last song and dinner was on the table. Some nights we ate on trays and watched TV. But always Neil’s music made life seem better, even sweeter. I have a GG-Grandmother Caroline, and my GG-Grandfather loved her so much because she was the sweetest woman he had ever met. And everyone called her Sweet Caroline. I sing that song and think of them long ago. Thanks Neil! God bless you wherever you are right now. You made the world a more beautiful place to live in.

As a songwriter, multi-instrumental musician, and classically trained singer, I totally get what Neil meant about wanting _others_ to perform his songs. I agonize over getting my lyrics just right, and the best way to serve the _songs_ would be to match them with singers whose voices are just right _for_ them. Side Note: When I was growing up, "The Jazz Singer" soundtrack album was a regular fixture in my house, and as a result, Neil Diamond is one of my biggest influences as a songwriter...particularly as a lyricist. It's a shame there aren't more like him in _today's_ music market.

Infinite thanks for your work. Your songs are ethereal, deep and at the same time so real, so full of feelings. I listen to your songs because they make me feel more human in this current, unreal and almost technologically precise world. Sometimes I cry when I listen the song I am I said, and let the tears distort the vision of the space around me, and I can really travel inside my heart and soul, it's an intense energy for just a fraction of seconds.. .. then I fly back to reality, and I think that I am lucky to be able to experience these feelings ...and thank you, Niel Diamond, so much for that.

Im a fan since '71, when I was ten, and noticed I Am I Said on the radio. And the song not only held its own against songs like Riders on the Storm, Whats Going On, Youve Got A Friend, Wont Get Fooled Again, just an embarrassment of riches that were all out about the same tine, it spoke to me personally because I was a loner, a skinny frog of kid with the iq of a king, who didn't really fit anywhere. Im now a songwriter, with live material here on KZbin, just starting to get occasional gigs at the ripe old age of 62. Definitely doing it my way. And sometimes when I see how small my audience (and group of friends) is, I think to myself, "I am...I said , to no one there.

The fact that at the tender age of 10 that "I Am... I Said" had that impact on you speaks volumes of the person you truly are. I believe you to be, possibly as a consequence of your early life experiences, a sensitive person and a deep thinker. Film-flam is of no interest to you. “I Am… I Said” had the similar impact on me in 1971 and yes, like you, heard it on the radio. Here are my comments that I placed on our website: _This has to be my absolute favourite Neil Diamond song. Heard this song on the radio a couple of times back in 1971, and I was hooked. I listened intently for the name of the singer and the song, and then headed out to my nearest music store. On arrival at the store, I discovered that this, to me then, unknown singer, had two albums (LPs). One was 'Sweet Caroline' and the other was 'Stones'. I then did something that I had never done before... I purchased not one, but both albums, my purchase being made solely on having heard only one song from this singer. This song so moved me..._ *"... I got an emptiness deep inside and I've tried but it won't let me go..."* The pain, the tortured cries. This was even more evident in 'I Am... I Said (Reprise)'. Neil's voice, his sincerity and pain, tugged at my heartstrings; he touched my soul. I felt his loss, his pain, for I too, was experiencing those emotions (The story's the same one). I must be a fan. I play and own all his music on vinyl and CD. Also, 1 concert on VHS and DVD. then an episode of the 1965 TV show Mannix, Were Neil played himself. I have been to 4 concerts, since the 1980's.
