Wow... late 90's?! I personally don't hear that too often. From where I stood, being just old enough to dig Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, The Pixies, The Breeders, Radiohead, Rage Against The Machine, Dinosaur Jr., Nine Inch Nails, Beck, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. etc. in the early to mid 90's, when they hit (or in some cases starting getting more national attention after years of being underground bands) that to me it seemed like once Cobain left us and the Indie/Grunge scenes fizzled out or slipped back underground, the newer music (with a few exceptions) either didn't measure up to that initial explosion of Alternative rock becoming popular, (mostly thanks to Nirvana) or just seemed to be the slow death of that magic time and the major labels going back to that well one too many times and trying to squeeze out the last drops of gold. But that's just me. Not trying to tear down your tastes, good on you for digging your time and it's music, etc. But to me, popular rock music has never reached those heights again.
